Instructions

Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.

DYK criteria

Official criteria: DYK rules and additional guidelines
Unofficial Guide: Learning DYK

How to list a new nomination

Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

  1. Nom without image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= }}
  2. Nom with image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= | image= | caption= }}
    To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook: |article2= |article3= |article4= | (etc)
    To include more than one author: |author2= |author3= | (etc)
    To include alternate hooks: |ALT1= |ALT2= | (etc)
    To add a comment: |comment=
    To add the article you reviewed: |reviewed=

Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.

An example of how to use the template is given below. Full details are at {{NewDYKnom}}:

{{subst:NewDYKnom
 | article       = Example
 | status        = new<!--(or) expanded-->
 | hook = ... that this [[article]] is an '''[[example]]''' ''(pictured)''?
 | author        = User
 | nominator     =
 | image         = Example.png
 | rollover = An example image
 | comment       =
}}
  • Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
  • When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|August 26}} Thanks, ~~~~
  • If a reviewer finds problem(s) that require that an issue be addressed, notify the nominator with {{DYKproblem}}.

How to review a nomination

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets all the DYK criteria (long enough, new enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, or may suggest new hooks.

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or note that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:

Symbol Code DYK Ready? Description
{{subst:DYKtick}} Yes No problems, ready for DYK
{{subst:DYKtickAGF}} Yes Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith
{{subst:DYK?}} Query DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYK?no}} Maybe DYK eligibility requires additional work. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYKno}} No Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible

Please consider using {{subst:DYKproblem|Article|header=yes|sig=yes}} on the nominator's talk page, in case they do not notice that there is an issue.

Backlogged?

This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Super job on this article BTW. Well done! Keep it up!! Himalayan 15:00, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Glad the BBC one works for you but the UNESCO one (ref 3 in the article) goes directly to the list of World Heritage sites in United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from which you can see Bath is the only whole city.— Rod talk 20:45, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article draws on pre-existing content at Bath, Somerset; it's been expanded, of course - but 5x expanded? I'm not sure... BencherliteTalk 12:49, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Response: If you look at the architecture section of that article you will see some of the same topics eg World Heritage Site status & much of the Georgian period but the 940 words in that section of the Bath, Somerset article has been expanded to 4720 on this article (excluding infobox, picture captions, refs etc )(roughly 5x expansion). You might also want to take a look at the lead of Grade I listed buildings in Bath and North East Somerset which also has a short paragraph summarising some of the same material & includes many of the same links but in different formats, and the articles about the specific buildings & architects which will also have some overlaps. This new article brings together all the disparate threads into a new article with a different focus.— Rod talk 13:05, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • The Q1 rule doesn't necessarily need to be enforced mechanically; the rule allows for the seldom-used "discretion of the selecting reviewers". But if it was mechanical, it doesn't exceed 200 without including the ... and the (pictured), and we don't usually count either one. Furthermore, the total would then be 201 characters, and if that's the standard, then perhaps it's time to remove the "about" from "about 200" in Q1's text.
  • Or if it wasn't mechanical, I think you have to make some kind of reference to your subjective judgment, rather than just say "too long" when it would normally be considered short enough. Art LaPella (talk) 17:27, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree its too long because its not hooky. Including three ideas is too much. 200 characters are there if you really need them. I think if you decided to drop one or two of the facts in the hook I might have clicked to find out more. As it is I feel as if I know all there is to know Victuallers (talk) 17:14, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dry Dock Engine Works-Detroit Dry Dock Company Complex

Created by Andrew Jameson (talk). Self nom at 19:10, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edited down to 194, with only a little loss of info. Andrew Jameson (talk) 11:48, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Enquiry only ..."curtain walls of traditional brick" ... according to wikipedia (and my understanding) curtain walls are usually made from glass. Are these not just "walls"? Victuallers (talk)
A good question, actually, and one that makes this an interesting building. Curtain walls are typically of glass, but the defining feature of the curtain wall isn't the material, but the fact that they're non-load-bearing (so the machine shop here does indeed have "curtain walls"). The machine shop is of a fairly unusual design, in that the curtain walls are actually constructed as if they were load-bearing (with tie bricks etc), even though though the steel framing supports the building weight. The building is a conservative architectural hybrid, embracing the new (in 1892) frame structure, but keeping the traditional look of solid brick walls and standard windows. It was a little hard to boil all that down into the hook (what with the rather long article name), so tweaks are welcome. Andrew Jameson (talk) 19:35, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • ... that Great Grey Shrikes (Lanius excubitor) during the breeding season, before and after they nest and raise their young, have a particular kind of display flight which causes groups to assemble on neutral ground outside their territories to socialize?
True, but it's difficult to put it any other way (they only do this before they build nests and after the young have fledged, they do not leave spontaneously but the territory-holding groupmembers need to perform this flight pattern until enough have assembled, and so on). It's the most interesting behavioral quirk of these birds, so I put it in nonetheless. The other hooks should be fine too, though. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 15:08, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Just want to make something clear here: the rewrite is approx. 49,000 characters. Before this rewrite, the article had approx. 10,000 characters. This is ignoring the "Alumni" section in the old version. The alumni section has been updated substantially, and was removed from the Union College article upon creation of List of Union College alumni. While the current version may be just short of 5x expansion, you must note, during your review, that the quality increase is easily more than 10x better, if one could quantify the value. :) Number of inline citations has grown by 5.46 times and the history section has increased by 9.11 times. To me, this is an example where a crappy article had an unfortunate length, which negatively influences a DYK nom, in which the new version is quality writing, well-sourced, and insightful for the curious mind that wants to know more (trustworthy information) about this institution. I'm hopeful the DYK regulars will see this as a definite exception to the 5x rule. upstateNYer 21:13, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • I second that motion! Bearian (talk) 21:59, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • Sources, etc. check out. Current size 44048 / previous size 9563 = 4.6x expansion. I don't consider myself enough of a regular to approve the exception, but I think it may be warranted in this case. cmadler (talk) 20:16, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
        • More than 10 paragraphs don't have inline citations. Overall, the article is well-referenced, but since you're asking for an exception ... Also, the last paragraph in the "Rankings" section (and the section in general) has unencyclopedic tone. Shubinator (talk) 19:01, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
          • All due respect, but this isn't FAC, it's DYK. This can definitely be considered "generally complete", as is required by DYK rules. The other issues you bring up don't really fall under the DYK rules. But I will mention your issues to the main contributor. The Athletics section has the fewest citations because it's under construction (the Athletic Director at the College is currently working on it, actually). Just realized that the alumni section has few as well, which could have something to do with me creating the daughter article. I'll mention that to the lead author; he has all the hard copies of the sources. I'll also be sure to mention the tone in Rankings. upstateNYer 21:41, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • No it wouldn't, not if I understand you. If you mean that you want to add something like Scarborough Van Assembly#Models produced, DYKcheck won't count that as "prose" because it's a list, and lists are one of the categories that we don't consider to be prose (your references aren't considered prose either). Therefore the list won't count towards the 1500 character prose minimum, and therefore it won't help satisfy C1. I don't approve nominations and it depends on how they enforce it, but the bureaucratic answer is that you need 179 more bytes of prose – that is, one more long sentence or two short ones, but a list won't help it to be long enough. 5x expanded by Kirk (talk). Self nom at 19:00, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • the statement in the article is uncited, but also unqualified, nor does it support the hook. The statement runs '...was the second most important officer aboard most ships.' (emphasis mine). How are we judging importance, as it's clearly not in terms of rank. If it's in terms of necessity to operating a ship, 'second most important' seems too subjective a term to be used without clarification. Benea (talk) 00:57, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I cited the source, added the time period, and changed the lead slightly to qualify ship and remove most; just to clarify, most ships did not have an admiral on board (which would demote the master to number 3 importance), and some ships didn't have masters. Kirk (talk) 14:56, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The hook still doesn't seem accurate. It states unequivocally that the sailing master was the second most important officer aboard a Royal Navy rated ship, but that would change to third if there was an admiral (or commodore). What if there was an admiral, a captain of the fleet and a flag captain? Or the ship was carrying another captain as a passenger as well as her commanding officer? By 1827 the larger ships carried a commander as second to the captain, and by rank the master is actually alongside the lieutenants. This is the problem I have with levels of 'most important' being used. How about a hook which focusses on the duties: Benea (talk) 16:56, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • ALT1: ... that during the Age of Sail, the Master's responsibilities aboard a Royal Navy rated ship included navigating, manning, victualling, and docking and undocking the vessel?
  • ALT2: ... that prior to receiving their own uniform in 1807, Masters in the Royal Navy were sometimes treated like ordinary sailors rather than officers if captured?

Ok i added some citations and found more sources. Will this do? Omegastar (talk) 20:22, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's a start, but common practice is that DYK articles should have at least one in-line citation per paragraph. The paragraphs here are short, so I could see bending that a bit, but it's a long way away. Also, the source cited for this particular statement doesn't seem to say that (as far as I can find), and in fact, farther down the page, it says of Fabian LUZJAÑSKI(ca. 1470-1523) that "According to some authors (1), he was created cardinal by Pope Adrian VI at the end of 1522 or beginning of 1523." cmadler (talk) 20:33, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm i didnt notice that. The site-source provides links to an article about fabian luzjanski on the polish wikipedia, which, according to google translator, says "He was reportedly under consideration as a candidate for the nomination of Cardinal." But i dunno; that site is pretty reliable. Omegastar (talk) 20:48, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "DYK articles should have at least one in-line citation per paragraph. " Is this now a rule? I do hope not. Too many little rules might make entering a new article here more struggle than it's worth.--Wetman (talk) 15:12, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's not in the rules at all, nor is it "common practice". It is a GA/FA criterion, inapplicable here. Only the hook fact must be cited. However there is a problem, as the online ref (which I think is acceptable as an RS) does not state the hook fact, and indeed lists immediately below this guy another cardinal who according to "some authors" was also created by Adrian VI. Since he died while his hat was still en route, there seems to be doubt about the matter. Maybe the hook could be tweaked to reflect that. Johnbod (talk) 15:43, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Rule creep toward B-class reference level. I disagree that it isn't in the rules at all; our rules specifically say the article in general should use inline, cited sources. Simply put, you're less likely to be challenged if there's at least one cite per paragraph. [my bolding] "only to vanish because of censorship" I take to mean that "coverage in the Chinese media of events has now been banned" - as the article states. Is that inaccurate? Could you have missed that when you read the ref? It later says "Today the smelter is cold and silent." Does that not mean "the plant has been closed"?
As for the close wording - is there a rule about that? Is it not allowed? Copyright infringement is banned but I feel that the sentence, while being similar, has been changed enough. It's just accurate citing of the source. Malick78 (talk) 14:25, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I missed that part in the source, thanks for pointing it out. Is the nosebleed sentence also sourced to that ref? I can't find it.
A Signpost dispatch from April describes close wording, our policies on it, and how to avoid it. The "Adapting sources: paraphrasing and summarizing" has a nice example. This article is good for the most part, and switching around the sentence structure would iron out the remaining close parts. Shubinator (talk) 05:03, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it's not particularly interesting, but there's not a whole lot to work with here. Pulque

  • ... that pulque′s decline in Mexico is due to beer brewers' assertions that the beverage was fermented with feces?

5x expanded by Thelmadatter (talk). Self nom at 00:37, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I disagree. The hook makes no assertion about the claim being true, and the article does say that it is known to have happened in some fringe cases. As long as the hook is interesting (and I dare say it is), I think we should stick with it. That said, the article could do with some copyediting, but it is already a commendable contribution.
  • Also, I took the liberty of changing the title of the hook link to a lower case, which I suppose is an uncontroversial change. Dahn (talk) 03:06, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, the hook directly states that pulque′s decline in Mexico is due to beer brewers' assertions that the beverage was fermented with feces. it presents an unsubstantiatable claim of cause and effect. Not for the Main Page.--Wetman (talk) 05:11, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The article does state a cause-and-effect relationship and I added a citation from the excellent article suggested by User:TheMexicanGentleman However an alternative hook could be ... that beer brewers in Mexico asserted that the native pulque was fermented with feces? (the real hook is the accusation, not whether it is true or whether it really caused the decline of pulque (which Ill tell you from living here it certainly is the truth ... I prefer my pulque curado with mango :D)Thelmadatter (talk) 06:52, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, I agree that the causal relation is not referenced (though admittedly the comment I was replying to did not mention that). This is a problem. However, the hook can also be reworked to drop that causality and keep the referenced fact. Per Thelmadatter. Dahn (talk) 13:05, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand. You're using a quote that says that breweries "slandered" pulque as justification to repeat the accusation? (Apparently some small pulque producers in the 19th century or earlier had engaged in such practices, but I'm not sure why that should be used to stigmatize modern-day pulque producers on the Main Page.) --Metropolitan90 (talk) 14:00, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at the article I am not using the quote. The information presented in that article in the Siglo de Torreon that TheMexicanGentleman links to is better written than my source but basically says the same thing, so I added the reference. I suspect the real problem with the hook is that some find it distasteful, not because the assertion that the accusation was made and had a negative effect is verifiable.Thelmadatter (talk) 15:10, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, I should have made clear that it was TheMexicanGentleman who was using the quote; he gave the hook an approval check mark, and supported it quoting from an article which described breweries as "slander[ing]" pulque. Second, in case anyone was wondering, I had no involvement with the decision of another editor to undo the expansion, and in fact I posted on his talk page to ask him for an explanation, which he did provide on the talk page. Finally, I agree that the hook is distasteful, but the problem is not so much that it is distasteful but that the substance of the rumor was apparently not true at the time the rumor was spread, which itself was 70 years ago or more. By way of comparison, there have been numerous rumors/urban legends about certain consumer products containing distasteful contents or that the presidents of certain consumer products companies appeared on television to brag about being racists or Satanists. In some cases, those rumors have been discussed in reliable sources as having affected the companies' sales. But in the cases where the rumors were not true, I would strongly recommend against making them the hook for a DYK, because just repeating the rumor on the main page of Wikipedia, even while identifying it as a false accusation, could tend to stigmatize the product or company. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 01:16, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think this should be withdrawn for consideration as a DYK. I seem to be having trouble keeping the expanded version from getting reverted.Thelmadatter (talk) 13:35, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if Senor Cuete thinks he owns the article or what, but IMO his argument, which seems to say you should have asked for his permission before expanding, should not stop an otherwise perfectly eligible article from being featured on DYK. There hasn't been a problem since 13th; do you still want to withdraw? ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 03:54, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hillsboro Artists' Regional Theatre

Created by Aboutmovies (talk). Self nom at 07:24, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have a couple of problems with this nomination. First of all, I had to read the article about Bret Harrison to find out who he was. Turns out he's a C-list actor at best, so that makes this hook very uninteresting. It's not like it was Dustin Hoffman or Al Pacino or Meryl Streep that began a career there. That would be interesting. The other problem I have is that Hillsboro Artists' Regional Theatre itself isn't very noteworthy. It's just a community theatre in a town with 89,000 people living in it. Just because you can find a lot of references about a subject doesn't necessarily mean the subject deserves an article in Wikipedia. If this article was nominated for deletion, it probably would be saved because it's full of references, but let's face it, that shouldn't be the primary requirement. The subject should be noteworthy in some way, and I don't see how this theatre group is more noteworthy than 1000s just like it all over the country. Nobody famous started it. Nobody famous has performed there. No famous directors have worked there. No award-winning plays originated there. Who outside of Hillsboro even knows it exists? LargoLarry (talk) 15:43, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Then nominate it for deletion, but unless it is up for deletion we do not fail hooks for notability reasons; and interesting is subjective. As to your view on notability, I think you are confusing importance or fame with noteworthy (or to quote NOTE's lede: It is important to note that a notability determination does not necessarily depend on things like fame, importance, or the popularity of a topic—although those may enhance the acceptability of a subject that meets the guidelines explained below.), judging by your repeated use of famous. Remember part of the point of our notability guidelines is to ensure we have independent sources to verify things actually exist and to ensure we can have a well sourced article and not a two sentence stub, which helps avoid the rather embarrassing hoaxes that have been perpetrated on Wikipedia. Noteworthy is just that, have others besides the subject taken note of the topic, specifically reliable sources such as news outlets. Here, yes. Multiple, reliable sources (The Oregonian which is the main source used is top 25 in circulation, multiple winner of Pulitzer Prizes, regional newspaper) have taken note by covering it about 14 times with non-trivial coverage (and likely 100s of times with trivial coverage). And that doesn't count all the older articles that you would be able to find in some of those newspaper's archives that only go back a few years online (or a year in the case of the local paper involved here). Now, the reason we have this type of guideline, requiring coverage by independent sources, is because otherwise going by "famous" then we have too much of a subjectivity problem. The mayor of Moscow, Russia is not famous in the United States. Nor are too many members of Parliament in the UK famous in China. Or look at some of the physics theories we have articles on. How famous do you think those are outside of the physics community (sort of like your "Who outside of Hillsboro even knows it exists" argument; and for that matter how many people know about small town X outside of state Y?)? This is why we do not use fame, or importance, we use noteworthy, and that is well defined, and this article meets that guideline. We go with subjective and not objective criteria, as let's face it, that's a better way to approach the problem. Aboutmovies (talk) 07:20, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have reworked the article to fulfill this criterion, moving unsourced material out, and finding new sources. 119 is the moniker of an illustrator, unrelated to any of the other members. He/She is not linked to because he/she is not notable enough for a separate article; of the 11 members, only Shirow Miwa has an article because he is notable. 119 is also listed in the infobox as a former member. I edited the line, so it now says "...by an illustrator named 119"; is that good enough? I like the ALT3 version of the hook since it's the most hooky, but because of a lack of concrete citation, I think ALT2 is probably the best choice.-- 05:32, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
