Introduction
This is a fun and simple game. It's in the Sandbox - feel free to join in! It's a good place to practice making links to articles, and to start looking for interesting articles on Wikipedia.
How to Play
By way of example, a game might start off with: cat. Then, the next person might add cat, dog. And after a few more rounds, we might get cat, dog, pet, animal, forest, tree, ...
Simply, the game involves adding a single word to the list that is related to the previous one. Avoid repeating words, and keep the links tasteful! Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus Sebastian Junger would be followed by 1962, and Latin by ancient.
Try to update the word count each time you add a word. The official limit for the main game is 400 words.
Occasionally, it's good to have some branches that diverge the main game into several sections. The official limit for said branches is 80 words. Try not to make a branch when the main game is about to close down; that will only store your branch away in the archives. Please only branch when the word exists in the word list.
In spirit of the game, please only type one word consecutively. Then, another person can respond to your word, and the game continues!

Ultra Word Association
This is a fun derivative of word association that involves a bit more creativity. It is also a good way to start seeing how you make Tables on Wikipedia. And speaking of creativity, there are five eight Twelve?!! a lot of variations to the game!
How to Play
Simply add your word to the grid, either going sideways or downwards. One word at a time please!
- If you go sideways, your new word needs to associate with the word to the LEFT of it.
- If you go downwards, your word need to associate with the word ABOVE it.
- If there is a word ABOVE and to the LEFT of your word, it needs to be associated with BOTH of them.
- You can't add a word so that there's an empty gap either above it or to the left of it.
- You are not allowed red links.
By the time we can reach the final gridsquare, (bottom right), we will have a word associated with every single other word in the grid, that began as the top-left square.
Obviously, it is harder to fill in the in-between squares as you have to be creative to find the word that associates twice. Thus more satisfaction and praise goes to the guys who can get us closer to that elusive bottom-right square. If absolutely necessary, a previous word can be overwritten.

Brief Synopsis
(Below is a listing of the games, what number they're on, and their descriptions. Please update this list when you archive a game.)
Fixed - 10 - The entire left and top have pre-made words.
Radial - 9 - You start from the middle and associate to the corners.
Radial Ultra Cross - 5 - You start from a fixed word, and associate to a certain letter in certain places, then expand outward like radial.
Reverse Radial - 3 - Start from the outside and work your way into a center square.
Psychadelic - 9 - Miscellaneous ideas
Enigmatic - 3 - Start with four fixed words spaced equally on a 3x3 grid, and guess at the words that could go in the blank spaces.
Sliding doors - 1 - Associate simultaneously on two grids.
Cubic - 1 - Associate not only by row and column, but by height.
Skein - 1 - A goal-oriented ultra association.
How to start a new series
The Ultra Word Association has spawned a number of deviants. If you have an idea and are so bold you'd like to try to make it a series, use the following steps:
1. Use [1] to make your table, making or deleting new rows and columns, and changing the background color to suit your series.
2. Come up with a name for it. Five of the deviants have an adjective followed by "word association" or "ultra word association": Fixed, Radial, Psychedelic, Enigmatic, and Cubic; so following this trend might be a good idea.
3. Provide a good description of how to play in the space above your table, emphasizing those aspects that might get confused easily.
4. Leave any notes about organizing your series; ie, others can archive and start new games, or you'd like to do all of them personally, etc.
5. Post it. You're done for now!
6. When the game is done by your criteria, archive it in the Misc section, providing a summary of the game style and next to the link include in bold end words if any.
7. If your series runs four or more times, you get your own section in the archives! And if you get six or more, you get the Six Award.
Remember, creating new things is just as fun as playing it! So go for it!
Ultra Fixed Word Association: 'Duval Street'

This is a spinoff of the Ultra association. In this one, you don't have any control over what the initial words are.

Radial ultra game: 'World Sevens Series'

The rules are identical to the ultra game, except that the starting point begins in the centre of the box, and words expand out from the centre, associating to all the adjacent cells. Unless your word is in a straight line to the start word (i.e. it is in column D or row H) then it must be adjacent to two existing words.

Radial ultra cross game: 'Indianapolis'
The rules are identical to the radial game, except that some of the initial letters are fixed (inspired by the 3rd psychedelic ultra game).
Reverse Radial Ultra game 'Varduli'
As the name sugguests this is the Radial Ultra game in reverse - you start from the four corners and work towards the centre. New words must associate with all existing adjacent ones, and be next to either two existing words or one existing word and the edge of the table. The gold square in the centre of the table must be left to last and associate with all four surrounding words.
Psychadelic Word Association: Diamond association

This is a cross between ultra fixed, radial ultra cross, reverse radial ultra and 10 islands games. Add your word anywhere where it is adjacent to at least one other word, but it must associate with all adjacent words. You must leave the gold cell until last. As there are 9 columns rather than the usual 7, please try to not to use excessively long words!

Enigmatic Word Association
In this one, based off of PWA2, you don't have an active part in word associating; rather, it is your job to guess which words could fill in the blanks. There are four words put down in a flower-shape, and five mystery words around them that are related to the words that they touch horizontally or vertically. It is your job to guess which words could fit in the five blanks.

Guesses
So that this game can become self-sufficient, beneath each guess vote whether you think it works or not. If a guess gets five votes or more for it, it works. If a vote gets three or more no's, cross it off! When all five spaces are working, you can archive this and start a new one. Cheers!

Sliding Doors association: 'Celtic literature'
Inspired by the film Sliding Doors, this is in effect two games of ultra association in one - above and below the silver line. You must add one word to both games each turn, but you must use different words. You may not use a word in the top game that has been used already in the bottom game and vice versa. The idea is to see how different the games turn out.

Cubic Ultra Word Association
Cubic Ultra Word Association is similar to Ultra Word Association, except it is three-dimensional. Instead of each word appearing in a square in a two-dimensional space, in CUWA each word is in a small cube set in a larger cube.
In addition to connecting words across and down, you can also connect words up or down a layer. This means that once you get beyond the first row, each word will have to relate to three others.
Because three-dimensional computer screens are not yet commonplace, some concessions must be made to display a three-dimensional game on a two-dimensional screen. The image at right is a representation of the big cube, with little cubes marked off. In the 4×4×4 game illustrated, each layer (marked by Greek letters) is shown by a separate grid, with each grid having coordinates a-d and 1-4.
The starting word (selected at random) is placed in block a1 on level α. The second word could then go in either b1 or a2 on level α, or in a1 on level β. Similarly, if you put a word in block c2 on level γ, it must associate with the words in c1 and b2 on γ, as well as c2 on β.
The game can probably be played with larger cubes, but I figured 4×4×4 is a good size to start with. — Michael J

Skein Association
Welcome to Skein Association. This game plays like a normal ultra word association, except your associations have purpose, they have meaning, and they are useful for something.
For your first task, I'm just going to experiment with the Skein concept. Your goal is to "flip" the switch, by associating a line to it. This will clear out the blue spaces that you could not pass over before. Then, you must associate a line to the keeper of the gate, and "fight" it, by mirroring his association, with the same initial and final word, and the same amount of words in between, but different words in between. When you've defeated the keeper, turn the background color of the table red (#FFAAAA), and I will come by to archive it and present the next challenge.
You may not associate over a gray space. When you have flipped the switch, please remove all #5555FF's. They're easy to find, as they're all in a row.
When associating, you must associate with at least one word in any of the four adjacent directions.
You begin at the "nova" space, and can never associate with the other bolded spaces until you have touched them.
And don't forget that keeper, gate, nova, and switch must be associated to, as they are words too. Plan wisely. Good luck to all of you.

This is similar to the ultra fixed word disassociation, except the difficulty is compounded by there being a spiral of disassociative words, instead of a mere two rows.
Oh, and you have to associate, not disassociate. Have fun :)
Radial Ultra Disassociate-then Associate
Starting form the center, disassociate all the blank spaces in the grid except those marked "associate".Do not touch the marked spaces until the rest of the grid is filled in. Then associate the reserved spaces with ALL of the 4 neighboring words.For the disassociation portion, a new entry does not have to border 2 words- it can be legal bordering only one.
Dealer's Choice
For this game the location of the next move is pre-selected and marked with either an "A" or a "D". If the letter is A, the word must associate, if it is a "D" the word must disassociate. After entering a word, the player then chooses the location and type of the next move by placing either an "A" or a "D" anywhere in the grid that touches at least one word
In keeping with the turn-based nature of this game, the person who finishes the grid should have first dibs on archiving the old game and starting the next one, including choosing the starting word and move. For help, consult these Archiving Instructions. If, after 24 hours, the finished game is still left unarchived, then anyone can start the next one.

Psychadelic

- The first game of Psychadelic Word Association; featured ten words in random places.
- Psychadelic #2: Four Flowers (Fruit! Corn! Roll! Cricket!)
- Featured four unknown words that had to be guessed at.
- In possibly the best effort of word associationists, you had to play the game like psychadelic #1, except all of the first letters are fixed, some of them t, e, a, e, or s. There were only three letters remaining at the end. Well done.
- Psychadelic #4: Big Bang (Middle Class, Port Wine, Stage, Empire State Building)
- In this edition, you had to Expand out the entire table from one word, reaching all four corners of an 8x8 grid.
- In this flavor, you had to-- Well, why don't you read the instructions for yourself?
- Your run of the mill radial word association, with one exception...
- A remake of game #1, this time the words were the names of islands and the word "island" was prohibited.
- Psychadelic #8: Sliding Doors ("Sliding Doors" → "Dermatology" and "Province of Georgia")
- Based on the film Sliding Doors, this was two games of radial ultra in one. This game inspired the other Sliding Doors associations.

- Same as last time but with different disassociations.
- Ultra Fixed word disassociation #3 (Goulash → The Song That Never Ends)
- Same as last two times but with different disassociations.
- Associate with a sprial of disassociated words.
- Dealer's Choice #1 (Dealer's choice → Mean Streets)
- Each player adds one word, and selects location of next move, and whether to associate or disassociate.
