TV dinner edit
FYI. Your recent edit to TV Dinner removed the "[better source needed]" superscripts. I don't care deeply, but it doesn't look like that was the intent. Dan Bloch (talk) 01:26, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message
Hello, Ost316. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Refimprove and More citations needed
While {{More citations needed}} is the logical name for this template, which is why it was changed, {{Refimprove}} remains a common usage (probably more common) and a valid redirect. Refimprove is not broken, so please DONOTFIXIT, as you did here at Uralic languages. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 22:36, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking the time to write me about this. I'm aware of the templates and I do typically use {{refimprove}} when making manual edits, but it's a standard fix in WP:AWB to change templates to their real names. However, I don't see it as worth my effort to undo the edit, as it doesn't matter either way and I only save the edit when it involves other changes. If this really is a concern, I think it should be addressed with the WP:AWB features and not its users (unless I'm just unaware of an easy way to just disable the template replacing; it's a feature I dislike, because I agree the redirects work fine and sometimes are even preferable because they are more descriptive). —Ost (talk) 22:57, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- I agree, and wasn't worth my effort to undo it, either. This was more about what to do going forward. I don't use AWB, but if AWB has some sort of list or algorithm that prompts a user to do this, then, yes, it should be changed. But, I wouldn't know what to say about it there. If you want to add something there and ping me, I'll join in; if not, nbd. If I see other occurrences of this prompted by AWB, I probably won't undo those, either; unless it starts to turn up all over the place and become disruptive. Thanks for your reply, and sorry if I seemed to be implicating you in something, when it sounds like it's more an AWB issue. Mathglot (talk) 00:48, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
- That sounds good to me and no need for apologize. I'll probably consult some pages or an AWB expert to confirm I can't easily disable the feature before starting a broader discussion. Thank you for the civil message and discourse. Happy editing, Ost (talk) 16:07, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Hello
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talysh_people There is an article about Talysh in this article. This article is exaggerated by the number of Talysh residents living in Azerbaijan. Generally, this is not the same as the Wikipedia article. For example, the article about the Republic of Azerbaijan is different. The number of entries is not cited in local sources. - @Sword313:, I'm sorry, but I am not familiar enough with this topic to address this issue. I'm also not clear on which article you believe needs to be corrected. The best place to discuss it would be at Talk:Talysh people—where it was brought up in 2006—or the Talk page of the article that appears to be incorrect. There are references for the population on Talysh people, so if they are wrong, it would have to be demonstrated (with other sources) why they are unreliable. Please note that it does not matter if sources are "local sources"; what matters are that the references are reliable sources. I will note that at least one of the sources corroborates your contentions, stating:
Talyshs represent the Iranian-speaking minority in the south of Azerbaijan. According to official figures of the Republic of Azerbaijan, 76,000 Talyshs live within the country. Talysh nationalists (and interestingly some Armenian scholars) however argue that their number is significantly reduced by the official census, and they reach 400,000 and some even speak about 800,000.

AABU
You added {{one other topic}} to AABU. Which entry do you think is primary? Neither of them is at the base name. Leschnei (talk) 01:44, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Leschnei:I think that Al al-Bayt University is the primary because the page is AABU and not Aabu. AABU should probably redirect to the university (perhaps with a {{redirect}} hatnote), but I tagged it in the hopes that someone more experienced in these issues would determine the best path forward. —Ost (talk) 14:01, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. Al al-Bayt University wouldn't be considered primary unless the article were titled ABBU (or at least had a redirect with that title). I have removed the {{one other topic}} and done a little clean up. Leschnei (talk) 00:19, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
{{Better source}} goes after </ref>, not before, per template documentation
Howdy. I see you've been changing "</ref>{{better source}}" to "{{better source}}</ref>" on lots of pages. Per the Template:Better source documentation, that change is incorrect. The annotation is supposed to go in the body of the article after the footnote number of the questionable reference, not down in the References where the average reader isn't going to look.
I am not really familiar with AWB – does it have a feature that does this automatically, or are you manually telling it to make this change? If the former, someone needs to inform the maintainer(s) that that particular "cleanup" is incorrect. I have reverted your {{Better source}} change on Benjamin Forstner, as the page is in my Watchlist, but I will leave reversions of your many other instances of this incorrect change to you. Thanks, and let me know if this is something that AWB is preprogrammed to do, and if so, if you'd like me to be the one bring this up to the maintainers. --Dan Harkless (talk) 11:34, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know about the visibility expectation for the tag. I'll check my settings next time I use AWB. —Ost (talk) 15:35, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Conformal bootstrap
You keep editing links in Conformal bootstrap (two times so far). Both time you messed up links (the link to Todorov physicist started pointing to another Todorov, footballer, after your edits). I see no reason to edit the links, but if you want to edit please double-check next time that links after your edits point to the same articles as before. Otherwise I will have to undo your edits as I did two times. PhysicsAboveAll (talk) 08:45, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Take care with AWB...
This edit you made using AWB makes little sense. Generally, Wikipedia pages should not be used as sources, so the source should have been removed. I've removed the citation. Retro (talk | contribs) 01:46, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
Regarding your reversion of my 'undo' (edit 905846922), I now understand the Orphan designation. As for the appearance of the redlink on the page I authored, I do not, and never did, claim "ownership". I undid the previous edit because of my preference for the 'style' of not having redlinks in articles. Your edit, and later reversion of my undo is also for a question of 'style', not, as far as I can tell, for any policy within Wikipedia (Italian or English). I regard your approach as bullying - insisting on your point of view without the authority to do so. (We are all contributors alike.) I will not fight with you, of course, as I know that will be pointless. I will simply create an English Wikipedia page for Giovanni Scanzi, even though that seems to me to be redundant (unnecessary).
Seauton (talk) 17:20, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
- The edit summary on your revert was polite, but sounded like ownership. I tried to explain this in the edit summary, but I should have taken time to write you further. However, I may still not have noticed that I reverted you on this previously, and for that need to I apologize; my AWB list got out of date, but more importantly, I certainly should have checked the history further before undoing. I think that red links can help grow the encyclopedia by showing pages that should possibly be created, but I understand that this is editorial. If Giovanni Scanzi is notable, there should be a page in English as well as Italian, but I should not have pushed the template to force the issue, I should have checked the page history some more before reacting to your edit summary, and should have written you further. Thanks for your contributions and I'm sorry again for causing you strife. —Ost (talk) 14:05, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- While looking at all this, I noticed that Angelo Nocchiero di Staglieno (sculpture) contains non-English outside of the title of the work and has unnecessary disambiguation; this was obviously not a big deal, but I moved it to the simpler title. —Ost (talk) 14:20, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

Notice of noticeboard discussion
There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. The section is Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Temporary_block_of_User:Citation_bot. — xaosflux Talk 17:56, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

- Telling on myself so that if it is a problem someone can take action: I just ran this on the Dynamic Lists category, not seeing leading "5" (thinking it only had a 110 entries). This category is still orders of magnitude smaller than the other day, but I don't want to block usage and support stopping it again if it is causing issues. —Ost (talk) 22:32, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

Celebstrendnow.com as a source
Hi Ost316. I noticed that you recently used celebstrendnow.com as a source for information in a biography article, Anna Faith. I am unable to find any evidence or discussion indicating that celebstrendnow.com meets reliable sourcing criteria for the inclusion of personal information in such articles. If you disagree, let's discuss it. Thanks.--Ronz (talk) 15:19, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- I don't know anything about the site and simply added it based on a search to try to find something to validate the entry rather than deleting the entry or marking that it needed a citation. —Ost (talk) 19:51, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!
The Barnstar of Diligence | |
Thank you very much for restoring the appropriate edits to the pawpaw article. I can now rest on that subject. Normal Op (talk) 23:55, 30 September 2019 (UTC) |
- Perhaps you might consider restoring the other edit [1] JzG oddly removed [2] on the basis of "not a reliable source" (which I think it is). All I did was re-word a paragraph about the history of engineering in the USA; the citation was already there. The citation was quite a fascinating read and I felt it deserved my effort to reword the paragraph in Morrill Land-Grant Acts to explain it better. (It didn't communicate well at all.) The citation even has a bibliography at the end and I've checked a few of those and they seem to say the same things as the author. The author has a degree in Engineering and a Masters in History. I don't know why JzG thought it wasn't a reliable source. I can only imagine that JzG felt compelled to destroy that paragraph because he thought I was tooting some horn for KYSU — but KYSU doesn't even offer engineering degrees! (See Kentucky State University#Academics or [3].) — Normal Op (talk) 23:56, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the barnstar. I also restored the edit you mention above because I agree the source comes from a non-fringe publication and it is itself well-referenced (Adding some of those references directly could add may validity). I admittedly did not thoroughly vet all of that paragraph to make sure the source supported it fully. —Ost (talk) 02:11, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- JzG reverted it. I don't know what JzG has against it. I don't see it as an unreliable source, either. Of course he didn't explain himself. — Normal Op (talk) 15:30, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- I posted on the article's talk page because I think it should be explained why it should be considered unreliable; I don't draw the same conclusion with my understanding of policy, but I certainly can be wrong and have no interest in edit warring. If the explanation seems unsatisfactory, the next step would be to approach editors more familiar with the WP:RS. —Ost (talk)

Excuse me, but Nanetti is a set index article and not a disambiguation page, so I don't think Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages applies to it as you indirectly stated here. Geolodus (talk) 06:21, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
- I was using that tool to see if there were any other people with the surname and o add {{long comment}} to short pages. It was never meant to imply that it had to follow MOSDAB, but the formatting can be similar, especially for small pages. If there is an issue with the edit, please fix it; I try to remove things that the tool suggests that do not apply to SIAs, like adding {{disambiguation}}. —Ost (talk) 15:01, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Citation bot shortcomings
The citation tool is nifty, but one can't count on it always being right. Watch out when using it on journal citations that have a Google Books url, such as in this edit. The tool may use the name of the journal as the title, as if it were a book, whereas in cite journal, the title should be the article title. In such circumstances it's preferable to leave the unknown title blank, keeping the article in Category:Pages with citations lacking titles so that editors know that the missing information needs research. --Worldbruce (talk) 04:12, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. I will see if I can notice and correct those edits, though I don't know if User:Citation bot realizes that these edits are occurring; they may be able to catch them and put the work in the correct parameter. —Ost (talk) 18:19, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for November 5
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Alternate forms for the name John, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Soane (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 07:34, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
