Hindi movies

I saw that you corrected the articles of some Hindi movies from "English" to "Translation". I'll help you do this, as there are so many movie articles with "English:XXX", "lit.- XXX", etc. (partly my fault), which would best be expressed as "Translation". Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Anupam, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Thank you for the barnstar

Bahut shukria for the barnstar! It was a fun article to write. I think a history of the usage of the various scripts would be interesting to include in the article, but I don't know much about that. I'm more of a linguistics guy. To answer your question, my background and current research mostly involves languages that use the Perso-Arabic script, but I've studied some Hindi, Sanskrit, Panjabi, and some Dravidian languages too. So many languages, so little time. –jonsafari 05:56, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Urdu alphabet

Adab, John Sahib. Thanks for your questions. Nast'aliq is actually a script style, not an alphabet. Naskh is the normal style that Persian and Arabic are usually written in. It's kind of like the difference between cursive and print. Urdu can be written in either style, but Nast'aliq is preferred for its beauty. I hope this helps! Khuda hafiz Mar de Sin Speak up! 19:53, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! That idea would help a lot. Thanks --Mar de Sin Speak up! 20:57, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to help expand Urdu alphabet. There are a lot of letters (vowels, hamza, etc) that I haven't yet covered and many changes to make. Shukria! --Mar de Sin Speak up! 21:57, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hindustani

Salaam-e khudavand aap ke sath ho! If you want me to help out the Hindustani pages in any way, please let me know. I am going to remove the Hindustani pages from my watchlist until then. Keep up the great work! Yours in Christ Jesus, Khuda hafiz, Kitabparast 03:08, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Salaam. Thank you for your initiative to move The Modern International Standard Letters of Alphabet for URDU - HINDUSTANI - "THE" INDIAN LANGUAGE to a more sensible name. I thought I was the only one who thought the title was cumbersome, among other problems. You have my full support in this move. Keep me updated on this if you run into any problems. The article also has some issues with lack of citations, formatting, neutrality, and I suspect some possible copyvio problems, although I need look into this matter more to be sure. I'm sure the primary editor has good intentions, and the actual romanization scheme is fine, but the article has plenty of issues. –jonsafari 22:31, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My vote is on Urdu-Hindustani Romanization or Uddin and Begum Urdu-Hindustani Romanization, since they imply a specific, actual romanization. Romanization of Urdu-Hindustani implies the article is about the general idea of romanizing Urdu-Hindustani, which it is not. Uddin and Begum Urdu-Hindustani Romanization is fine, and a more detailed title, except it's really long. As far as I know, there isn't another romanization that claims to cover specifically Urdu and Hindustani, so I don't think there would be a namespace clash using Urdu-Hindustani Romanization.
I'll look at the Hindi-Urdu grammar IPA situation when I can. I can't claim to know enough about the language to provide a phonetic transcription, but I can probably give a moderately accurate phonemic one. But then again, it's a grammar article, not a phonology article, so a phonemic transcription is more appropriate anyways. I'm not a native Persian speaker, but I'm slowly working on it :-) –jonsafari 00:25, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the belated response. I have had little to no internet access lately, and it'll continue for a few more days. Either title is fine with me. I trust your good judgement. –jonsafari 20:17, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Walaikum Salam

I was busy doing some job-related work during past weeks, but now I am back and we can work together for our common goals towards Roman Urdu/Hindi & Hindustani. I am currently reading the article The Modern International Standard Letters of Alphabet for URDU - HINDUSTANI - "THE" INDIAN LANGUAGE. I will hit you back soon. By da way, thanx for remembering me and scrapping me on my talk page several times during my absence. Salam! -Fayyaz Abbas 31.08.06

Hello, when you want to link to the article about something Persian, please do not link to Persian, as that is a disambiguation page (which nothing should be linked to). Instead link to the one of the options found on that page such as Persian people, Persian language, or Iran, by writing out Persian or Persian. Regards, Jeff3000 06:16, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hindi and Urdu scripts

I noticed that you have added Hindi and Urdu scripts to many articles. I really appreciate your work, but it seems that their are quite a few mistakes made. Just a few tips: check Google, the right Hindi/Urdu spelling will give you thousands of results, and its best to write the script manually instead of using a software. Thanks, --Mar de Sin Talk to me! 19:45, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am really sorry for having to revert/remove your Nagari-script edits, but I felt the importance of it was too little. For example, Pakistani film is almost unheard of in India, and is targeted toward the Urdu speaking population, not really including Hindustani. And also, there is no need to put Devanagari on many Indo-Muslim articles, since Urdu is the predominant language, and if you start using Devanagari/Hindi, then the addition of other Indian languages/scripts would be justified, which would really be insignificant. Shukria aur khuda hafiz, Mar de Sin Talk to me! 21:19, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I see how Devanagari can be relevant. Nevertheless, I wouldn't think that the number of Indo-Muslims who don't know Urdu script would be too significant, but I guess it is very much possible. I will accept your changes on these pages. If you would like to learn how to fully read/write devanagari and/or Urdu script, omniglot is a great way to start. And software is a great source too, but some minor fixes must be done to the orginal phrase in order to transliterate it, e.g. pagal -> paagal, mein-> me.n, thanda -> ThanDaa . Bahut shukria aur khuda hafiz, Mar de Sin Talk to me! 01:16, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know whether putting the Devanagari script is a good idea, since Devanagari deviates so much from Phoenician, with 2 d's, 2 t's, so many ways of represent gimel, etc, and no letter at all for some sounds. Bahut shukria aur Khuda hafiz, Mar de Sin Talk to me! 00:39, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And I also believe that the other alphabets' letters on the chart are direct derivatives of the Phoenician letter, which isn't true for Devangari. Mar de Sin Talk to me! 00:41, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The thing about Brahmic-from-Phoenician is unsourced. To be a language on the chart, I would think that there is a definitive history for each letter deriving from Phoenician. For example, it it known where each of the arabic letters come from, since the abjad system was basically the exact order as phoenician, e.g. Alif, Baa, Jeem/Geem, Daal, compared to Aleph Beth Gimel Daleth. The Hebrew script was based on the Phoenician in almost the same way as the arabic, and the Greek system was really too. From Greek there comes both Latin and Cyrillic, and although deviate a bit from Phoenician, their link is still definitive. Devanagari and even Brahmi have no definite link to Phoenician, and the way the letters are arranged was based on Panini (k kh g gh ng...). And Phoenician is a Semitic script, not Indo-European. I hope this clears up anything, and let me know what you think! Thanks! Mar de Sin Talk to me! 19:04, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I have removed the Devanagari/Hindi column. If you have any more concerns/comments, feel free to discuss on my talk page. Bahut bahut shukria! Mar de Sin Talk to me! 19:41, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pugnacious attitude

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that Bharatveer likes fights, and is actively looking for articles that I edit and making provocative changes. As if to say, "Nyah nyah nyah." Zora 20:38, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I'm a Buddhist gori. American (Swedish-Texan heritage) and I live in Honolulu. I was once passionately involved in many of the Islam-related articles, just as a way of understanding Islam, but I have since tried to stay out of the fray. The problem is a continually changing roster of editors, 95% of whom have no academic training but a great many prejudices and even hatreds. We get a compromise worked out, a decent article written, and then someone new comes along and wants to know why the Muhammad article doesn't say Muhammad was a pedophile and rapist. It breaks my heart. Even the Bollywood articles are increasingly problematic. We have the Hindutva crusaders and then we have the gonzo fans who are sure that Shahrukh or Amitabh or Sridevi or Rani is the pinnacle of human achievement, perfect in every way, and that his or her article must be a shrine to the beloved one. Are American fans that nuts? I don't edit Hollywood actor articles. I wouldn't know.
Oh, and as for me being respected -- take a look at my user page and the names people have called me. I was tickled pink when I was called a Jew and an Islamofascist bitch, both on the same day! Zora 06:57, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Jal

Putting Hindi (or Divangari) in first line alongside Urdu gives a wrong idea as if Divangara is standard in the Band's country of origin. You can put Divangari in Etymology section whcih will make more sense as Jal is a very informal and almost obselete word in Urdu. Thanks! Szhaider 05:57, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A correction for the record

I do not add Urdu scripts to specifically Indian articles. I add Urdu script to only those articles whcih are relevent to Pakistan. Szhaider 05:57, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pashtun

Urdu-speaking Muslims are not Pashtun, they are just plain Indian Muslims. OK. Just referencing from the “The Joshua Project Website” is not going to cut it. I want to see a proper government census by mother-tongue to prove your claims. Napoleon12 7:58, 16 October 2006

Clearly the people with Pashtun heritage for more than three genertions ago and have lost Pashtun culture cannot be classified as Pushtuns. Nearly 25% of Urdu speaking Muslims in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India are in this category. Claiming 11 million Pashtuns in India cannot be accepted. They now belong to Urdu speaking ethnic group.

I see that the article purdah has an editwar. May I suggest that you insert purdah into the section "Other meanings" instead of the beginning of the article, because it has little relevance to the first and largest section. This way, I think both parties can be satisfied. Thanks and Khuda hafiz! Mar de Sin Speak up! 22:24, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that some articles do deserve Hindi script. However, from my perception, Pakistani bands are not really that popular across the border, unlike how Indian films are very popular in Pakistan. Pakistani films also go largely unnoticed by Indian Bollywood aficionados. For some of the articles like purdah, azad, etc., Hindi script should go wherever relvant. Thanks! Mar de Sin Speak up! 22:36, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, many Pakistani bands are well known in India and appear on Indian music sites. However, the pages with Hindi scripts should only be limited to the ones that are known in India. Thanks! Mar de Sin Speak up! 23:59, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should bring up the topic on either Szhaider's talk page or the talk page of the relevant article. Devanagari script

You're stepping into a minefield here and I may not be the best person to advise. For whatever it's worth, I'd suggest that you limit the supplementary Devanagari to material that is sold and advertised in India, and perhaps phrase it thus: "When appearing in India, or sold in India, rendered as XXX in Devanagari." That makes it very clear that you aren't attempting to claim the material for India, that you're just trying to reach out to Indian fans who might not be able to read the Urdu script. Take it slow and don't act as if you're a tank division heading for Islamabad! :) Zora 02:32, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please have a look at the talk page there. This is yet another instance of a certain cadre of editors replacing references to South Asia with the term "Indian sub-continent." Laying claim to the whole sub-continent. Zora 07:37, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:Zora, You are just being out of your senses.Pls try to look things in their proper persepective.Partition of India happened and no one here wants to stake a claim to whole subcontinent anymore. But your argument that the the word "Indian" is Inflammatory and therefore it should not be used is illogical to say the least.-Bharatveer 08:37, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The third para means it in a geogrphical term anyways so subcontinent is the more useful term.Bakaman Bakatalk 04:16, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, one use in the article was in a geographical sense. I think South Asia is pretty offensive to the majority of "South Asians" (who live in the Indian subcontinent), lol. Bakaman Bakatalk 05:29, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Bakasuprman, I hang out on a few desi blogs, like Sepia Mutiny, Bollywood Fugly, and Razib's genetics blog, and South Asian is the term used. By desis. They also use the term "brown" (as opposed to "black" or "white") but it doesn't seem to be catching on outside the blogosphere. South Asia may be denigrated in your circle of friends but in the online desi world, it seems to be well-accepted. Zora 08:07, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Afghanistan articles

Thanks for taking the time to comment upon the solid work that user NisarKand is doing in some areas of Wikipedia. The main Afghanistan article and a few others are strangely written from a modern Persian Nationalistic perspective--very wierd. Initially NisarKand's edits and attempts to insert information that was not tainted with this bias were simply reverted due to complaints, but I pointed out that a lot of his information is correct, and he has contributed a lot, so the initial wholesale reversions, at least, where removed. It has, however, turned into a serious eidt war with plenty of name-calling on all sides, though, so I'm not willing to participate until cooler heads prevail. NisarKand knows quite a bit about the history of Afghanistan and the Pashtun peoples, and it would be a shame to lose him as an editor. KP Botany 17:44, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's quite a bit of work to get the neutral point of view in. It's hard enough copyediting, alone, when it seems to engage you in an editwar, too. Salaam, KP Botany 20:26, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for notifying me. As predicted, Sarvagnya (see wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/sarvagnya) thinks that bringing a few socks and fellow Kannada users has formed a "consensus". I think its funny because AFAIK, the Hindu and Urdu users reached a compromise, and its weird how some DMK style anti-Hindi deletionism still managed to creep up.Bakaman Bakatalk 17:08, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology of Hindi

Anupam, I notice that you watch the Hindi article. I added a discussion item about the etymology of the term "Hindi" to the Hindi talk page. I'd appreciate your comments. Sarayuparin 06:03, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

Namaste Anupam, sadly the language dispute where disruptive users try to whitewash Hindi has continued, with Sarvagnya attacking me and accusing me of "promoting a nationalist agenda". I find it hilarious, being of course instrumental in bringing together, Nastaliq script readers, Devanagari script readers, Bengalis, Marathis, and Malayalis together united in a common goal. See the nice long rant at Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_arbitration/Hkelkar#Statement_on_User:Bakasuprman_by_User:Sarvagnya. We need sensible users to add some sense to that section, so its not full of nonsense.Bakaman Bakatalk 04:02, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Its about user Hkelkar (who I have collaborated with on many pages) but users like Sarvagnya and KNM have taken time to bring the Kannada-Marathi dispute to the table and accuse me of many things. Since you were the calm voice on that page, your comments would help debunk the nonsense pasted by these editors inspired by regional conflict. Its funny how you and me worked with NAstaliq readers, NAgari readers, Bengalis, MAlayalis, Tamils, and MArathis to build consensus yet we are still defined by sarvagnya as the "Hindi Prachar Sabha" or "people that will lose their minds if precious Devanagari is removed from the page". What I will lose my mind over is tendentious editors POV-pushing and disruptive editing by regionalistic editors bent on making wiki a battleground.Bakaman Bakatalk 18:37, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The discussion there might interest you. The discussion is with Zora, who accuses myself, Bharatveer, and Deepujoseph (a Malayali admin) of censorship on wiki. Yes, actually preferrably the only language link that would be there is the lang of her ethnicities (Malayali and Tamil). I cant read/write Tamil so thats a problem. I'll try and find some Tamil users though. They're working to build consensus on the case so your input will help in the discussion.Bakaman Bakatalk 15:56, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

weak knowledge

All I have to say is your knowledge is weak and poor.I dont need you to tell me about the Muhajirs first of all,as my father is one. Second of all,Urdu might have developed in what is today india but it's parent languages is where it's heritage lies.Sanscrit was spoken in Multan.Where is that? You wont need a map I'll tell you:its in Pakistan.

As for you "acadmic" vision of what you call "history",you seem to lack in it. The so called "partician of india" is my best example.A provincecalled Punjab gets divided into two states and you cry "India got divided".Syria and Turkey were under the rule of the Ottoman empire,so by your arguemnt,Turks and Syrians are "the same" or that "Syria got divded into two".

India is in fact a whole day YOUNGER than Pakistan as it was liberated a whole day later by the British. The so-called land of "India" was nothing but independant states before the arrival of the British. It only became "one"(against their will, which explains the sepratist movements all across "India" today.) when the British forced all of south asia to live as ONE COLONY. When they arrived, they used the term the ancient Greeks did to refer to south asia, but again the term meant NOTHING to the people of South Asia.

Coming back to Urdu, your arguemnt that because it was simply born in what is today India,it automatically becomes "Indian". Let's make a similar arguemnt. The modern Turkish language evolved and now is spoken in Turkey,a country geographically located in Europe.SO by your arguement, your saying that Turkish should automatically gain the status of a European language just because it happens to evolve into what it is today in Europe.-LOL Sorry but reference to the Indus is staying in Pakistan's history article and if you do happen to tamper with it,you're asking for trouble.

We Pakistanis take more pride in our heritage than you Indians realise.

Oh one last thing."educated Muhajirs"(???)I didnt know ALL muhajirs were educated.I wonder then,why 90% of Karachi(a predominantly Muhajir city)lives in poverty.Nadirali 01:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC)Nadirali[reply]

disagree with abrahimic relgions

If these projects were focused on indic versions of there faiths such xtianity in india or Islam in India, I would have no problem with it. But they do not. They are general projects that do not focus on a particular region. For example, the WP india does include all of the military history project, it only includes the Indian-task-force part of it. Zohorastrianism is related to early vedic civilization and shares similar cultures with the indic philosphies. Therefore I request that they be removed. Even wikiprojects such as iran and indonesia do not direct associations with such projects such that are listed on their respective pages.--D-Boy 02:11, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

scripts

I think the Hindi should be placed only where it's really need maybe for example a bio such as Lara Dutta and Preity Zinta. People from UP, there's mismash of Hindi and Urdu and well as others. I think Hindi there would be appropriate.--D-Boy 03:09, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A person like Kajol would not need Hindi scripts. Also, I agree with Ambroody's position on urdu especially with bollywood movies.--D-Boy 03:12, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
His position was:

My 0.02 pence.... Firstly i couldnt care less if scripts are there or not. I'd support removal of vernacular scripts ONLY if all non-English scripts are removed simultaneously. Indian articles shouldnt be held to different standards. Re:Bollywood it is really idiotic to add Urdu to Bollywood articles ad hoc, more so for Bollowood bios (Kajol article for example had Urdu but no Marathi!). Unless the said movie uses stresses on Urdu (as understood in post-1947 context) i see no point in adding urdu script to articles like say Lage Raho.

My position is urdu would acceptable say at Akbar-Jodha, Umrao Jaan, Mughal-e-Azam and bio article suchs as the khans of bollywood, K. Asif, and big b since his dad was an urdu poet.--D-Boy 04:47, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006

Project News
 • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
 • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.

Urdu poetry

Hi Anupam! Sorry I never got back to you on the etymology of Hindi. I decided to let it slide for the time being. Re: the Urdu poetry article: I did see the Devanagari and Persian script samples you added to accompany the couplet. Szhaider removed them, I think, because he thought there was no need for the script example. Are those the reverts you are refering to? Sarayuparin 21:18, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I personally don't see what's wrong with having the Urdu and Devanagari scripts there. It seems particularly germane since the article is on Urdu poetry. Having the couplet in Urdu seems topical, at the very least. Sarayuparin 22:38, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Since the script additions have been reverted before, maybe it would be worthwhile to start a discussion on the article's talk page. That way all users who are interested in the matter can voice their opinions. It's always good to build concensus for an addition or deletion if the issue is contested. If no one responds to the discussion, then I suppose you can go ahead and put the script examples back. Sarayuparin 00:18, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Anupam

Hello, Afghan Historian here. Sorry I didnt respond to your post earlier. Yeah, thanks for the comments. As I said on my profile, I just like to interpret history with an NPOV and stay true to the sources. And yes, they do show that India and Pakistan were historically one geographical nation/expression, and today culturally more or less one but split between two nations. Not that I'm advocating reunification or anything. But I am a firm believer in peace, cooperation and normal relations between the two sister states. With regards to Shah Rukh Khan and the Pashtuns, there are full-blooded Pashtuns in the industry but I dont see Shah Rukh Khan as one of them specifically. Shah Rukh Khan is a Hindkowan Pashtun whose parents or grandparents were from Peshawar. Hindkowans are Pashtuns who are bilingual in both Pashto and Hindko. They follow Pashtunwali but are more conversant in Hindko than anything. Hindko is an old Indo-Aryan tongue and the last remanant of the branch of Indo-Aryan (Sanskrit-derived) languages that were once spoken in the Hindu Kush region on the eastern edge of the Iranian plateau. These are a more like a transitional subgroup between the Pashtuns and the Punjabis, or more likely a subgroup of Pashtuns who have embraced part of a different culture but still keeping the original ancestral cultural identity. It remotely like the Parsis you know. The Parsis view themselves as ethnically Persian and yet nationally and culturally Indian. Likewise, the Hindkowans view themselves as ethnically Pashtun, but linguistically and somewhat culturally more Indo-Aryan. Just like the Parsis still follow Zoroastrianism, the Hindkowans still keep to the old Pashtunwali and martial spirit. So its not uncommon for a Hindkowan to call himself Pashtun, as that's his ancestry and background, just as a Parsi, par example Freddie Mercury, will call himself Persian. In fact, as many take Shah Rukh Khan to be an actual Pashto-speaking Pashtun, many take Freddie Mercury to be an actual Farsi-speaking Persian, without understanding the context of his roots. The page we are writing, deals with Pashto-speaking Pashtuns from eastern Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan, where the ethnic group is based. There are Pashtuns of this kind in Bollywood, the most notable being the old Bollywood hearthrob Dilip Kumar (real name Mohammed Yusuf Khan), as well as 60-70's legend Feroz Khan, who was born to parents in Bangalore who had actually immigrated directly from Afghanistan itself. Afghanistan

I have noticed your edits in Afghanistan and I have reverted your changes, because they were wrong. "Afghanistan" does not translate to "Afghani place" ... it means "Land of Afghans". The "i" in the Western transcription "Afghanistan" does not reflect the original Template:Lang-fa Afghān'stān where the "i" does not exist. It's a non-written vowel in between the "n" and the "s" that is a typical phenomen in Middle Eastern languages: two consonants are splitted by a non-existing, smooth vowel. In this case, it's an "i" or an "e". So, the correct transliteration of افغانستان would be "Afghan'stan" - "Land of Afghans". "Afghani place" does not make any sense ... neither in English nor in Persian. Tājik 10:43, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thx for your replay. I know the meaning of -stan in Sanskrit ... in fact, it has the same Indo-Iranian root. However, "Afghanistan" is deffinitly derived from Persian and thus, the only correct translation would be "Land of Afghans". Tājik 21:34, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Afghani place" does not make any sense? why don't you bring some Americans or other English speakers and ask them what does "Afghani place" translates to and mean? To me, "Afghani place" means a place (land, territory, country, nation, spot, area, space, store, shop, market, and many many others) that belongs to Afghani. The term Afghani is used as Afghanistan's currency. I am Pashtun from Afghanistan and we use the term Afghani to refer to something that belongs to the nation Afghanistan or Afghans as the people. For example: I am wearing Afghani Kalee...it means I am wearing traditional clothes of Afghanistan or clothes made in Afghanistan. Or I am buying a new Afghani Ghalai, which means I am buying a rug that is made in Afghanistan or from Afghanistan. In the English language, there are many shops named with "place" at the end, for example: "Tony's place" = a shop owned by Tony. Another better example is "Disney's Land" or "Disney's World", which means land belonging to Disney. Any place on earth can be called "place". So how can someone say that "Afghani place" does not make sense? Afghani place clearly means the place where the Afghans are found. This applies to the English and my Pashto language both. What does Hindustan means? The place where all the Hindus are found or live. Land is limited sometimes. If we were to call Mir space station "Afghanistan"...then is it "Land" of the Afghans? or Space of the Afghans? Therefore, the word "Land" being used would not make sense. The word "Place" is unlimited...it can be used for any place we can imagine. To me, Land of the Afghans sounds more silly because only Land is included, but not the space above the land....like airways or waters and perhaps other things. Conclusion, Afghani-place is the precise meaning or translation of Afghanistan. I believe the word Afghanistan was made by people on the Hindu"stan" side rather than those on the Persians side. Because, Hindustan has the oldest recorded civilization than Persians. Also, the place that was called Afghanistan since at least the 16th century, was much closer to Hindustan. That area (Southeast Afghanistan and Western Pakistan) is still heavily influenced by Indian culture. In other words...it is more likely that some authority in Hindustan long time ago decided to call the area where the Afghans lived as "Afghanistan". The only best choice to use is the obvious one that I just explained.--NisarKand 22:16, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pashtun People

I do not believe India is the home to some 11 million Pashtuns which is histoically impossible. I need to see a proper Indian census on Pashto-speakers before I agree to any changes to the article based on demographics. Also, Urdu is a separate language than Hindi which draws large influence from Farsi and Arabic. If you cannot understand that very basic fact, than you got problems. Dilip Kumar is known for his acting achievements and not his political tendencies. Plus, people want to know who Pashtuns are and not what they are doing currently. You are welcome to add that info on his article. Thank you for understanding my situation.--Napoleon12 5:25, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I still do not agree with the demographics. The article is about Pashtuns and not about Dilip Kumar or his personal hobbies. You are welcome to add that information on his personal page. Also, I am not going to debate with you on the origin of Urdu since Pashto is my first language. So, you know my answer. You should be ashamed that your government never conducted a proper census on ethnic and religious lines. Why don't you write an article about Muslim misery in India as reported by the BBC. 1. Khuda Hafiz.--Napoleon12 5:55, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
Let's not forget that Urdu is the majority language of Muslims and so-called Pathans of India, and not Hindi. Thus, you must agree with me that the Urdu language good enough in representing the Pashtuns of that region. On the issue of Dilip Kumar, I think the description is fair b/c it mentions his birthplace and his occupation.--Napoleon12 6:14 pm, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

According to You sindh was part of India ,read refrence here

http://www.geocities.com/pak_history/Sindh.html

Both the words India and Hindu are derived from Sindhu, which, in Persian became Hind and Hindu (the letter H substituted for S) and in Greek and Roman, Ind (the letter S of Sind having being dropped). The meaning of the word Sindhu is water, referring to the great river.

The Aryans called the whole of Pakistan, Kashmir and East Afghanistan as Sapta Sindhu.

This distinction continued for centuries. Arab geographers, historians and travellers also called the entire area from the Arabian Sea to the range of Kashmir mountains Sind.3 As such, there were always two countries in the sub-continent -- Sind and Hind

Thus, even for the Aryans there were two countries in this sub-continent: Sapta Sindhva and Bharat Varsa.

The Assyrians in the 7th century B.C. knew the north-western part of the sub-continent as Sinda. However, when India began to be called Hind by Persians and Arabs, and Ind by Greeks and Romans, the local people continued to call their land, Sind.

http://www.sindhila.com.pk/SINDH.HTM

Sindh begets its name from the river ‘ Sindhu’, which is primarily the original name of the river 'Indus’(Greek Sinthos, Latin Sindhus). Over the centuries it has been subjected to considerable name deviation, which are phonetic variations of root word "Sindhu". Linguistically, there have been various theories put forward accounting for the oscillatory behaviour of this name Folk/Oral history says, "Sindh" means green land and "Sindhu" means source of greenery".

Hindkowans

Hmm, that depends. Many do see themselves as Pathan or Pashtun, particularly people like Imran Khan. Others pride in their separate identity. I dont know, however, what Shah Rukh Khan identifies as, so I dont know what to call him. In any case, either's he's a Hindkowan or a Pathan, he cant be a Pashtun in the strict sense of the word, as he does not come from a family that follows Pashtunwali, nor is Pashto or Hindko his mother tongue. Dilip Kumar, however, is a Pashtun, as he speaks Pashto and actually hails from the North West Frontier Province. Afghan Historian 03:03, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hindi

Hi Anupam, sorry, you were right. I guess I read the Ethnologue entry a bit too fast and saw only the "co-dialect" statement at the end of the 'Comments' paragraph. The sentence you refer to does in fact mention 'Hindi' and 'Urdu' as varieties of Hindi:

"Formal vocabulary is borrowed from Sanskrit, de-Persianized, de-Arabicized. Literary Hindi, or Hindi-Urdu, has four varieties: Hindi (High Hindi, Nagari Hindi, Literary Hindi, Standard Hindi); Urdu; Dakhini; Rekhta."

Precisely the argument Christopher King made in "One Language, Two Scripts". I'll be more patient in the future!! Sarayuparin 19:38, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

However, you should also add a few other nations to the list, for example Uzbekistan (Persian-speaking Tajiks, ca. 30% of the population), Azerbaijan (Tati and Talysh), and Turkey (Kurdish and Zaza, more than 20% of the population), where significant Iranian-speaking communities live. Pashtuns

The problem is that the History of India discusses highly speculative history (such as the Mahajpandas) and is peripheral like the History of Iran. The article is already too broad in scope and needs to remain in the region of Pashtunistan. India's involvement is largely peripheral and not directly linked like that of Iran. As for the geography, well it's actually South-Central Asian and also culturally and linguistically closer to the Middle East (along with other Iranian peoples). The South Asian link comes from its association in the east with Pakistan and its eastern provinces as well as the legacy of British India. Also Indo-Aryans aren't an ethnic group and the genetic tests show that the links are actually with other Iranian peoples and the only Indo-Aryan speaking peoples related are the Hindkowans (whom I added myself). These references DON'T reflect what encyclopedia articles denote about the Pashtuns or reference books. The Pashtuns aren't a difficult to describe group, but I don't see how they are related to people such as the Bengali people. Related ethnic groups are immediately parallel geographically and include the Tajiks (closest), Hindkowans, Nuristanis, Dards, and a few others. Nor are the Iranian peoples an ethnic group so much as a series of ethnic groups who all seem to show a relatedness factor that does not link them directly to the Indo-Aryans who have long since separated and moved to India where they merged with local groups. Indo-Iranian is also a language group. The article I originally wrote was meant to make this clear. The Pashtuns are there own group and their relatives are those who live next to them. Indo-Aryans aren't for the most part, related. The article can't emphasize links that aren't particularly notable. Tombseye 05:22, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, your point about the Dards is a valid one. I think we should change it to the Pashai and Kohistanis which is more valid as they live in close proximity to the Pashtuns. I do agree that the Pathans of India are a large group, but my reason for not including them is b/c no encyclopedias do and neither do reference books. They COULD have an article of their own though, which may or may not work since the terminology used is confusing. By that I mean that many people in South Asia refer to Pashtuns as Pathans as well as referring to Hindkowans, Afghans in general and those of putative ancestry in addition. This makes things very confusing. I realize that people perceive things in terms of traditional views as well (while writing other articles with Khoikhoi we have come across views that are either nationalistic or simply veer away from encyclopedic standards) and so the Pathan/Pashtun divide may be disagreeable to some, but unless the usage changes in other encyclopedias, it will have to remain a reference to Pashto-speakers and others who are at least bilingual (which we've done). I will make the changes to the Dards as per your suggestion. Tombseye 05:58, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I believe I've come up with a compromise. I put in the History of India in the see also section so as to give added information about peripherally important articles. I also agree that a Hindkowan article will take care of the closest Pathan group. I believe I will start one soon. Maybe something rudimentary at first that can be added to later. Cheers. Tombseye 06:25, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just started the Hindkowans article, but just put stuff from the Hindkowan language into it. At some point we can all fix it up obviously. I just figured I'd get the ball rolling though. Cheers. Tombseye 06:38, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I changed it back to your version. Note that the devanagari spelling of the name is incorrect. The "i" maatra is attached to the "n" letter and not the "b" letter; consequently, as currently written, it sounds "bənɪ" instead of "bɪn." It was an exclusively Muhajir party of secular, middle class orientation. Rumor has it that Zia ul-Haq’s Islamist government had a hand in setting it up, to subvert the power of the main opposition party, Benazir Bhutto’s PPP in Sindh. This cannot be confirmed, but the result was exactly that, as its existence led to a civil war in Karachi. The struggle for power between the Muhajirs and Sindhis in the province of Sindh became one of the major destabilizing factors in Pakistan, arresting economic development in the country’s main commercial and industrial center.

The Battlefields of Karachi: Ethnicity, Violence and the State

By Vazira Fazila-Yacoobali

Vazira Fazila-Yacoobali is a graduate student in Anthropology and History. Najeeb Jan is a graduate student in History.

Paramilitary rangers in armored vehicles warily patrol the narrow back-streets of a residential neighborhood in the city of Karachi, Pakistan. A few months ago the presence of state security forces would have surely ignited a fierce gun battle in this middle-class Muhajir locality, a strong support base for the Muhajir Qaumi Mahaz Party. But for now a weary calm prevails as boys playing cricket in the street move to make way for these guardians of a fitful peace. Muhajir (literally "migrant" in Urdu) refers to those Muslims from Central and Northern India who migrated to Pakistan at the time of Partition in 1947. Thousands of Muhajirs, largely from urban middle-class backgrounds, poured into Karachi, transforming this small trading town in the province of Sind into Pakistan's most important industrial and port city.(1) But recently, this rapidly expanding metropolis of eleven million inhabitants has become an urban theater for what many have described as a virtual civil war between the security forces of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's government and a heavily-armed, ethnically-based political party, the Muhajir Qaumi Mahaz (MQM or Muhajir National Front), which claims to represent the interests of Karachi's six million Muhajirs.

Last year alone over 2,000 people were killed as a result of political violence. Entire Muhajir neighborhoods were transformed into battlefields as MQM youth fought with army rangers from the sandbagged balconies of apartment buildings. Despite government claims of having subdued the MQM militants, the death toll for 1996 has already reached 300.

Parties to the Conflict:

1) Government

As of October 1999, led by Chief Executive General Pervez Musharaf following the overthrow of the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a military coup. Under the previous Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the government engaged the Pakistani Police Force, Paramilitary ‘Rangers’, and troops from the Frontier Corps (Constabulary) in the conflict.

2) Armed groups: Several parties opposed to the government (and each other) are involved in the violence. These are seen to be primarily ethnic or religious groups. In addition, criminal elements, some working through the groups listed below, also contribute to the violence, a legacy of Pakistan’s involvement in the war in Afghanistan and the related drug trade. a) Sindh nationalists:

Thank you for joining. Thanks for taking the time to look at my userpage. By the way, I was listing the Urdu, Hindi, Tamil, etc by script category rather than langauge. But, thanks for pointing that out since now I may be labelling them by script name to avoid confusion. (ie. Devanagiri (Indo-Aryan), Vattelutu (Dravidian, circular scripts)). Can you help me out here? What would be the name of the syle of script used for Urdu, Sindhi and Pashto which resemble Arabic? Thanks.

Wiki Raja 23:06, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

Sorry I had to revert your edits to Pashtun people. I moved all the categories Category:Pashtun people, which makes it redundant to list them again on the main article. In regards, to the CE/AD thing, this guy once told me that "the preference of the first major editor should be adhered to." Since a great deal of article was written and expanded by Tombseye (he was the one who made it an FA), I think we should leave it how he originally had it (using "CE" instead of "AD"). Regards, Khoikhoi 22:54, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I see what you're saying. When the article was an FA, I remember that it used BCE/CE. As for your second point, I think it's not really an English issue, but more of a religious one. IMO, CE is more neutral and appropriate for Muslim topics, while AD is better for Christian topics. Phir milengay, Khoikhoi 03:25, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Devanagari script additions

I see you have been busy inserting devanagari script equivalents in a number of Buddhism related articles. Sorry to be critical, but are you aware that many of the items are spelt wrongly, especially the Pali ? I do also wonder about the wisdom of putting Pali equivalents in devanagari script -- most people don't read it in devanagari. --Stephen Hodge 11:26, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was about to make the same point vis a vis the Pali. Pali is written in various scripts, and the Roman script version has no particular defects.—Nat Krause(Talk!·What have I done?) 17:43, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Scripts in the infobox

Hi! I noticed quite a few articles of UP with Devnagiri and Urdu scripts in the infobox. [10]. The scripts make the header look ugly and so too the locator on the image. While drawing up the infobox we had come to the agreement to keep off scripts from the infobox due to rendering issues. Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:56, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anupam.Look I'd like to apologise for sounding so agressive on the talkpages like I once did. It's just that I was so frustrated and feel strongly over the subject.

Though I still disagree over many of these issues,I agree we must discuss it in a civil way otherwise how are we to reach a compromise? best regards.--Nadirali نادرالی

No i didn't endorse blocking you.I endorsed warning users from adding misleading alphabets to a certain country's alphabets.Szhaider's proposal is not to block you.It is to warn others from adding these scripts. You are not being blocked for this.No one is proposing a block for you.

Consider it part of a disagreement. Thanks alot for accepting my apology.Best wishes to you.--Nadirali نادرالی

Re: WikiProject Punjab

"avid contributor to Punjabi realated articles" you say. I strongly disagree with this statement. My concentration is on Pakistan-related articles. Pakistani-Punjabi-related articles might have come in my way during my efforts to improve Pakistan-related articles. Anyhow thanks for pointing out another orphan project related to Pakistan. I am trying to organize and refine WikiProject Pakistan. After I complete this project, I will take deep look at WikiProject Punjab. If you have any suggestions in this regard, I will be pleased to know them. Szhaider 22:35, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your support. Szhaider 23:11, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your concerns but WikiProject Punjab is very one-sided and very Indian at the moment. If you check out Portal:Punjab, you see Manmohan Singh as the only current selected biography. A Pakistani edge is required. And again, just like a project has no sense of ownership over articles, joining a project and helping it now and then doesn't mean you must neglect other projects. As Wednesday

Some info you pout in is true, but you write in these sweeping generalizations. Much of what you put is Anglican tradition, in Anglican language, in internal Anglican controversies. .OK, but thats's not how Catholics do it, or Orthodox. Lutherans and Calvinists have liturgies too, even if ytou don't consider them "strict." HarvardOxon 03:49, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Liturgically, Lent ends with the first hours of Holy Thursday, when the Sacred Triduum begins," how is this ambiguous? The Triduum remain penitential days: that's not synonymous with "Lent." As for phraseology on the other question, why does there need to be anything inserted in what is already there at all? Many "low church" Christians also have some sort of blessing rite for ashes.HarvardOxon 04:03, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Umm, the Catholic Encyclopedia text quoted is from the 1911 edition....It's a century old. You will find a multitude of references in it that read as though the 20th Century never happened, because, in fact, it hadn't happened when it was written!. We've been through the 1917 vast revision of the Code of Canon law, the 1983 second vast revision, the revision of the Missal of Pius X, the second revision, particularly for Holy Week, of Pius XII, the post Vatican II complete revision of all liturgies, and several major adjustments in the 1980s and 1990s, the Second Vatican Council itself, and NINE popes since then. Things change. read the wikpedia article on Maundy Thursday itself...it mentions clearly that Holy Thuirsday is now the most usual use in the RCC.HarvardOxon 04:33, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Lutheran Liturgy / Divine Service

Greetings, and thanks for the message. My biggest difficulty with the "Divine Service" article is its definate Missouri Synod bias--even the name, "Divine Service", is decidedly Missouri Synod terminology. If I ever do get around to working on a Lutheran liturgy page (or pages), I would like to be a bit more broad based (and, admittedly, my own knowledge of Lutheran liturgy comes much more from an ELCA-esque perspective). Right now, I think my own Wiki-contributing priority would be on improving / expanding the United Church of Christ page and related topics, but when/if I ever do get around to that, I certainly would like to expand / add more content related to both Lutheran liturgy and Reformed liturgy/worship. WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 2 - March 2007

Project News
 • Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([13]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [14]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
 • Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.

Hi Anupam. I saw the change that you made in the English spelling section in Salwar Kameez to Hindustani from Hindi. The problem is that section is talking about the pronounciation difference in Hindi alone, so Hindustani is not correct. Also the website you posted regarding it be called a "Punjabi suit" is not credible. It lists erroneously that the salwar kameez orginates from North India, when it actually comes from Central Asia. I think it is only called a Punjabi suit in India, as in Pakistan it is common in every province for both men and women. IP198 16:49, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay i see the reason why you put Hindustani in instead of Hindi. I will just change the the title to Hindi-Urdu, hope you dont mind. However for the punjabi suit i dont agree with it being in the intro. Some people also call it the pathani suit. 15 we cant gift it to the Punjabis. In Pakistan no one calls it a punjabi suit because it is common in every province of Pakistan. we should mention who calls it a Punjabi suit, and put that information in another paragraph. IP198 19:42, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I dont mind both terms being in the intro but other users, such as User:Fowler&fowler, have objected to this and have stated that they dont belong in the intro. IP198 19:58, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Devanagari spelling

Hello. I think adding Devanagari script where it's relevant like you did is a very good idea since it's more informative than romanizations but I noticed you made a lot of mistakes. If you have any doubt ask somebody who edited articles such as Devanagari or Hindi. I even remarked such wrong spellings uncorrected for a long time. Could you make a list of the Devanagari edits you did? I'm ready to spend time correcting them when needed.

Also what's the point of adding dead links to Hindi articles as you did several times? BernardM 20:14, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BernardM, thanks for your concern. I am able to fluently speak Hindi/Urdu but I am just a beginner with the scripts. My edits are viewable here. Once you have my contributions open, click on the Edit button on your toolbar and then click Find. In my edit summaries, I generally used added hindi/urdu scripts or added hindi. I hope this helps. With regards, AnupamTalk 03:16, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's exactly what I had started to do but you have made a lot of edits so it's long and difficult. You know better than anyone the articles on which you added such info. BernardM 16:44, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kashmiri Categorization.

Hello, I would just like address the Kasmiri linguistic categorization, it is extremely missleading to call the language Indo-Aryan and labelling it as 'North western'. Dardic also does not belong in the Northwestern subgroup. Dardic is a distinct group seperate to Indo-Aryan. Your classification is almost as absurd as placing Pushto in the Indo-Aryan group. The sources on the internet are predominantly Indian (hindu) and biased around Indian culture, most say that Non-Indian linguistic scholars who labelled kashmiri as Dardic were wrong and ignored its heavy sanskrit influences. However they totally ignore the fact that for the past 700 years, Kashmir valley has been predominantly muslim and 90% of koshur speaking people are also muslims, and have adopted persian scripts and are influenced heavily by Persian. A minority are misrepresenting the majority here, and it isn't fair.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Abdelchi (talkcontribs) 11:26, 2 June 2007 (UTC).

Hello, can you please add the Urdu script at Mehfil? (Or is it the same as the Arabic?) It's apparently an Urdu word, though Hindi people use it as well. Many thanks, Badagnani 09:32, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thank you very much! It looks like the same spelling as the Arabic, just a different font. Badagnani 17:06, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling in Bollywood article

Hello. I had removed Devanagari and Nastaliq spellings from the Bollywood article because it made sense to me, and I did so only after trying to discuss this point on talk page. If you feel I'm wrong, please answer me on Talk:Bollywood#Devanagari and Nastaliq spellings of the word "Bollywood". If you prove me wrong I won't insist. BernardM 16:08, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Urdu in articles

Thanks for the reply...

 • I will stop removing Urdu from userboxes.
 • However, I feel that Bollywood film are made for the Hindis however due to a similiar vocubalary the Urdus, Gujaratis and the Punjabis. Possibly this should be mentioned in the actual Bollywood article. It's also like how Tamil films dominate in the South, with Kannadans and Keralans watching them without dubbings....

Universal Hero 10:43, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive me for getting into this, but what kind of strange analogy is this? I am a Malayalee, and I can truthfully say that many Malayalees do not understand spoken Tamil (including the Tamil in Kollywood movies), even though Malayalam and Tamil are linguistically very similar. If even such closely related languages are not mutually intelligible, imagine how much harder it must be for e.g. a Gujarati-speaker (who speaks no Hindustani) to watch Bollywood films without subtitles! (Gujarati is less closely related to Hindustani than Tamil is to Malayalam.)
I think the only people who can watch any such films without dubbing or subtitles are those who can understand the language of the films very well. --Kuaichik 07:59, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anupam, Since you are one of the few consistent contributors on that page, could you please look at my post here on Ragib's talk page. Ragib is apparently taking a long wiki break. Thanks. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 14:17, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anupam, The sentence about popularity in RoI really belongs to the third paragraph and I have moved it there. The reason is very simple; the song is about Hindustan (ie. RoI, Bangladesh and Pakistan) and therefore its popularity in all three countries needs to be mentioned in one place. The same with the national anthems. It was written for Hindustan (which included Bangladesh and Pakistan). The fact that it is more popular in RoI now doesn't take away the original meaning of the song. That is why not only the anthems of RoI but of all successor states of "Hindustan" (i.e. Bangladesh and Pakistan) need to be mentioned as well. If "Pride and Prejudice" tomorrow becomes the number one novel in India, that will not merit a mention in the lead paragraph of the novel's page. The same with SJSA; it was notable before Independence and would have merited a Wikipedia page whether or not it remained popular in RoI or lost popularity in Pakistan. Mmm I'm User:Shshshsh or Shahid if you want. Not universal hero. This discussion there is too long and I actually didn't find the relevance to the Veer-Zaara page. Oooops. Ma'af keejiye...I think I took that post out of context :-D Yes, certainly, I agree that a Gujarati-speaker (for example) could find more similarities between his language and the language of a Bollywood film than, say, a Tamil-speaker. And I also strongly agree on the use of both Devanagari and Nasta'liq. --Kuaichik 06:04, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am glad you see the relevancy of both Hindi and Urdu in Bollywood articles. Sometimes, there are people who don't despite the references.
I know, really! When they're watching, say, Lagaan, don't they ever happen to notice that the name of the movie typically (or "often"?) appears in Roman script, Devanagari, and Nasta'liq before the other credits? Maybe next time somebody raises the issue, you could say, "Hey, buy a Bollywood movie tonight and see what scripts are used to give the name of the movie in the credits!" :-P --Kuaichik 05:26, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Urgent: India page

Hi Anupam, Since you are one of the people who made substantial comments in the last RfC we had on the Talk:India page concerning addition of new material (see here), I thought I would get your opinion about a new development. Yesterday, out of the blue, Blnguyen, who has no history of editing on the India page, made a post on the page suggesting that the India page be expanded to twice its size, which needless to say, has created a lot of confusion. Please see this section of the talk page there. As a result, User:Sarvagnya, for example, has returned to his scheme for de-constructing the India page. (By way of background: Nichalp, who usually watched over the article is busy this summer; Ragib, who was subbing for Nichalp is busy too. Blnguyen seems to think that the page is in bad shape and is about to be de-FA'd. He feels that it needs many more citations (and their lack) is reason enough for it to fail an FAR. Nichalp, when he was active, discouraged over-crowding the text with too many citations (especially when the text was composed in the summary-style, as India is). I think Blnguyen has some valid points: the page needs more (and certainly better) citations and the prose (especially of some new sections that were created by other people) needs revamping, but I think you might be in a better position to assess Blnguyen's idea of expanding the article to twice its size.) Jammu and Kashmir

The official language of the state is Urdu. If we are going to add Hindi because its the official language of the union, then we have to add Hindi to Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, and West Bengal. Also Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed state, so adding Hindi because it is the official language of India is pov, unless the JK goverment declares it as an official language. Actually on second thoughts, I am more interested in having a Taskforce of Hindustani and allied languages(Hindi, Urdu and Hindi languages, foreign Hindi languages, creoles, etc.). Since yesterday I have been browsing through Hindustani-related articles and besides being in a dispute related to the material, they are in a big mess in their categorisation. Categories are recursively defined, and there are several garbage pages and other pages whose titles must be changed. Here is my navigation box for Hindustani: Maquahuitl (talk) 18:14, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please have a look at the message posted on my talk page by Tuncrypt, and then his reply to my reply to it on his talk page. He just talks arrogantly, and even though I took care to deal his points carefully, he says "most of what you've said is incomprehensible and nonsensical anyway". This kind of attitude will only make new contributors like me disgusted, and we're just going to leave wikipedia instead of facing humiliation. Administrators should help new people groomed in the environment of wikipedia rather than blackmailing people that "your changes and templates will be deleted". Even after asking him to talk to me as a friend, he was more interested in showing his arrogance. Maquahuitl (talk) 12:07, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What difference does my so-called arrogance make as to what's right and wrong? That's what at issue. If you go around being sore all the time, worrying about getting your feelings hurt, you're not going to get much done.
And so it's true, pretty much everything in your replies to my points does "veer off into the inconsequential and incomprehensibly nonsensical". Your reply to my first point simply repeats what I said in the first place. Your reply to my second point is even more senseless, where you're basically just talking to yourself. Third reply is not senseless, but nonetheless inaccurate. Hindustani is the shared colloquial base between what have become Hindi and Urdu. Trust me, I know this, I contribute heavily in linguistics, having much relevant academic material in my possession. Rather than Hindustani > Hindi+Urdu, the correct scheme is as follows: "Western Hindi" > Khari Boli > Hindi+Urdu (in which H'stani is their shared colloq. base). Your reply to my fourth point again shows that you don't know what you're talking about. Here are your non-Khari Boli dialects. Lastly my fifth point was to point out that while Hindi and Urdu both have the same grammar and other things (being registers of Delhi's Khari Boli dialect), it is the general topic of literature that is the very thing that constitutes their differences, so naturally grouping literatures together as such would be the most incomprehensible thing of all. As for Premchand, classifying him as both an author of Hindi and Urdu is not silly; that is what he was. He didn't classify himself, nor others him, as an "author of Hindustani". When one wants to express thoughts beyond the most basic, one must delve into Urdu or Hindi. Overall it would seem that the confusion lies between the terms "Khari Boli" and "Hindustani". Khari Boli is a dialect, a grammatical construct, not necessarily concerned with choices of higher vocabulary, and so it is the thing under which Urdu and Modern Standard Hindi can be subsumed, while Hindustani is concerned with vocabulary, specified shared colloquial vocabulary, and so it falls as a term to describe parts of Hindi and Urdu, not the other way around.
As stated in my reply, I hope to tackle the inaccurately inflated status accorded to "Hindustani" on Wikipedia. For example, a page like this need not exist. As I've said before, "Hindustani" is not a literary language but a shared colloquial basis of others, and more importantly, these things can be, and for the most part are, dealt with on the respective Urdu and Devanagari pages. Overall the Hindi/Urdu domain of pages are very much a mess. Tuncrypt (talk) 18:01, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sayed Mohd Faiz Haider Rizvi (talk) 12:54, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks a lot for your supportive words, or else my confidence and enthusiasm would have taken a severe beating.

The most important issue that we need to discuss and understand is the semantics of the word, or rather the term, 'Hindustani'. That includes historical usages as well. I will write about this on the main talk on the India discussion page; please check there as well.
You said something: Before the partition of India, Hindustani traces itself back to Hindavi Now I don't know how much of this is true. Before this sentence you said that Hindi and Urdu derive from Hindustani. Now Hindustani itself derives from Hindavi. As far as my knowledge goes, before the development of the Sanskritised standard in the late 19th century, Hindi, Urdu, Hindustani, Hindavi all referred to the same language and the particular form, which now is known as Urdu. I am not sure who used the term khadiboli. It is obvious from the term itself that Mughals surely wouldn't have used it since for them it would have made little sense what khadi is in the boli(khadiboli means rougher dialect). It would surely have come from native people in regions who were in constant touch with the people of the region speaking khadiboli- their immediate neighbours, who could have been either Awadhi speaking, to the East, or Braj bhashis, to the South. Now I really don't understand what Hindavi means and if it means some thing already considered, then who used it.
Regarding your quoted statement from the North Carolina Univ., I agree to the Hindi part, i.e. that Hindi was "chosen" from a "base" of Hindustani with Sanskrit vocabulary, specifically. However, the statement tells little about the fact that Urdu as a standard was already well-established at that time and therefore for Pakistan, distinguishing between Hindustani and Urdu made little sense. In fact it was in India where it took some time after independence for people to accept the term Hindi and say it to be their mother tongue. See the bottom of this link from GoI- I hope you understand this subtle point I am trying to make. Maquahuitl (talk) 20:42, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What I meant by my sentence was that Hindavi was an earlier name for Hindustani
Yes, therefore I shall just be tagging those articles right now, and the discussion about the actual merger, etc. can keep going on. Apart from that, I hope you must have noticed that Tuncrypt has overwritten my box entitled "Topics related to Hindustani(Hindi-Urdu) diasystem" to "Topics related to Hindi". So now Hindustani topics is actually a redirect to Hindi topics. I say keep all arguments and debates on Hindustani, Hindi, Urdu, etc. aside, couldn't there have been just more boxes as it pleased- i.e. a "Hindi" box and an "Urdu" box by him, and then a discussion on the usage and utility of all three could have been carried out. Why was there a need to overwrite the box which I created. I found an interesting page in the Wikipedia namespace, see if you find it interesting too. I created the project page keeping in mind the fact that a coherent approach towards the Hindi languages and its associated creoles is needed. However I now doubt whether it will attract enough people. Moreover with so much of controversy surrounding Hindi,Urdu and the rest, I now doubt if it will be fruitful at all. Kindly delete the page if you agree with me, or please get it by someone else. I am sorry for the mistake. Maquahuitl (talk) 15:50, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Bihari people

Though the intention surely was reducing confusion, your merger of Biharis to Bihari people was probably not very appropriate. There are millions and millions of Bihari people living in Bihar, who should be identified as linguistic and geographic group. The Biharis/Bihari Muslims/Stranded Pakistanis ideally is identified as a political and religious entity. This is not a regular diaspora. Besides, over-riding the discussion (which is put to WP:RFC) and bringing is a completely new set of consideration without going through the problem first was slightly disruptive. May be you should participate in the discussion first. There are other editors taking part in the discussion, and there is no harm in being respectful to that community effort. Thanks. Romani people in India?

Salaam! I just noticed that you had added an estimate on the Roma people article for the number of Romanies in India, nearly a year ago [17]. I know it's sourced, but it's based on the number of Banjara in India. The Banjara aren't Romani per se, though they may be closely related. According to Prof. Hancock, at least, there are no Romanies known to live in India.

Anyway, I was just wondering whether it would be OK if I removed that estimate. --Kuaichik (talk) 00:22, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I thought this might be the reason. I suspect that is a mistake on the part of that website, but I could be wrong :-P
I would guess the Banjara could easily be confused with Romanies, because they are thought to be closely related. In Prof. Hancock's theory, the Romanies are descended (partly) from Rajputs whom the Ghaznavids took as prisoners of war. The Banjara have a legend that they, too, are descended from Rajputs who fought against the Ghaznavids.
In fact, apparently part of the legend says that some of the Rajput soldiers left (as prisoners) through the Hindu Kush, and those who remained in India formed the Banjara "tribe." Presumably, the Romanies are descended from those who left.
So the Banjara are thought to be closely related to the Romanies, but they aren't quite Romanies. There probably are actual Romanies in India as well, because the Portuguese deported many Romanies to their colonies, including their colonies in India. No one seems to know what became of them, though. --Kuaichik (talk) 16:46, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Pakistan needs you

I saw your name listed at the WikiProject Pakistan's member page. With your recent interests in Bollywood movies, I see you are contributing little to project changes. Why not make a contribution towards WikiProject Pakistan. In the main navigation on the right-hand-side, you may find a link to Cinema in Pakistan. Why not start that WikiProject. Please leave a comment here to demonstrate your interest.

For some time, we have been able to make significant changes on the Wikipedia pages relating to Pakistan and have had mixed success but lesser input. It is time that all the members join their heads together and come up with exciting ways to work on the project. I hope to see you around on WikiProject Pakistan. Pakistani articles

You should be aware that the there were significant Muslim population in Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh etc before migration to Pakistan from India in 1947. Likewise Punjab and Sindh province of Pakistan had Hindu population. Just comparing Uttar Pradesh or Bihar article to Saraiki people that you reverted as vandalism is surprising. Since there is no mention of 25-33% Muslim population migrating to Pakistan. While Pakistani pages have inundated with Indian POV. My changes in Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan‎ and Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan have also been revertes as vandalism. You have to expalin your motives. I will be be reverting your changes in few days if don't get any reply. Misaq Rabab (talk) 22:36, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Shi'a-Sunni sectarianism! What next?

Wikipedia has always had its fair share of disputes. The issues surrounding debates like creationism-evolutionism had been a source of many edit wars. But recently enough, the ball-of-chaos had landed in our very own court. Pakistani issues are now polluted with a new sectarianism, especially the biographical articles celebrating some of the most influential people in Pakistani politics. These edit wars annoyed administrators who had no idea how the problems should be dealt with. Instances of religious inclination (either Shi'a Islam or Sunni Islam) were changed from one or the other. Debates have kicked off on the WP Pakistan talk page. Recently enough, a new policy has come into discussion (actually, it's just a set of rules) that defines major guidlines for such issues. It now awaits votes from all Pakistani editors.

In other news: Akhtar Hameed Khan has finally reached the FA status and Islescape is the happiest person on Earth.

Beauties and PR

If you were lucky enough to watch that episode on Nadia Khan's show on Geo TV where Sonia Ahmed and Mahleej Sarkari were invited, you'd know that the Miss Pakistan World pageant is really the hype. At least, when it comes to controversies, the organiser know where to bring the PR campaign. Their serious POV edits which have been proven to be made by the organisers and associates of the pageant are under debate at the article's deletion debate.

Follow-up on the last issue

In the last issue, we discussed about the sectarian issues that Pakistani articles were prone to. For an update, an advocate of the Shi'a faith and its prominent inclusion into the articles, LahoreKid has been banned for an indefinite period. In the process, a citation review project page was created for providing editors with a third-opinion on vague references.

For a in-depth coverage, read the talks here. Some news issues will be addressed shortly and new activities like contests and quizzes would be announced shortly as well.

Talking of sects...

I don't want to sound like a separatist, if I say that for the past few weeks the highest number of edits on anything related to Pakistan have been on articles that concerned Baluchistan. From major editions to the article on Quetta to the 1935 Balochistan earthquake tragedy.

In other news: It is now important for editors to look into the logistics section for gaining or providing support for various things in the article such as graphics or copy-editing. So, if you need copy-editing of an article, or your article lacks a picture, please consult at this page.

I-Post

Email to Postal Mail

A convenient free postal mail service which can deliver email messages all over Pakistan. Peoples can now use their email to send letters giving you another route to communicate with others who are not connected to the Internet in Pakistan.

In recent past Internet and e-mail have revolutionized the world of communications. But those who do not have easy access to Internet and e-mail facilities could not get benefits of this facility. In its endeavour to make the benefits of e-mail available to a common man, Al Tayyeb Group has introduced i-post service. By i-post all those who do not have computer or do not have access to Internet can send e-mail by Post Office or receive e-mail through a postman. Those who have access to Internet can also send i-post to those who do not have access to Internet.

Hindi spelling

Namaste Anupam,

At nl.wiktionary we had a little problem regarding the proper spelling of the names of months in Hindi. E.g. some people seem to write February just with a ph, others put the dot underneath to make it an f. A little personal Hindi question that I hope you'll want to answer

Sorry if this is not the kind of place to ask this kind of question, but there is no one I know personally to ask this Hindi question. I have a friend who is under the impression that both "मेरा" and "मैंने" means "my" in Hindi, but I learned that "मैंने" is the nominative form of "I" (obviously). My friend is an experienced native speaker of Punjabi and Hindi. Could it be that my friend is confusing Punjabi and Hindi? Or is it that "मैंने" can mean "my" in special circumstances? Thank you for your time and I apologize if this is an inappropriate question to ask on a Wikipedian's talk page.

I ask because I found the Hindi article and recently added it to calabash [19]. I was wondering whether the Urdu Wikipedia has an article on it. Punjabi language

HI Mr. Anupam, noticing your additions of Punjabi languages in Punjabi related topic is good, but Punjabi in the Gurmukhi script is good enough for India related subjects because it is most widely used in India. Shahmukhi would be just fine for Pakistan Punjabi topics. If you wanna write in all possible modes, the you would have to include Punjabi in Devanagari script too! I guess there's no need for that. Lets just have it in Hurmukhi for India subjects. Hope you don't mind sir. Regards, Layet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Layetkaur (talkcontribs) 15:53, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am doing well. Hope you are fine !!!

For Heaven's sake, please archive your Talkpage, It's a complete mess.

 • HINDI: I hope you know that the language which appears after the Name in Bold refers to the Mothertongue of the person. I don't know what made you feel Hindi is her mothertongue. She has no relation with Hindi. Unless and until, she has some native connection with Hindi, adding Hindi is not possible. Please do not add Hindi again as Hindi appearing there is out of question.

If you have added Hindi, because she has acted in a Hollywood-Bollywood Movie, then forget about it. Tomorrow, if she works in a Tamil, Telugu movie; that doesn't mean you add her name in Tamil, Telugu and make it a mess there.

 • KONKANI: Yes, Konkani may be her mothertongue through her descent. She has some ancestral connection with Mangalore which she acknowledges. But her name is not Freida Pinto in Konkani. She belongs to the Mangalorean Catholic community. Her name is Freida Pinto only in English, not in Konkani. Remember, Mangalorean Catholcs have Konkani variants for their names, which differs from the English variant. Please read Mangalorean Catholics#Names and surnames for more information on variants. So, you'll have to find what's her name in Konkani first and then add it here. If you are not clear, please contact me. KensplanetTC 11:34, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

References for wikipedia articles

Namaste Anupam, hope you are fine. Actually I was wondering something. I am interested in writing about the supposed Hindi languages. But the problem is that not much modern day books are available on these dialects, whether in Hindi or in English. I have managed to find some books, but they are all in Hindi and were probably written 20-30 years ago. They are stored in the Digital Library of India. So are non-English references acceptable for articles in English on Wikipedia? Maquahuitltalk! 15:54, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Any clues?Maquahuitltalk! 03:08, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A lot of material about non-standard Hindi languages like Awadhi, Braj Bhasha, etc. is not available in English but only in Hindi. I don't know if that would be helpful. In any case there is hardly anything substantial about these languages on Wikipedia. Maquahuitltalk! 08:42, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(just passing by) I had some similar problems with spanish and italian sources. What I do is translating part of the text (just the relevant part, can be anywhere from one sentence to a whole paragraph) and posting it on the reference itself (if it's very short) or on the talk page (for long TL:DR parts) or both things (quote the most relevant sentence on the reference, and make a long explanation on the talk page for context). Hello, I am looking for some advices on an AFD about an urdu poet, and I was wondering if you could help. The article about Farooq Bakshi, who is apparently a famous urdu poet, has recently been nominated for deletion because there's almost nothing about him on Google. The author of the article argues that it is because most of the Urdu newspapers don't have websites, and therefore any awards or news about Farooq Bakshi can't be on the internet. However, I'm thinking that by searching for him in Urdu on Google or on BBC Urdu, it should be possible to find something about him. Please can you help or provide advices on this issue? Pashto language

There is a problem with saying that Pashto is called Kabuli. Kabuli most often refers to the Persian dialect spoken in Kabul. I could understand that an Indian census would not discriminate between various Iranian languages, but I don't think that the reference you supplied clearly says that Pashto is referred to as Kabuli. Thoughts ? --Bejnar (talk) 21:47, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. I still don't think that one conglomeration (Afghani/Kabuli/Pashto) by the Indian Census constitutes an adequate basis for an encyclopedic statement that Kabuli is an alternate name for Pashto. In looking at the Ethnologue entry that you provided, I see that it distinguishes PASHTU: Kabuli language from:
Pashto, Southern: Kandahar Pashto,
Pashto, Southern: Qandahar Pashto,
Pashto, Southern: Quetta Pashto,
Pashto, Southern: Southeastern Pashto,,
Pashto, Southern: Southwestern Pashto,
PASHTU: Baluchi, and
PASHTU: Western

The article also notes that some users don't distinguish between PASHTU: Kabuli language and Farsi, Eastern: Dari: Kabuli. The fact that some people don't distinguish, is different than saying that one thing is called another. I do not think that a strong case can be made for calling Pashto by the name Kabuli. --Bejnar (talk) 22:07, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pashto & Kabuli

Your claim that "Pashto" and "Kabuli" are synonyms is totally wrong. In fact, you are being contradicted by the Encyclopaedia Iranica, and I doubt that you can find any scholastic or official source that could eventually support your claim. "Kabuli" is the name of a very unique standardized dialect of the Persian language - this is confirmed in the Encyclopaedia Iranica. I frankly ask you to revert that false claim from the intro. Because even if your claim is true, i.e. that Indians call the language "Kabuli" (and I doubt that!), it still does not justify a bold entry in the first sentence of the article. Yuo won't be able to find a single English source supporting this claim. Thank you. Tajik (talk) 20:23, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anupam. This is not about footnotes, it's about a totally wrong claim that is being established in the article. The equation of "Pashto" and "Kabuli" neither exists in Persian, nor in Pashto or - and that is the most important of all - in English. This is the English Wikipedia, and only the most common English expressions are to be used. The sources you provide are not realiable and do not fulfill the WP:SOURCE criteria. If the expression is common in Hindi or some other Indian language, then it should be mentioned in the respective Wikipedia. But not in this English language Wikipedia. The Encyclopaedia Iranica is a standard reference work of oriental studies, it is being published by the Columbia University, and it is directly contradicting your claim. "Kabuli" is a synonym for the Persian dialect of Kabul, the major language of the city. You won't be able to find one scholarly work - in english, Pashto, or Persian - that supports your claim. Tajik (talk) 20:35, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi and thanks for your comment. The source provided by Massagetae does not support his claim at all. It only says that the Pashto dialects in and near Kabul are designated "Kabuli". That is no surprise at all, because the word Kabuli is Persian for "from Kabul". That's also the reason why the Punjabi dialect of Afghan Hindus is called "Kabuli" and why the term is - almost exclusively - used as a synonym for the Persian dialect of Kabul. I do not understand why the term should be in the lead. It's not another name for Pashto, it is - at best - only the name of a certain dialect. That's like writing in the lead of the article English language that it is also known as "Texan" and "Baltimorese". Do you understand my point? Anyway, I had not deleted your info. I had moved it into the footnotes. The information simply is not as important as to be inserted in bold letters in the first sentence. Unless you cannot come up with really good sources that would support your claim that it is an established synonym for Pashto (which it is NOT), I will put it back into the footnotes. From the Members

Welcome to the Tenth issue of the WikiProject Christianity newsletter! Use this newsletter as a mechanism to inform yourselves about progress at the project and please be inspired to take more active roles in what we do.

It has been a long time since the last coordinators election. There is a lot for people to do, and I certainly would welcome seeing any individuals with an interest in such a position put themselves forward as candidates. I in particular would very much like to see some degree of "specialization" in the coordinators, so that, for instance, we might have someone knowledgable about some of the specific Christian faith traditions or other main subjects, like Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, Mormonism, the Jehovah's Witnesses, art, theology, and so on. If any parties who have experience with some of our faith- or- subject-based content would be interested in being candidates, I would love to see them do so. Please feel free to take part in the discussion regading what the minimum number of category items is, and how to deal with the non-qualifying categories, on the General Forum page.

Hi,

I'm contacting you after long time(after 6 months).

Thanks for correcting translation of titles on List of Shia mosques in NCR.

I failed to to understand :

 • Why you changed "بھارت" to "ہندوستان" in Urdu translation? and
 • Why did you placed transliteration of Urdu text (i.e. "ہندوستان کی قومی داراُلحُکومت علاقے کی تشیع مسجدوں کی فہرست") in Hindi (i.e. "हिन्दुस्तान की क़ौमी दारुल हुकूमत इलाके की शिया मस्जिदों की फ़ेहरिस्त") by replacing Hindi translation (i.e. "भारत की राष्ट्रीय राजधानी छेत्र की शिया मस्जिदों की सूची")?

Hope to clear the situation!

Hello, been a while. There has been some vandalism with the Devanagari and Nastaliq scripts on My Name Is Khan, but I don't know the latter script to tell if it has been fixed. Do you mind checking it? I don't have any sources as to whether the official name of the film is मेरा नाम है खान or मेरा नाम खान है, but it's a relatively minor difference. If you can find a source that would be great too. Thanks - Taxman Talk 14:53, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help with My Name Is Khan Anupam. I left a longer response on Taxman's page and my page. I hope you will keep this article on your watchlist. It's great to have more editors working on it. Regards, -Classicfilms (talk) 17:24, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Warning

The Urdu script was not there for a long time and I was not the one who removed it. Now you are adding it without proving that Hindi cinema is actually Hindustani cinema. You are not answering my questions and all the old discussions you cited died a premature death with no consensus. Now, if you want these scripts to be re-added, you must gain consensus and prove your point as two editors oppose to this addition on the talk page. You are not only edit warring and adding an unrelated script, you are also showing that you are unwilling to discuss as you see it as a fact that Hindi cinema is Urdu cinema. You have added, you have to discuss and PROVE. There is no consensus now. Start a new discussion if you want. If you continue that way, I'll start an ANI on you and will take it to an arbitration case if I must. ShahidTalk2me 21:35, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please also note that you had reverted this edit of mine, which is perfectly supported by a reputable source (Encyclopedia Britannica). If you are claiming that Hindi cinema is not the official name of Bollywood, then you are truly making fun of yourself. Also note, your next revert will be a violation of WP:3RR and will instantly lead to your block. ShahidTalk2me 22:04, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was not the one who originally removed it. Another user did it and was instantly reverted by you (how surprising). The fact is that there was never a clear consensus that Urdu scripts should be there. There was also a long discussion out of the Bollywood article in which most editors agreed that Urdu scripts should not appear in the lead. Even then, it's been over a year since December 2008. No one ever touched it until you came (how surprising). It clearly shows that you are trying to enforce your views on others. Re-adding the script after over a year is like renewing the dicussion. Now the burden of evidence is again on you. Please prove that Hindi cinema is Urdu cinema. Stop removing the fact that Hindi cinema is the official name of Bollywood, which is sourced. As for the sources you cite, they do not prove it. Saying that Urdu and Hindi are identical only goes against you because it only shows that you are mistaken, and it's got nothing to do with Hindi films. And do remember WP:3RR please. ShahidTalk2me 22:17, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
First - I did not remove. YOU are the one who added. You say: "I have pointed you to several consensuses of the Wikipedia Community to keep the script" But there is no consensus!! And even if there was, no consensus can override facts. It's been a long time since these scripts broadly disappeared from Bollywood articles. You are now adding them.
As for My Name is Khan - is it an Urdu film? Please cite source that prove that My nName is Khan specifically is an Urdu film. ShahidTalk2me 22:39, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
 • There was no consensus ever!! And even if there was, no consensus can override facts.
 • It's been a long time since these scripts broadly disappeared from Bollywood articles by many different editors.
 • Another editor agrees with me on the Bollywood talk. Three editors already disagree with you. ShahidTalk2me 22:51, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just for the record, what actually matters at the end of the day is the fact that Hindi cinema is Hindi cinema and that's why it is officially called the Hindi-language film industry. Other than that, the discussion on Talk:Bollywood applies only to the Bollywood article. Every film article on which you add an Urdu script must be provided with a source that the ilm is actually in Urdu as well. ShahidTalk2me 23:35, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, you missed the point here. Scripts will be added when you gain consensus that they can be added, and they will not be included until a decision to readd them is taken. Now these scripts will not be included here. The Bollywood talk page clearly shows a consensus that such scripts should not be included. And you are not here to determine what will be until consensus is reached. You are yet to cite sources that say My Name is Khan specifically is an Urdu film. Also, you are the one who is closer to violating 3RR. If you revert again, I will report you on ANI. Pages should not be loaded with Urdu scripts just because you want to. ShahidTalk2me 18:34, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also note that this so-colled poll you have cited million times was declared as dead on this very talk page (see here). There was never consensus as this issue came back every while by different editors. It's been a year since it was broadly removed. Now you have to gain consensus to ADD them, not to keep them. Therefore, to avoid further edit wars and arguments, do not add scripts until consensus is reached. Thanks, ShahidTalk2me 18:53, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Three points, two warnings

 • I did not umerge sections, you are the who merged them. Please do not move MY messages. I add them where I want to and you have no right merging sections unless you ask me to. You can notify me about that first.
 • Read WP:RfC. This is not how an RfC should be started. The structure is incorrect. RfC must be started in a new section which must be completely neutral for everybody to make their decisions, not in a section in which you post a lengthy and incorrect message. You clearly are not familiar with the process of RfC, so please see instructions here
 • I noticed something very strange in the discussions regarding you. I'll have to consult someone. You'll know what it is. ShahidTalk2me 08:05, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If I ever hurt your feelings in any of my messages, I sincerely apologise. I think you are a nice editor, but we simply disagree, and you too are crossing limits while ignoring my posts, writing the same things and talking about a consensus which never really existed. Taxman is at the end of the day a user just like you and me). I was shocked when I added certificates and you said, "no Wikipedia does not work like that", but when you added scripts which have almost no significant importance, it was OK. If you had asked me to merge sections I would never have had problems with that, but you did not. Now you added a bolded message which clearly shows me in a negative light. Also, I did not change articles to reflect my POV. In fact, it is you who excessively added scripts to articles to reflect your POV. Bollywood is the common name for Hindi cinema, and the lingua franca of Bollywood is Hindi - both you and I know that very well. So the addition of Urdu scripts should not have been made in the first place. The use of Urdu in Hindi films, its history and decline can be added, not the scripts. ShahidTalk2me 00:22, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now that's what I call good editing, not the extensive addition of Urdu scripts in Hindi films. ShahidTalk2me 00:26, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I received the following message from you by email:

Dear Ogress,

I hope you are doing well. Your comments would be highly appreciated on the Bollywood Talk Page under the section "Scripts in Bollywood-related film articles." There is a campaign among some users to remove all the Urdu scripts from Bollywood film articles. The outcome will be decided by the Wikipedia Community, i.e. whoever comments. Since you are an expert in linguistics I thought you might want to participate in the discussion. Thanks in advance.

With regards, Anupam

"Dear Ogress"? Any contact with me on WP-related matters should be via my Talk Page and not privately. --Yumegusa (talk) 00:28, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Canvassing and edit warring

My instincts did not disappoint me. You were indeed secretly canvassing users to participate in the discussion. And this will not be spared.

Secondly, I think you miss the point. This discussion is here to prove that Hindi films are actually Hindi-Urdu, not otherwise. The language of the industry is widely, commonly and officially known as Hindi. All these films' certificates and even scripts do not have Urdu. There was never a consensus on this issue, however you try to deny it. This discussion is done to add scripts, not remove them. If you want to edit war, be my guest, try me.

Thirdly, an aside note - do not leave personal messages to me on other talk pages. Thanks, ShahidTalk2me 09:00, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orangi Town

Please stop reverting in Orangi Town. I have lived in Orangi Town so may be I know more about it. The Biharis are Muhajirs and so please stop distinguishing them. The Muhajir identity includes all Urdu speaking people that migrated to Pakistan. The nastaliq script is neither used in most Pakistani related articles in Wikipedia and nor in 200 articles relating to Karachi neighborhoods. If you have any objections then discuss your complaints in talk page. AlphaGamma1991 (talk) 21:40, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Warning and note

Anupam, do not speak about a consensus that never was - you better prove your point. I proved that these discussions died a premature death. And it's been a long time ago and since most of the scripts were removed. This discussion is in order to prove that the industry is not only Hindi. Your claims contradict the majority of the sources, the common facts, the main official acknowledgement. Do not use the words of a user who has no right to take any such decisions whatsoever.

Tomorrow I'll start an ANI about your violation of WP:CANVASS. You clearly had contacted a lot of "right" people, including Zora, Raqib, Basawala and now this recent user, to have them supporting your POV. Whether the messages are written in a neutral tone or not, they are unacceptable.

Not less important, you are the one who is actually edit warring. You are in your way to violate also WP:3RR. Consider this a warning. ShahidTalk2me 00:22, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very much diappointed by you. I previously saw a user whose opinions I do not agree with but who is still an honest person. After I found out about your violation of WP:CANVASS, the state of the discussion was more than clear to me. I have no words. ShahidTalk2me 00:31, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You are very wrong:
 • I have never removed scripts in disguide - in the case of CCCC I wrote cleanup because I made other edits as well. In other cases I clearly indicated my edit.
 • Secondly, I was never ever "warned" by a beaurocrat. It was never a warning so do not speculate.
 • Thirdly, you are there edit warring because you are the one who reverts me.
 • You deviously and massively cavassed the "right" people knowing they would support your claims on the talk page. Zora is one of them, but you've been caught, so whatever there, do not make up stories. You do not know what I was discussing with Blofeld via e-mail. I never came to him for any such thing.
 • There was never consensus and I cited sources proving why. Taxman has no authority to make decisions. Period.
 • Not less important - the discussion on Talk:Bollywood does not have results. And as matter of fact, it does not matter. We cannot make such inclusive discussions for an industry which makes so many films per year. My lengthy posts were ignored. So What I think is the right way is: if you add a script to an article, prove that it is actually an Urdu film. Let's be specific. Period. ShahidTalk2me 19:42, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
LOL you are warning me of WP:CANVASS? That's a great way to throw away your own guilt. Read WP:CANVASS to understand what canvassing is. Oh and if you want to revert my edits, go ahead, do it. I'm waiting curiously. ShahidTalk2me 19:45, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Last warning

This is the last warning that you will receive for your disruptive editing. You have not only violated WP:CANVASS by secretly calling editors to participate in a discussion, WP:WL by citing inappropriate policies against other editors, you are also violating WP:CON and WP:EW. There was never a consensus on the discussion you cited and on any other discussion you cited. If you continue with your disruptive editing, you will be blocked from editing. ShahidTalk2me 05:59, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Anupam, I hold both Shahid and you in high regard for your contributions to wikipedia, and therefore am disheartened seeing recent acrimony and edit-warring between the two of you (I won't attempt apportioning the blame). It reminds me of the internecine "warfare" that took place among WPIndia editors a couple of years back, which finally reached arbcom and resulted in a few editors being banned and worse, many other editors giving up and retiring from wikipedia (ask User:YellowMonkey about it). It would be very sad if the current dispute, which really is over a very minor matter, went down that path. So I would urge both of you (and other involved editors) to take a step back, reconsider if the dispute is the best use of your time and effort, and if you think it's worth pursuing, approach WP:MEDCAB or WP:MEDCOM to get help resolving the dispute. It would be undesirable for both you as individual editors and the WPIndia project, if the dispute escalated much further and resulted in blocks or topic bans. Hope you consider this request (which I am posting on Shahid's page too). Abecedare (talk) 22:18, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are edit warring about use of Urdu script in film articles

Hello Anupam. I have read WP:AN3#User:Anupam reported by User:Shshshsh (Result: ) and the supporting arguments. It is clear to me that both you and User:Shshshsh have broken our rule against edit-warring, and you could both be blocked. To avoid this outcome, I suggest that you promise to stop adding or removing Urdu script from articles from now until 31 March. If an uninvolved admin closes the discussion about use of Urdu and announces a consensus, then this would settle the matter, and you could resume editing with regard to Urdu. This would allow the 3RR case to be closed with no action against you. The same deal applies to Shshshsh. Let me know what you decide. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 00:43, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Result of the 3RR case

Please see the result of WP:AN3#User:Anupam reported by User:Shshshsh (Result: Both warned), which contains a warning to you. Though Shshshsh would not voluntarily accept the standstill deal on Urdu script, both parties are nonetheless bound by the result of the 3RR. You are welcome to ask for an uninvolved admin to close the discussion on use of Urdu, but until that discussion is formally closed, no more reverts must occur, on either side. If reverting continues, blocks may be issued. Thank you for your voluntary support of the standstill deal. EdJohnston (talk) 20:04, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, I agree with you. Underoath does not have the same history of avoiding the use Christian as an adjective in relationship to their genre. I don't think it makes much of a difference to them. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 20:27, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ghost: Biblical references & Judæo–Christian belief

I saw your contributions here. I am not sure if the full quote from I Samuel works. It is a bit long, and sort of throws off the flow of the article. Just an opinion, no big deal. But this seems like a subject where there is a lot more to be said. Maybe it deserves an article on its own, summarized in the Ghost article. Something like "Ghosts in Judæo–Christian belief". There seems to be quite a lot of debate about the correct position on the subject. Comments? Aymatth2 (talk) 13:53, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am not really qualified to expand the content in this area. If I tried, I would probably just get everybody upset. There are two main reasons for a separate article, neither very compelling. One is that the main Ghost article is highly active, full of controversy over whether this is a "pseudo-science" subject and frequently vandalized. It might be easier to expand and discuss content on Judæo–Christian beliefs (or perhaps it should be Abrahamic beliefs) in a quieter space with less risk of vandalism and with a discussion area focused on the subject - which may also be controversial, but for entirely different reasons. The other is that the main Ghost article should give a balanced overview, and ideally would just be a series of summaries of more specialized articles. I could see coverage of this aspect getting quite large, perhaps excessively so since ghost belief is not as significant in the monotheistic religions as it was with the old animist religions and is with Hinduism or Buddhism. So there could be advantages. But I don't think I am going to start it, just thought you might want to. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:12, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thank you for posting at the ArbCom. I appreciate it, and all the more because I did not expect it.

Is there any reason you have not started a User talk:Anupam/Archive 3? Alastair Haines (talk) 09:54, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is List of Shia mosques in NCR. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Shia mosques in NCR. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:11, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your undue Dilazak Page Edits

Dear Anupam By now I have seen all your efforts for Wikipedia. I am compelled to write few words in a direct way because I see one person with either one point agenda or a pseudo styled Master of all sciences. Please forgive me but your edits without due knowledge and without reading my discussion page are quite unnecessary. We in Asia take our ancestry from Father side and not from Mother side. A tribe in our world is not by speaking a particular language but by the genes one carries. You though Indian don't seem to know this little fact. Moreover, You seem inclined to prove Afghans as Hindic people. Sorry but you are you and We are We. Also you time and again revert my page with your edits" The Dilazak are found in Afghanistan and Pakistan" whereas there is hardly any Dilazak in Afghanistan, if you know their history. I gave you reference to Ishhat Khan's website in Utterperdesh who is Dilazak and there are many many more in India. Please do not edit unless you discuss first. I will surely complaint against you in very near future but till then please don't try to mix yourself with US. RegardsDilazak1 (talk) 20:30, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Greater Punjab

Since we seem to have differing opinions on this issue and read the sources differently, I've asked for other editors to chime in at Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#Greater_Punjab_region and let's see how it's resolved. On further reading of other books that I have, I'm quite sure that I disagree with the Greater Punjab addition now. —SpacemanSpiff 03:46, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add or change content without citing verifiable and reliable sources, as you did to Infidel. Before making any potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. Jayjg (talk) 00:34, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

Nice Job

Hello Anupam, just doing some browsing and ran across the very nice article you expanded on the Dard people. Those old British books can be quite an interesting resource. Thanks. Joshdboz (talk) 18:43, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was actually reading The Gilgit Game, a really excellent book on 19th century exploration of the Pamirs by John Keay, and naturally much of the research at that time was on the relatively unknown Dards and Dardic languages, especially by the likes of G.W. Leitner. I was curious to see if we had some relevant article coverage, and was pleasantly surprised to see we did. It's quite a region, now if it only becomes safe enough to visit... WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

Hi Anupam, I have been told to contact someone at Wikipedia pakistan after writing to one of the admins on Wikipedia English. This is what are my concern about an article, I am merely pasting what I had written on the English section, I would need your feedback.

"Dear sir, I have spent quite some time collecting information about Thathaals,. I did not find any information other than wikipedia article pasted on certain sites. I also belong to the same clan and very much occupied to know about my origin. Here is my opinion about the article.

This article is nothing but a crap, there are certain people who are busy "creating history" rather than reflecting history. The real purpose of this article is shown by the this sentence (paragraph " modern history, last sentence)" However, now, at present there is no difference between other Rajput Jat tribes and the great Thathaals.

People behind this article are too much occupied to establish "Thathaal" as Jatt clan, rather than Rajput. the truth is that caste is a herditary thing, one can not change it, you are born in one caste, and you can't change that "fact". The article had started as Thothaal which was correct, but later the title of the article has been changed. second thing about Thothal is that they are not Jat but rajput, this was correctly mentioned by some earlier editor in the "View history".

The article start with the claim that "They are said to be descendants of legendary Raja Karan Singh of the Mahabharata[2]." The truth is that Karan Singh (Karna) is never mentioned as Karan Singh in the Whole book Mahabharata. He is just mentioned karna and not having any surname, like all other charachters in the book. The word Singh( means "lion") was introduced by Rajput about one thousand year after the Mahabharata was written.

Second claim: Thathaals claim their kinship with a Suryavanshi Rajput Raja Karan Singh through his son Raja Thathoo, In Mahabharata we learn that Karna had nine sons (One does not need to read whole Mahabharata, this could be checked in wiki article about Karna], but none of his son had name "Thathoo".

"Some of the persons from Thathaal tribe converted to Islam during period of Mehmood of Ghazna[4]". there is no proof for this. In fact this could be checked in any Indian history book, Mehmood never stayed in India, he just invaded and plundered India several times and left back to Ghazni, Afghanistan.

The village "Mohmud Chak " is not the right name, the real name is "Mehmad Chak" and nothing to do with "Essa Khan Mohmand". There are many people from " Mehmad chak" living in Norway. In fact, none of the "reference" could be checked to find that if the reference support the claim. there are only six "working" which could be checked ( five of those are sorted by me and those are about villages and one about adil khan)

THE TRUTH ABOUT THATHAAL: The true word is "Thothal" and not "Thathaal", this I learend when in 2000 I wanted to sell some property in my home country, I went to the court to sign documents, I found that my caste was written "Thothal" and not "Thathal", I asked them to "correct" it, but I was told, "you people may like to call yourself whatever you like but in the official papers you are registered as Thothal", second thing I learned that we are Rajputs and not Jatts. When I come back to Norway, I contacted the oldest man from " Thothal( Thathal)" clan. I was told "there was a king of Kashmir ( the kingdom of karna is not Kashmir but Anga (present day Bhagalpur ), whose name was Karan singh, the real time of Karan Singh is unknown. Karan singh had a son whose name was " Thotho" add NOT "Thathoo" as mentioned in the article. The descendants of Thotho were called Ththo-Al. Al means "descendant". Thotho-al means " the descendant of Thotho. With the passage of time the word Thotho-al became Thothal."

Many people called themselve Thathal because they either don´t know the real word or they just speak carelessly. The word which is registerd in the official documents like at muncipal committees is Thothal and NOT Thathal. As far it goes for the villages, I did not find village with the name thathaal, but I found a village with the name" Thothal". I have problem accepting the later history of Thothals, because there is no source which could be checked. I am fairly well informed when it comes to my background , but i never learned these stories which are mentioned in the article. There is a book which have been mentioned as a source which is " A Glossary of the Tribe and casts of the Punjab and North-West Frontier Provinces by E.D. Maclagan and H.A. Rose", Here is the link to the book, http://openlibrary.org/books/OL14009905M/glossary_of_the_tribes_and_castes_of_the_Punjab_and_North-West_frontier_province.# . One can read this book online, I did not find anything about those claims which are in the article. Sorry, for writing so much. In fact I want to edit the article and delete almost 95% of the article because the claims are not justfied, but I havn't done anything because i don't want to get in trouble or get accusation for vendalism" Regards.Jogibaba (talk) 09:27, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to disappoint you but I already have admin approval (See here). BTW, I would not tolerate such insults even if they were directed to you, so I'm disappointed that you insist on having them. Also, you not only reverted me and restored the other user's attacks, you also reverted some of my modifications of MY edits, and it is unacceptable. ShahidTalk2me 20:38, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are very very wrong. The discussion concerned SCRIPTS, not languages

First, you reverted me describing my edits as vandalism and it is actually an act of vandalism from your side. Second, all the discussions, all the arguments and even the final administrative decision was in regards to scripts and only SCRIPTS. As for the language of the films, it is Hindi and it is a fact which is not questionable by any means. Go see the film's official certificate. If you can prove that PKGspecifically is an Urdu movie, then go ahead, make my day. I did NOT remove the Urdu script itself, and no admin would be able to prohibit others from modifying language fields, because it's the most factual thing out there. If I must, I'll take it to WP:FILM and even turn to higher authorities on Wikipedia. Also, do not make an important figure of yourself by threatening me like this, you don't scare me, friend, so feel free to do whatever you want, but beware of edit wars because this time it will not turn out to be so good for you. And don't think your canvassing has been forgotten, it will be noted and reported again (as I found you have been doing it many a time down history). You contacted secretly people who share the same point of view as yours, and that's what created a true mess despite the fact that several editors, who were NOT canvassed, opposed to having scripts. I accept the fact that no consensus exists and scripts cannot be added or removed, but the languages of films is more than clear and does not need consensus in the first place. Hope I was clear. You are repeating your usual mantra od speculations, just copying an old message you sent me on Talk:Bollywood. How can you prove that I reported Himalatyan Explorer about that? Can you? Did Yellow Monkey came to the discussion? (He does not een understand in Hindi and Urdu stuff to begin with and I merely informed him about what I was doing). While YOU have gone on sending messages to people to come and support you. You are using Taxman's name and position while he is not even an uninvolved party in the discussion (he clearly thanked you once for adding scripts). You have been warned a few years ago for canvassing, and even the spam messages you sent to people who think just like you, such as Zora and the user who found your canvassing improper, returned back to you. And there was never consensus on the issue, and I proved why. User:Taxman, who shares you point of view, does not take deicisons here. You are also stalking me, which is quite funny. My edit will NOT be reverted, and if it is, not for a long time. Feel free to contact whoever you want. We have only discussed scripts and NOT languages. That's where it ends. ShahidTalk2me 21:33, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Another speculation. Your violations were once skipped, but only once, trust me. You don't even understand the meaning of a Bureaucrat and have been wikilawyering as it's been confirmed by an admin in a surprising e-mail I got some time ago. My block log is none of your business. Even the admin who blocked me apologised for doing so and said I am a constructive editor, not that I feel like justifying to someone like you. I don't go around adding useless scripts. I contribute to this project without having to enforce biased views. Cheers. ShahidTalk2me 21:49, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's funny! Open your eyes. It was only two blocks. The first one was a mistake and the admin unblocked me twice. If you wanna know what my reputation and accomplishments are, have a look at my user page. Still, it is none of your business so you can go and do what you are best at, adding scripts and cavassing people. I even see old warnings of canvassing here on your very talk page. As I said, do try to read and understand the meaning of a bureaucrat before throwing Taxman's name into every discussion. I received a mail from an admin who totally agreed with what I say now, so people know you are not as innocent as you try to look. Secondly Taxman is not an uninvolved party in the issue. You were just citing the same previous old discussions stating "consensus!", while I proved why there was NO consensus, analysing every link of yours. As for my report about you, by saying that it was unconvincing you are putting words into the mouth of the closing admin, and this will be reported one day. At the end of it you were warned and the result spoke to both you and me. At least I did everything with sheer honesty, and did not resort to secret e-mail messages to solve my problem and enforce my POV.
As for my edit, it is perfectly fine. All our discussions and the last decision by EdJohnston were about SCRIPTS. The language of the film is Hindi, not Urdu, and that's a fact that does not even need discussion, unless you could start a discussion for every specific film and prove its language is Urdu (in this case, it's Piya Ka Ghar, and if you see its certificate, it says HINDI). You can go and report this and do whatever you want, I did nothing wrong as I did NOT remove the Urdu script, trust me, I'll know what to say and whom to call. EOD. war

I wrote a message here under the title of Thathaal, and wanted some feedback from Anupam. Because he is from Indian subcontinent, moreover he is supposed to have something to do with the history. I wanted him to comment in the discussion about Thathaal, but he seems to be busy fighting some Indian/Pakistani war here. Sorry for disturbing you guys, have fun.Jogibaba (talk) 14:56, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Anupam for the message, I think there has been some misunderstanding. The article Thathaal is not my creation, on the contrary, I have objection to that article. I have written my objections in the "Discussion" area. I believe, that article is just a crap, needs an excessive editing. Can you please read that article, and give your comments in the discussion area.Jogibaba (talk) 23:14, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. In March you added a citation to a book from the "Webster's Quotations" series published by Icon Group International to this article. Unfortunately, Icon Group International is not a reliable source - their books are computer-generated, with most of the text copied from Wikipedia (most entries have [WP] by them to indicate this). I'm removing a lot of similar references; many other editors have also been deceived by these sources. Another publisher that reuses Wikipedia articles is Alphascript Publishing. Also Clara Germana Cele, where I also removed two self-published books. See WP:SPS for why we cannot use self-published sources. iUniverse and Lulu.com are self-publishing houses, not genuine book publishers. Fences&Windows 01:04, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Khalistan movement

Hi Anupam, I saw your addition to the Khalistan movement page with the gurmukhi/devnagari version of the term "Tehrik-e-Khalistan". I think you had good intentions but I reverted them because I've never seen the movement referred to as such, and it sounds a bit too Islamic (like Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, for instance. it might bring certain connotations. it seems more like a Persian/Urdu phrase than anything). If you can find a more popular neutral Punjabi term for it used by those in the movement or any sort of news media, I'd suggest that. (perhaps Tehrik-e-Khalistan can be seen as neutral, but there ought to be more-often-used names than that.)

But if you can find a source for "Tehrik-e-Khalistan," feel free to readd it, I suppose.3swordz (talk) 11:24, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Robbie Mannheim if you please

Anupam, you must step back a bit from your attempt to dominate the Robbie Mannheim page. We all agree your work has been much, but you now need to start listening to the concensus we have been reaching over there.

You have no right to stick in just anything you see fit! YOU must also consult with us about what goes in and how to restructure the article. It isn't your sole possession, it matters to us as well.

Your weakness is you want to put everything you read about this case into the article. That is not necessary for it to be appropriately encyclopedic.

You want to push the Christian aspect too far. Yes it matters to the case, but the line you insist on reverting is offensive to Spiritualists and is unnecessary, like so much of what you want done over there.

You are not clarifying the unverified claims and stories in that article as separate from the little fact that exists. The FACT is the Church acknowledges an exorcism, says it was a teen boy around 1949, Father Halloran has added some recollections and that is ALL. Everything else is unverified anecdotal reporting...the OPPOSITE of established fact.

You need to understand this work is not yours alone just because you are a reviewer. You have to cooperate like any other editor and work better. Instead you are polite, vry calm, but you still do only what you want to do at that page. We are not going to tolerate this stubbornness.76.195.82.134 (talk) 12:33, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
