The city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada has over 180 neighbourhoods. In this list, neighbourhoods indicated with ARP have an Area redevelopment plan in place.[1]

Map of Calgary

City Centre

Downtown

Downtown Calgary strictly speaking is bordered by 10th Street W. on the west, 3rd Avenue S. and Eau Claire and Bow River on the north, the Elbow River on the east and the CPR mainline tracks on the south.

Official neighbourhoods:

Unofficial districts within the Downtown Commercial Core[2]:

Other

These are not officially called downtown, but they are sometimes thought of as such (less so for the Beltline).

  • Beltline - Physically separated from downtown proper by heavy rail train tracks, forming a distinct community. It is made up of what was formerly known as Connaught on the west and Victoria Park on the east side.
  • Chinatown - No obvious boundary or barrier separates it from downtown proper. Widely thought of as part of downtown. It is a culturally and visibly distinct community. (ARP)
  • Eau Claire - No obvious boundary or barrier separates it from downtown proper. It is widely thought of as part of downtown and is the least distinct from downtown of the three.

Inner City

The inner city includes Downtown Calgary and the adjoining communities, and overlays roughly the city limits before 1961. It is delimited by Sarcee Trail to the west; Glenmore Reservoir and Glenmore Trail to the south; Bow River and Deerfoot Trail to the east; and Bow River and 32 Avenue to the north.[3]

The inner city includes the following neighbourhoods (by city quadrant):

Quadrants

Calgary is divided into four quadrants.

In general, Northwest Calgary is the region West of Centre Street and North of the Bow River with the exception of several neighbourhoods South of the Bow River on the western edge of the city which are also considered to be part of the Northwest.

Northeast Calgary is the region east of Centre Street and North of Memorial Drive.

Southwest Calgary is, in general, the region South of the Bow River and West of Centre Street/Macleod Trail.

Southeast Calgary is the area South of Memorial Drive and East of Macleod Trail.

Business revitalization zones

The Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) program was established in 1983 to allow certain commercial areas of the city to administer and promote themselves internally. Many of the zones (or districts) that emerged from this have since acquired a virtual "neighbourhood" status by the people of Calgary. Most zones now offer a unique street shopping environment (many have restaurants and nightlife too) and have become popular destinations for both Calgarians and visitors to the city. None of these zones are officially designated as neighbourhoods unto themselves however. The City of Edmonton also uses BRZs, and other cities have equivalent systems such as Business improvement districts.

Industrial Areas

Most industrial areas are located between Deerfoot Trail and 36 Street E in the northern half of the city; between Macleod Trail, Deerfoot Trail and Glenmore Trail in the south and east of Barlow Trail in the south-east.

The following industrial and commercial areas are established in Calgary: Alyth/Bonny Brook · Burns Industrial · Calgary International Airport · Deerfoot Business Centre (commercial) · Eastfield · Foothills · Forest Lawn Industrial · Franklin · Fairview Industrial · Glendeer Business Park · Great Plains · Greenview Industrial Park · Golden Triangle · Harvest Hills Business Park · Highfield · Horizon · McCall · Meridian · Mayland · Manchester Industrial · North Airways · Ogden Shops · Pegasus · South Airways · Shepard Industrial · Skyline · Saddle Ridge Industrial · Starfield · Sunridge (commercial) · Valleyfield · Westwinds.
