Timeline of world map changes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Golbez (talk | contribs) at 19:47, 22 July 2017 (the country didn't change so...). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Map of the world

Below is a chronological list of political or geological events, which would alter the appearance of a world map. Changes usually include (but are not limited to) the alteration of borders, the creation and fall of states, changes of geographical names, as well as some unusually destructive natural disasters. Through the knowledge of such dates and events, the approximate year and age of a world map could be calculated and estimated.

Not all maps of the world of an age or period will be the same throughout the globe as different mapmakers (or their employers) may have different views on the sovereignty or territorial integrity of the countries of the world or possess different levels of technological and geographical insight, the maps created by them might differ significantly.

Presqu'ile de L'llal and Presqu'ile d'Eijsden, which were formerly Belgian, will be swapped in 2018 for a former Dutch piece of land, Presqu'ile Petit-Gravier.[2]
  • July 5 - The United Nations recognizes the shortened name of Czechia for the Czech Republic.
  • April 9 — The governments of Egypt and Saudi Arabia formally agree on their maritime boundary, ceding control of the uninhabited Sanafir and Tiran islands to Saudi Arabia.[3] This decision was later nullified by an Egyptian court on June 21.[4] The annulment was itself suspended by another Egyptian court on September 29.[5] The transfer was approved by Egyptian parliament on 14 June 2017.[6]
