Instructions

Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.

DYK criteria

Official criteria: DYK rules and additional guidelines
Unofficial Guide: Learning DYK

Sample DYK suggestion strings

Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

  1. Nom without image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= }}
  2. Nom with image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= | image= | caption= }}
To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook: |article2= |article3= |article4= | (etc)
To include more than one author: |author2= |author3= | (etc)
To include alternate hooks: |ALT1= |ALT2= | (etc)
    To add a comment: |comment=
To add the article you reviewed: |reviewed=

Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.

An example of how to use the template is given below. Full details are at {{NewDYKnom}}:

{{subst:NewDYKnom
 | article = Example
 | status        = new<!--(or) expanded-->
 | hook = ... that this [[article]] is an '''[[example]]''' ''(pictured)''?
 | author = User
 | nominator =
 | image = Example.png
 | rollover = An example image
 | comment =
}}
  • Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
  • When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|September 2}} Thanks, ~~~~

Symbols

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:

Symbol Code DYK Ready? Description
{{subst:DYKtick}} Yes No problems, ready for DYK
{{subst:DYKtickAGF}} Yes Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith
{{subst:DYK?}} Query DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYK?no}} Maybe DYK eligibility requires additional work. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYKno}} No Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible

Please consider using {{subst:DYKproblem}} on the user's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.

Backlogged?

This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Created by Wetman (talk). Self nom at 00:16, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The interest of the hook lies in how late the first mention of tomato sauce is in Italy: not what you read here and there on the 'Net.--Wetman (talk) 05:10, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I thought the wording was awkward. If the interest is that you consider 1692 to be late, we should work that into another alternate. My impression was not that it was late, but early, considering it was over 300 years ago. Law type! snype? 08:24, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Article does not match the required prose size currently. It has to be expanded by about 100 characters. Date and referencing good to go (offline references accepted in good faith), but please add categories. TodorBozhinov 08:30, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Too succinct: I'm always taking padding out of articles, rather than putting it in. Mediocre food history, such as Wikipedia's article tomato sauce until yesterday, makes out that "The tomato has been central to Italian cuisine since its introduction from the Americas", when 18th century is more like.--Wetman (talk) 12:06, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wandsworth Bridge

  • ALT1:... that despite carrying over 50,000 vehicles per day, Wandsworth Bridge has been described as "probably the least noteworthy bridge in London"?
  • ALT2:... that despite being one of the busiest bridges in London, Wandsworth Bridge has been described as "probably the least noteworthy bridge in London"?
  • Comment: If not one of these, please don't try to cherry-pick a "fact" out of the article as there really isn't anything appropriate there – what's notable here is the fact that despite its importance, nothing noteworthy has ever happened there.

5x expanded by Iridescent (talk). Self nom at 20:39, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Expansion length & date verified, hook referencing verified and one ref accepted in good faith. I like this idea, it's an interesting new spin for DYK: highlighting the non-uniqueness of a topic. Fairly brilliant. ;) I think I prefer ALT1, with a rewording:

  • Length and date verified. Book sources for hook accepted in good faith. However, the fact that it was the first printed newspaper in Taiwan comes from the newspaper's website. Do you have another source?Mattisse (Talk) 19:41, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi Mattisse - note number 4 covers that claim - it's an independent source, the Historical Dictionary of Taiwan (Republic of China). Google Books shows the relevant part of the Dictionary (second entry on that page). However, that reference simply says "Taiwan's first newspaper", so if you'd like to remove "printed" from the hook, that works for me too. Thanks! Taffy (talk) 01:56, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Created by Kirk (talk). Self nom at 20:42, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

could also link to naval rating to explain why tht particular wording was used. David Underdown (talk) 10:54, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
ALT1 sounds good to me, except the clerk did more than accounting records. Kirk (talk) 13:27, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Adjusted at the article. You are missing the point, explained at rating, that in the Royal Navy a "rating" is a person (anyone without a warrant or commission), while in the US Navy persons have a "rating". Otherwise some combination of alts 1&2 is fine. Johnbod (talk) 13:53, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The RN section of naval rating begins "rating or rate is a military rank", so it seems perfectly reasonable to use it in the sense suggested. David Underdown (talk) 14:05, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It says it is a rank, not a term for ranks in general, as in the USN, which is how it was being used here. But I see below it at least was used as such in the 18th century. Johnbod (talk) 23:10, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I support removing rating completely from the DYK if its confusing, but if you look in the OED, David and I are referring to 2a.(early 1700s), while Johnbod is referring to 2b.(1893). In this case, it was a the position held by a person on a ship's books. Kirk (talk) 15:00, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That sense is surely obselete, or anyway very obscure, in the RN. Maybe it is best to drop the word, which is hardly necessary. Johnbod (talk) 23:10, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

self nom, article name is reason for not using template, Smallbones (talk) 18:16, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
perhaps it's over the top, but I just can't refuse the temptation of putting Ponzi scheme, 5th amendment, murder and stripper all in one line. I have documented this thoroughly, but please do check for BLP issues. Smallbones (talk) 18:24, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would say it's over the top, but in addition, criteria 4 states articles and hooks which focus unduly on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided. I believe that putting this on the main page would be a huge setback for BLP and would be extremely distasteful. We have higher standards for living people, and the article is comprised wholly of allegations: theft, murder, hitmen and Ponzi schemes. This may make the news, but as it is complete speculation about a living individual, good taste would dictate keeping it off the main page. Law type! snype? 01:17, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ill just say that I think it meets the requirement of neutrality - this is what is reported about the guy in very reliable sources, finding anything else is very problematic. There is nothing unreliable about any of the sources, page 1 article in the Wall Street Journal, backed by a Columbia Journalism Review article saying this is the best of the WSJ. SEC press release, etc. etc. It certainly meets the rest of criteria 4 (other than what you quoted) in your quote perhaps the most important word is "unduly." I"ll ask others to look and chime in. Smallbones (talk) 15:29, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not doubting the sources. Is it vital to the article to mention where his father lives and that his wife was a stripper? That's all a matter of personal taste. The mainpage, in my opinion, is not the place for BLPs about people who are presumably innocent, yet have articles completely based on accusations, speculation, and allegation. Law type! snype? 16:54, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This article is a BLP nightmare. Even if it is worthy of inclusion on WP, it has no place on the main page. لennavecia 16:57, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And I'm not sure about the Norwegian "independence" bit; it seems to have been a Norwegian throne under Swedish sponsorship. What precise cite in which of the three articles makes the claim? jnestorius(talk) 03:23, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Response - I obviously spent too much time trying to reduce this hook to 150 letters and keeping it a triple while not paying enough attention to detail - you're right about the year. You're also correct - it would have been a Norwegian throne under Swedish sponsorship. I'll spend some time seeing if I can clean it up tonight - if not I'll pull it. Not sure what the problem with the ISBN is. It's this book [1], and that isbn refers to the specific volume. Also, it's very interesting that he was promoted that quickly. Typically, it would take at least a decade to go from Major to Major General, and he did it in less than half of that. Cool3 (talk) 02:00, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Length and date verified. However, hook is sourced to company website which is not a reliable source for this information. Also, what is meant by "department stores"? These days there are not many so-called department stores around. —Mattisse (Talk) 22:38, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's not the only source for this fact. Will supplement. All sources use the same "department stores" term without additional elaboration. Hamlet, Prince of Trollmark (talk) 22:51, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That probably means that all the sources got their "fact" from the company website, as "department store" category accounts for a small amount of sales in the days of Walmart. —Mattisse (Talk) 23:01, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless, they were vetted and published by reliable publishers. That's the standard we go by at WP:RS. Hamlet, Prince of Trollmark (talk) 23:15, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Added a third reference for the hook: The Washington Post. No remaining objections, I hope? Hamlet, Prince of Trollmark (talk) 00:04, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That four year old article says "Especially black. Of all the socks sold, 60 percent are black, according to Gold Toe Hosiery, which should know, because the Burlington, N.C., company controls 54 percent of the sock market. Walk into any department store and more than half of the socks are made by Gold Toe. You guys are probably wearing Gold Toe socks right now. At most, you paid $10 for them."
Does that sound like a business news article to you? Does a news article address the readership as "you guys"? Which is the author: "Blue-Chip Socks Haute Hose" by Vivek Nagrani (at the top) or "Just the Thing to Cool Your Heels" By Robin Givhan? —Mattisse (Talk) 01:13, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • If Derek and Alex are still alive (probably are, since the event occurred in 2001), the hook is too negative and too controversial. Actually, even if they're dead this is quite negative, and we have higher standards for LPs. If two uninvolved people can write a book making the case for their innocence, it's not completely clear who did the crime. Shubinator (talk) 21:30, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ottava et al had a 16 article hook on March 7, 2008.--Doug Coldwell talk 22:15, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't call it a requirement (see L1) but there was a precedent somewhere for rejecting monster noms. Art LaPella (talk) 19:28, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. :( Can I request rules E1 and E2 be invoked here? They are all technically related and I discovered some links between some articles that aren't even mentioned... --candlewicke 20:15, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't remember what the ultimate conclusion was on Doug Coldwell's 16-article hook a while back (I think we ended up allowing it, right, in a greatly compacted form?) but I have to raise my voice against this one. First of all, it's illegible—both because of the sea of bluelinks and the complex embeddings. It might be an interesting hook if I can navigate it, but no one will want to take the time to do that. Secondly, the people these hooks are meant for are the main page readers, not for us; thus, hooks should be written to appeal to them, not to show us insiders how much we can do. DYK people might think it's cool that such a big hook was put together, but someone who has no idea how DYK works won't care, they'll just see something ridiculous. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 22:17, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And, for what it's worth, E1 and E2 are rules about how to use the nom template and stuff like that; did you mean something else? rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 22:19, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was referring to multiple sentences in the hook... it would mean less connecting words and maybe enhance readability. I would argue that with these so-called "monster" hooks we typically see a list, i.e. ...that X wrote A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and so on. However, this nomination does not follow that formula (and, as far as I'm aware, neither have any of my previous ones). Yet a list type nomination is often to be found on the Main Page. This hook is not such a list. It has involved more thought to link a number of related topics and, from my own point of view, appears no worse than what one would normally find at DYK (apart from problems being raised over its length). I've often seen some nominations that are blatantly obvious or that aren't particularly eye-catching make it onto the Main Page. I don't understand why length would be such an major issue. I would understand if it didn't fit but it's not that massive really... as for notions that people would think it ridiculous – is this because it is unusual? People are always complaining and thinking the Main Page looks ridiculous. It is difficult to appeal to everyone but who is to say that lengthy DYKs don't have a cult following amongst readers? It could surely look no more ridiculous than the day there were two TFAs. From that experiment (and from the previous monsters at DYK) it is clear that the Main Page does not stick to a rigid set of rules. I find this interesting because it leaves all sorts of possibilities open and this is one such opportunity. Navigating the hook, I am willing to provide the sources here and to specify which part each is for if it helps... --candlewicke 23:23, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The link is Additional rules E1 and E2 - don't tell me we've ended up with two sets of additional rules/explanations using the same numbering system... I have renamed the section because it's too long for edit summaries to be useful. On the merits of the hook, it is far too convoluted and tenuously connected to be readable. The hotel with which you start and the person with whom you finish have nothing in common. "Technically related" is putting it mildly; it reads like a nightmare game of "Seven degrees of Kevin Bacon". Please split it into more closely connected groups of hooks, rather than having more than one sentence in a hook. In no way is this comparable to the unique situation of two TFAs. I BencherliteTalk 23:52, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We do indeed have two sets of rules using the same numbering system. That's because one was intended to replace the other, but it didn't turn out that way. This is the first time that has been a problem, because additional rules are usually called "additional rule xx", and anyway links are usually provided. If this becomes a pain, we could reverse one of the numbering systems; that is, E1 and E2 become 1E and 2E. Art LaPella (talk) 02:53, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Additional Rule E1 is about the word "that", and Additional Rule E2 is about those who occasionally argue that only one sentence is allowed. So how are either E1 and E2 relevant? Art LaPella (talk) 03:15, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The hook is completely indigestible as it is. Breaking it up into separate sentences would also be creating a precedent that I'm not sure we'd want to do. I also sense it would be difficult to do. There's a ridiculous 25 noms in this hook, I see at least three separate hooks here. Gatoclass (talk) 23:33, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I beg to differ--it's not indigestible at all, and the mere fact that the articles are not simply an enumeration makes it all the more impressive--and "impressive" is a much more appropriate word here than "ridiculous." OK, so it is not unlike a Kevin Bacon game, but it is no nightmare, and it deserves a main page A for effort AND execution. Drmies (talk) 00:22, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested breakup:

The trouble with the above is that we arrive at Bazil Ashmawy out of nowhere (he is missing his connection). With regards to the relationship between first and last, I began with a cookery theme and I ended with a television programme in which one of the hook's cooks appeared briefly (source). So there is a relationship of sorts between the subjects. They are also all connected to television in some way, shape or form, the majority being either cookery or reality. What if they were run under one another in the same queue? That way the three might make more sense... --candlewicke 00:52, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
One almost always has to compromise a little when writing a hook. The Basil Ashmawy article is not a nommed article so it's not terribly important to add info on it, although one might conceivably get away with a word or two of introduction. As to your other comment, I don't see any point in running a series of hooks consecutively, we strive for variety in updates. Gatoclass (talk) 01:13, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • 3040/749 = 4.1x prose expansion. Please continue expanding. Shubinator (talk) 04:41, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • 3778/749 = 5.0x expansion. So the expansion's good. I can't find an inline citation for the hook fact, though. In general, you have large sections lacking citations. Should be easy to fix though. Shubinator (talk) 01:16, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Citations are tough, since the article was created out of several different sources. I'd have to put a ref on each sentence, and it would be rather pointless. There's no particular reference for this hook, it's just how it is. I did change around my references section to make it easier to find info that one would try to verify. But if that's not good enough, how about a different hook?...

Or something like that? -Freekee (talk) 13:46, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • This hook is verified, but the article needs more references. The DYK rules say that the article in general should use inline, cited sources. It's a good practice for verifiability. That might mean a ref at the end of every sentence, yes. Shubinator (talk) 16:53, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • I thought the first hook was hookier, IMO, but I see it doesn't fit your rules, since it doesn't appear as a concise sentence in the article. The second is fine, and properly referenced. As for the rest of the article, I didn't think it needed to have inline references at every spot, because it meets general Wikipeida guidelines for references, and I don't see a more specific requirement in your rules. But I added the inline refs anyway. -Freekee (talk) 18:16, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We were trying to avoid fluffing it. Is there an example of "genre" I can look at? In looking at D6 I think we do cover the content without belabouring it. • According to the history page, the article was 2.2kb before my edits. It was 13.5 kb (a 6x expansion) when submitted for DYK, and now it's up to 14.8kb (nearly a 7x expansion). I don't see the issue, unless you're computing the article size differently than wikipedia automatically does. If so, let me know how much more it needs to be expanded to make your 5x cutoff. Thegreatdr (talk) 19:01, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • A problem is that this article has incorporated at least one other article to create the expansion. For example, wind rose is copied word for word into this article. It has also copied, word for word, the first paragraph of trade winds and Polar easterlies. I added to the article a little to get the word count up, but then I noticed this problem. The expansion is supposed to include only material new to Wikipedia to count, I believe. —Mattisse (Talk) 20:25, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wow. Good luck determining that. Some articles, such as prevailing winds, are parent articles to others such as trade winds, westerlies, polar easterlies, and to some degree sea breeze. It has been a common method of mine in filling out stub/start articles where the research was already done within other articles with the already-researched information. There is new content being added, however, so it's not all old material to Wikipedia. Thegreatdr (talk) 16:41, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New American Tea Party

Created by Hmwith (talk). Nominated by Another Believer (talk) at 20:10, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the information in this article needs to be presented more carefully. For example, the first sentence is "The New American Tea Party is a nonpartisan[1] political umbrella organization that protests the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009". The footnote for "nonpartisan" is linked to a FoxNews report. However, the article itself acknowledges that Fox, a partisan station, has come under fire for its promotion of these parties. As many reports of these tea parties are going to be highly politicized, I think we have take extreme care in how we present this information. We need to make readers very aware of who is saying what about these events and this organization. Awadewit (talk) 06:25, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. However, the hook itself does not mention "nonpartisan", and is accurate in that it does protest the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and does relate to the Boston Tea Party. I am no FOX News fan, and I understand your argument, but I do not see how the hook can be deemed as inappropriate. Feel free to let me know if another hook would be better and I'd be happy to come up with another one. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 18:59, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But I think when we are linking to this article from the main page, we want the article itself to follow best practices, don't you? Awadewit (talk) 19:26, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. However, is FOX News no longer a reliable source to use on Wikipedia? If a news source indicates non-partisanship, regardless of their own reputation, the claim should still be able to be made. Perhaps the idea of Fox's so-called sponsorship (so-called encouragement and obvious coverage) needs to be addressed further in the article, but I still don't think it impacts the hook itself. --Another Believer (Talk) 01:21, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say Fox News wasn't reliable - I said we should make it clear who is saying what in the article. For example, there are specific claims being made by the right-leaning Fox News and left-leaning Huffington Post, but all of these are presented objectively in the text of the article. The source of the information needs to be presented much more clearly to the reader. Not everything at DYK is about the hook - we assess the articles as well. Awadewit (talk) 18:20, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • commentWhile I agree that Fox News's commentators' role in promoting the tea parties creates a problem with their use as a source ( I also question the use of commentator-driven news segments as news sources), I don't think that the apparent political slant of a news organization's members necessarily disqualifies their ability to declare something non-partisan. Unlike bi-partisan, the term "non-partisan" isn't really debatable-- either it affiliates with a party or it does not. Having a conservative or liberal slant does not affect "partisanship", which implies formal association with a party. Mrathel (talk) 21:02, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Is the partisanship really what is being questioned so much as the influence of FOX NEWS? Partisanship requires a formal connection between a group and a party; to suggest that a news network might be behind a movement does not meet the formality requirement to suggest partisanship. To suggest that there is an informal connection between a movement is really a matter of ideology rather than partisanship. Mrathel (talk) 02:49, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is missing the point. The problem is that the article is presenting an opinion as if it were an undisputed fact, which is a straightforward violation of WP:ASF. So I don't think we can feature this article at DYK until that particular statement is either appropriately qualified or else removed. Gatoclass (talk) 01:53, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand your argument. You are saying that "nonpartisan" is an opinion, but you say that I am missing the point when I argue that it isn't. Let me break my argument down one more time to clarify: "Nonpartisan" means "free from party affiliation." If a group claims to be nonpartisan, that should not be disputed unless there is evidence that the organization has a formal relationship with a political party (hence the word partisan, denoting "party). Connections between the group and a news organization, such as FOX NEWS, or its commentators, does not designate "partisanship" but rather an ideological bias. If a group claims non-partisanship and no formal connection between that group and a political party can be made, then do they have to wait until a news article stating "Study Finds New America Tea Party Nonpartsan" before they can officially state that they don't have a party affiliation? I understand the concept of verifiability, but I believe that if a group designates itself with a political stance, it is usually accepted unless proven false. Mrathel (talk) 02:29, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I concede that I did indeed miss your point. My apologies. However, the meaning of "nonpartisan" to which you refer is only one meaning. The more general meaning is simply "not partisan". I also have a problem with the supposed reference, just some talking head using the term in passing. I don't actually see anything at the teaparty website itself where they specifically describe themselves as "nonpartisan". So I think the quality of the ref. in this instance is questionable. Gatoclass (talk) 05:44, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Here [2] is an article that makes the non-partisan ref as well. I think that the bulk of the problem with the "nonpartisan" claim is that people are confusing the term. It basically means that a group does not formally have a party it supports. A group can be 100% Democrat and still be "nonpartisan" if they do not formally make the attachment. The article on CPAC describes the group as nonpartisan even though it is without a doubt conservative and 100% against the Obama administration; uniting against a party does not imply connection to another. As for the FOX NEWS ref; i think it is garbage. Mrathel (talk) 07:00, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately that link won't load for me.
Although technically you may be correct in your definition of "nonpartisan", my concern is primarily that people who are unaware of this technical definition are going to take the word at face value, and assume it means "not partisan". That's why I think it would be better placed in the body of the article rather than the intro, where the nature of the organization can be more fully discussed. Gatoclass (talk) 07:16, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have no problem with moving "nonpartisan" to the body of the article and replacing it with a term that better describes the group instead of its tax status; I was just arguing against the claim that it was POV:)If you can't follow the link, it is a L. A. Daily News article titled "`Tea party' gathering protests big bailout". I understand that "partisan" has gained connotations that force the public to believe that it is interchangeable with "ideological", but when it is used in connection with non-profit organizations, it usually refers to meeting the regulations article 501(c) of the US Tax Code. As for the website non mentioning the status; it states clearly that :"This effort is not endorsed by the New American Tea Party". Mrathel (talk) 07:45, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"Nonpartisan" is only one example of what I see as a larger problem in the article, by the way. We have left-wing and right-wing sources being used, without being credited as such in the article. I don't think that we can present highly politicized information from highly politicized sources without being explicit about the source of the information in the article text. Awadewit (talk) 23:46, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You are right in that respect. The article could be better written using only half the references in the list and better using political terms to clear the line between fact and political opinion. As it stands, it probably has too many of these issues to be on the main page. But it isn't partisan:) 00:30, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

  • There must be a better hook than that... right? How about something about its history (if a self reference is okay here) or about the languages offered? That might be cool and looks like it's well sourced. ChildofMidnight (talk) 07:05, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
... that the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University teaches many less commonly taught languages from Central Asia including Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek? Otebig (talk) 13:44, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The source doesn't actually say these are less commonly taught languages. Awadewit (talk) 20:04, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Read the intro to the Less Commonly Taught Languages article, "Less Commonly Taught Languages (or LCTLs) is a designation used in the United States for languages other than the three most commonly taught foreign/world languages in US public schools, i.e. Spanish, French, and German. The term covers a wide array of world languages (other than English), ranging from some of the world's largest and most influential languages, such as Chinese, Russian, Arabic, and Japanese, to smaller regional languages studied in the US mainly by area experts, such as Twi, spoken in West Africa, and Finnish." This is a common, completely uncontroversial use of the term and no one familiar with the term (or who has taken a minute to learn what it refers to) would challenge its use here - as such, no additional source is needed per WP:BURDEN. The source provided is there to confirm that those languages are in fact taught in this department. Otebig (talk) 21:34, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
