The Voice is an international reality television singing competition franchise of Dutch origin. It is based on the reality singing competition The Voice of Holland, which was originally created by Dutch television producer John de Mol. Many other countries have adapted the format and begun airing their own versions since 2010. It has become a rival to the Idols franchise, Rising Star and The X Factor.

History

John de Mol, creator of Big Brother, first created The Voice concept with Dutch singer Roel van Velzen. Erland Galjaard, a Dutch program director, asked John de Mol about whether he could come up with a format that went a step further than The X Factor. De Mol then came up with the idea of Blind Audition. He wanted to focus on singing quality alone, so the coaches must be top artists in the music industry. The rotating chairs concept was invented by Roel van Velzen. It would also be the first talent show in which social media was actively involved.[1]

On 17 September 2010, The Voice of Holland began to air on RTL 4 with Angela Groothuizen, Roel van Velzen, Nick & Simon, and Jeroen van der Boom as the mentor-judges (dubbed as "coaches") of the show.[2] The show proved to be an instant success in the Netherlands.[3][4]

The format was later sold to different countries, in many cases replacing a previous Endemol music contest format, Operation Triumph / Star Academy.

Original format

The show's format features five stages of competition: producers' auditions, blind auditions, battle rounds, knockouts (since 2012), and live performance shows.

Blind auditions

Contestants are aspiring singers drawn from public auditions, which are not broadcast. Unlike Idols and The X Factor, the producers pick fewer contestants (usually from 100, up to 200 contestants), which are deemed "the best artists", to perform in the broadcast auditions.[1] The first televised stage is the blind auditions, in which the four coaches, all noteworthy recording artists, listen to the contestants in chairs facing away from the stage so as to avoid seeing them. If a coach likes what they hear from that contestant, they press a button to rotate their chairs to signify that they are interested in working with that contestant. If more than one coach presses their button, the contestant chooses the coach he or she wants to work with. The blind auditions end when each coach has a set number of contestants to work with. Coaches will dedicate themselves to developing their singers mentally, musically and in some cases physically, giving them advice, and sharing the secrets of their success.

Battles

The contestants who successfully pass the blind auditions proceed to the battle rounds, where the coaches put two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together in front of a studio audience. After the vocal face-off, the coach must choose only one to advance. If no specific winner can be identified the competition turns to a game of fate via a coin toss. In some versions, there are steals where opposing coaches can steal a contestant who was voted off by their own coach by pressing their button. As in the blind auditions, if more than one coach presses their button, the contestant chooses which coach they want. Each coach has a set number of steals, usually one or two (raised to three in the seventh season of The Voice Brasil).

Knockouts

The knockout round was introduced in 2012, and is implemented in some versions. The winners of the battle rounds proceed to this rounds (dubbed Super-battle round/Sing-off in some versions).

As in the battle rounds, coaches put members (usually 2/3/4, rarely 6 or 10) of their own team members to compete against each other. This time, the contestants choose their own song to perform individually while the other watches and waits. After that, the coach chooses one to advance while the other is sent home. At the end of the knockout rounds, the strongest members of each coach's roster proceed to the live stage shows. Some versions include steals. Like in the battle round, the opposing coaches can steal a contestant who was voted off by their own coach by pressing their button. Similar to the blind auditions, if more than one coach presses their button, the contestant chooses which coach they want.

Live shows

In the final performance phase of the competition, the top contestants from each team compete against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience vote to save one contestant on each team, leaving the coach to decide on live television who they want to save and who will not move on. In the next round, the public chooses between the two artists left on each team, and the coach also has a vote that weighs equally with the public vote.

Finally, each coach will have his/her best contestant left standing to compete in the finals, singing an original song. From these four, one will be named "The Voice"—and will receive the grand prize of a recording contract. Universal Music Group is the general record company associated and affiliated with The Voice format in most countries.

Social media participation

One of the cornerstones of The Voice format is the social media participation via Twitter, Facebook and the especially designed platform "connect." Users are able to log in via their Facebook account and retrieve background information about the show. The platform also offers the possibility to stream the show online as well as to vote, interact with friends and to discuss various topics and questions asked by the producers throughout the show.[5]

Format variations

DISCLAIMER : All variations below and its descriptions are based on the observation and research in every single YouTube channel, Wikipedia article, local news feed, and social media of each versions.

Coaches' line-up

In various franchises, a duo coach—two coaches and two chairs but only one team to represent, one table and one button to press—is placed in the coaches' panel—a difference from the usual four individual coaches line-up. It was first introduced in the first season of The Voice of Holland with Nick & Simon as the first duo coach. The same variation is also used in seen in various The Voice Kids format.

Another variation was introduced in The Voice Kids. The same format usually have three individuals in the line-up of coaches. However, a variation was introduced in the second season of the O Ses Türkiye — the Turkish version of the format — wherein the said show included four individual coaches, but then was dropped in the later seasons. However, this was adopted in the second season of the Indian-Hindustani version, the seventh season of the Dutch version, the fourth season of the Belgian Flemish version (where they also introduced, for the first time in the worldwide franchise, a "TRIO" coach, K3), the fourth season of the French version, the seventh season of German Version, and so on.

Starting from the sixth season of the Vietnamese kids version, the panel has 6 coaches divided into 3 duo coaches, which was the first in the history of The Voice Kids to have more than one duo-coach seen in various The Voice Kids format.[6]

The ninth season of The Voice of Finland featured 5 individual coaches instead of the usual 4.

Another variation was in the third season of Sing! China, which introduced an all-male coaching panel for the first time of the franchise. The fourth season of Giọng hát Việt introduced 3 female coaches and 1 male coach for the first time in history. The format was then applied to the first Teen Philippine version.

Contestants

Originally, The Voice only allowed solo artists and groups with two members, not trios/quartets. The first case of a trio entering was in the first season of The Voice van Vlaanderen. In the second episode, the Vinken Sisters participated and three coaches turned. They commented that trios were not allowed for participation and that there was a chance that the group had to drop a member[citation needed]. However, the trio remained in the competition without dropping members. Many versions of The Voice stuck with the original rule of only allowing solo artists and duos. Some other versions[citation needed] currently will not allow for trios/quartets to participate. However, the limit of two people per group was ultimately lifted in The Voice of Holland. In the fifth season of the Dutch version, girl group O'G3NE was the first trio that entered and ultimately won the show. After that, a few versions[citation needed] started to allow groups with more than two members. Trios/quartets have been seen entering the second season (3nty Brothers (trio)), the fifth season (Arcadian (trio)), the sixth season (The Sugazz and Incantessimú (both were trio)), and the seventh season, (JAT (trio)), all in The Voice: la plus belle voix, then the second season of The Voice Indonesia (Mervo (quartet)), the fifth season (Trinity (trio)) and the sixth season (Viva (trio)) of Glasat na Bulgaria, the eighth season of Holos Krainy (Nude Voices (trio) and Akord (quartet)), the seventh season of the Australian version (Homegrown (trio)), the eighth season of The Voice of Germany (Misses Melaza (trio)), the eighth season of The Voice UK (Remember Monday (trio)), the seventh season of La Voz... Mexico (BAE (quartet)), the sixteenth season of the U.S. version (The Bundys (trio)), the sixth version of The Voice Kids France (Mini div (trio), the sixth season of The Voice of Vietnam (Dominix (quartet), S2 (quartet), INNO (trio) and Mystery (trio)) and so on.

The Voice were not allowing bands to compete in the show. In few versions, some had seen entering in the competition like in ninth season of The Voice of Holland with Navarone and Luminize. It was also applied in the eighth season of The Voice Thailand with Error99.

A different rule was applied in the blind auditions in the Malaysian and Singaporean version of The Voice, wherein if contestants auditioning as duo had received only one-chair turn, the coach who turned for them must decide either dropping a member or advancing both of them.

Blind Audition Twists

Starting from the fifth season of The Voice of Holland,[7] if all the coaches rejected one specific contestant, the losing contestant would leave the stage straight away, without any conversations with the coaches, and the chairs would remain unturned. The format is currently used in some versions, most notably, the U.K. version. It was used in the fifth season of the Vocea României,[8] the fourth to sixth season of The Voice Belgique and in the sixth season of The Voice of Albania, but then was abandoned in later seasons (However, later, Vocea României brought it back on its eighth season) .

The U.S. version introduced a new mechanism in the blind auditions on the fourteenth season, the Block button. When a coach wants to get the specific contestant but does not want another coach to do so, he/she may press the block button to block them from getting the contestant, and then turn around at the same time. The coach who is blocked, will not know until he/she presses the main button, and after that he/she will get the word stating that he/she is blocked, instead of his/her name in the LED floor. A coach can use the block button once in a season (this number of allowed block, varies in other versions, which are described below), and only one block is allowed per audition. The Block twist was then applied in :

The sixth season of The Voice Kids of Vietnam had a new feature called The Mute button. As its name implies, the muted coach will not be allowed to speak, but they can still do all the kind of body language to convince the contestant to join their team. However, the Mute only adds excitement to the program, as contestant can still pick the muted team. Each coach has only one Mute per audition.[29]. The slight change happened in the fourth season of Sing! China wherein the coach that was being muted will or will not make the chair turn but will still be able to be selected by contestant.

The Wildcard round was introduced in the first two seasons of The Voice of Holland, wherein the selected failed contestants of the blind auditions were screened and would perform via radio program Radio 538. Some coaches will select if they want that contestant on their team to compete in the battles, but it was abandoned in the later seasons. It was reintroduced in the 15th season of the U.S. version where it is now called as "The Comeback Stage". On it, a fifth coach will mentor six contestants that failed to make a team in the blind auditions, and they will compete against each other in a digital companion series, with the winner securing a spot in the Top 13.[30]

The sixth season of Giọng hát Việt introduced The Switch. If a coach has already filled his/her team but interest in a contestant later, he/she can press the Switch button to swap that contestant with one of the chosen artists before. Each coach only has one Switch during the course of the Blind auditions. The Special coach was also introduced this season, a role that shares similarities with the U.S. version's Comeback Stage coach. Instead of turning away from the stage as usual, the special coach's chair stay towards the stage during all performances, allowing him/her to know how the contestants look like, he/she has the ability to choose unlimited contestants, unlike other coaches, and his/her selection button is still valid even when the contestant has finished his/her performance. However, the special coach can only select contestant that were not chosen by three other coaches.

In the sixth season of The Voice of Italy, not all contestants selected during the Blind Auditions proceeded to the next round. Instead, an off-stage a cappella singing test was instated, and the coaches can only pick their "Best six" to advance to the next round.

The seventh season of The Voice Kids of Vietnam introduced new rules called the Breaking The Block and The Frozen. The contestant can protect the blocked coach and still pick that team but the blocked coach would be fall into The Frozen state in the next performance and would not be able to press the button in that performance. Each coach has only gained the Breaking The Block one time per audition.

In the fourth season of the Philippine Kids version and the fourth season of Sing! China, each coach has the power to decide their team sizes instead of having team limits as usual.

Battles Twists

The seventh season of The Voice of Holland features non stop steal, which means that steals during the battle rounds follow a hot-seat procedure: a coach may replace his or her stolen contestant as many times as he or she likes until the end of the battles. This feature also applies in the seventh season of The Voice of Poland, the seventh season of Vocea României, fifth season of The Voice van Vlaanderen,[31] the fifth season of The Voice Portugal, the sixth season of The Voice: la plus belle voix and the fourth season of The Voice Ahla Sawt.

The second season of The Voice Kids of Vietnam introduced the Save button that allowed a coach to keep a contestant they just eliminated from the competition. Contestants who won their battles or saved by their coaches will advance to the Playoffs. Each coach has only one Save in entire battles rounds. It was then applied in the third season of The Voice Indonesia, along with the steals.

Another format was introduced in the fourth season of La Voz Kids España.[32] The remaining contestants that was saved by the coaches will proceed to the fast-paced Battle Rounds wherein the supercoach will decide also who will proceed to the live semi-finals.

The fifth season of Giọng hát Việt features no-elimination, which is used only once throughout the battles when a coach does not want to eliminate one of two their contestants and wants to keep them in the next round. A coach has to ask and gets consent from both contestants. After getting consent, two contestants were retained and would become a duo (they were not a solo-contestant), combined together throughout the rest of the competition; if a coach does not get consent, they must choose only one to advance to the knockouts as the original format.[33]

The Block Button was inserted in the seventh season battles of The Voice Brasil.

The Danger Zone was added in The sixth season of Giọng hát Việt where battle losers are sent to. Each coach can only save one artist from their teams in the Danger Zone at the end of the Battle round and can steal only one artist from another team who are sent to the Danger Zone.

For the first time in the history of The Voice Kids, on the fifth season of Vietnamese version, steals were implemented as seen on the various formats of The Voice. It was also seen on the fifth season of the German version and to the fourth season of Philippine version.

Knockouts Twists

Some versions feature a different version of the Knockout round: the hot-seat or chair challenge method (first introduced in the sixth season of The Voice of Holland), a format similar to The X Factor's six-chair challenge, there will be three seats (the number of seats varies sometimes). After the first 3 contestants perform a song of his or her choice, they will all sit in the three chairs. However, after these contestants perform, the fate of the fourth contestant will be decided based on whether his or her coach would like to switch out a contestant already seated in favor of this performed contestant. In the case of a switch-out, the contestant that was switched out will be eliminated, and this performer will sit down. If the coach would instead like to keep the contestants already seated and thus not give a seat to this performed contestant, he/she will be immediately eliminated. After all contestants have performed, those who end up seated will advance to the Live Shows. Most versions do not feature "Steal" buttons when using this method. In a few versions, the seats are ranked, and the coach decide which performed contestant will sit on which ranked seat. After all seats are occupied, when the coach want to do switch-out for the next performed contestant, the contestant on the last ranked seat will absolutely be switched out and be eliminated, regardless of which ranked seat will this performed contestant sit.

Normally, The Voice have Knockout round come after Battle round. However, the sixth season of Australian version have the rounds swapped (Knockout round come before Battle round). It is followed in the fifth season of Lietuvos Balsas, the sixth season of The Voice Brasil, the sixth season of The Voice Thailand, the seventh season of The Voice: la plus belle voix (Knockouts dubbed as "Audition Finale"), the fifth season of The Voice of Italy, the third season of The Voice Indonesia, the sixth season of La Voz España (Battles dubbed as "Batalla Final"), and the third season of The Voice South Africa. However, later, The Voice Brasil dropped this twist on its seventh season.

In the fourteenth season of U.S. version, the "Steal" button can act as a new twist in the knockouts called "Save" wherein a coach can save a contestant that is eliminated from their team.

The non-live Cross-battle was applied in the Knockout round of the fifth season of Giọng hát Việt, which featured battles between members from different teams. The result of a Knockout battle is determined 50% by the point given by a professional jury and 50% by audiences' vote at the studio. Each coach has three turns to "challenge" another coach by sending an act from their team into a battle, while the other act from the challenged team is selected randomly. As a result, the number of contestants advancing to the Playoffs is uneven among four teams. In season 6, no professional jury is featured and the result is decided solely by the public's vote; and a contestant can be saved by the special coach. The format was then applied in the seventh season of the Vietnamese kids version, which is the first time in the history of The Voice Kids to feature the Cross-battle.

The third season of The Voice South Africa introduced a new way to conduct the Knockout round: After each contestant's solo performance, the respective coach will have to decide whether they are in the Safe Zone (which means qualified for the Battles) or the Danger Zone (at risk of elimination). Each coach can only send three contestants to the Safe Zone but also have two steals across the round. After all members from one team have concluded their performances, the coach will save a number of artists from the Danger Zone to move on to the Battles. Contestants who are sent to the Danger Zone but not chosen by their coach or get stolen by another coach will be eliminated. However, audience can also vote for the artist in the Danger Zone by televoting.[34] This rule was then applied in the eighth season of The Voice: la plus belle voix, where six artists will be chosen for the Safe Zone, but public's vote is not included.

The eighth season of The Voice UK conducted a new voting system called Lifeline vote, which would advance one contestant from eliminated acts in the Knockouts based on the public's vote into the Live round.

Live Shows Twists

In some versions, all contestants perform each week and only the public's vote determines which contestants advance in the competition individually, not for each team, a format similar to both Idols and The X Factor, due to the possibility of having multiple potential winners on the same team. This means that any contestant can be eliminated and no coach is guaranteed a spot in the finals. Along with this elimination method, there is an Instant Save in certain versions, most notably the US version, Israeli version, and Australian version, where contestants (usually two or three) who are in danger of elimination have to perform again and another vote is conducted to save one of those contestants.

Some versions of The Voice applied a new rule called Wildcard, which will give one previously eliminated contestant a second chance to advance to the finals based on the public's vote on a distinct portal. The third season of the Australian Version was the first to conduct a Wildcard round to give one eliminated artist in the semi-final a fifth spot in the grand finale. The Wildcard was then applied in seventh season of the U.S. version, where nine artists who was previously eliminated from the season's top 12 performed in the semifinals' result show for a fourth spot in the finale, but it was abandoned in later seasons. The Wildcard was also implemented in Giọng hát Việt (season 4 onward), the Vietnamese Kids version (season 4 onward) and the fifth season of The Voice of Greece. The seventh season of the Australian version brought back the Wildcard, but at that season four eliminated contestants from four teams in the Knockouts were chosen to be Wildcards by his/her coach (by pressing the red button), and only one Wildcard achieved the most vote from the public was brought back to compete in the live shows with the top 12. The sixth season of The Voice Portugal applied the Wildcard in its Semi-final in favor of a fifth finalist.

The Cross-battle was introduced in the Semi-final round of the fourth season of The Voice of Holland.[35] In this round, two contestants from two different team compete each other and the public vote determines who will advance. The rules was then applied from the third season of O Ses Türkiye onward, but was used at all live shows instead of just one round. The Cross-battles returned in the fifth season of the Dutch version, but later dropped in the succeeding seasons. The Cross-battles was also used in the fourth season of The Voice Of China, the fifth, sixth and seventh seasons of The Voice Brasil, the fifth and sixth seasons of the Vocea României, the third, fourth and fifth seasons of The Voice of Greece, from the third to the fourth season of The Voice of Germany, the seventh season of The Voice Thailand, and in the sixteenth season of the U.S. version.[36] The seventh season of The Voice Brasil intended to feature an instant save vote, to save one of the losing contestants in the Cross-battle,[10] but that twist was abandoned before the phase begins. The U.S. version's Cross-battle, on the other hand, features Save/Steal button, which has similar mechanism as in Knockout rounds.

The Remix round, introduced in the fifth season of The Voice Brasil, is a way to balance the teams after the Cross-battle. On it, coaches will again attend the performance of the contestants at the end, and each of them will press the red button to choose who will move to the next phase, just like in the Blind Auditions. Contestants who have more than one button pressed will be able to decide which team they want to stay in. Coaches may use a wildcard, which guarantees Supreme Power at the time of choice. If more than one of them presents the card, the priority will always be the team's original coach. After all the performances, each coach can save one of the not chosen acts, and move them to its team. At the end of Remix each coach will have four, three or two contestants (depending on the season) for the following phase. In the seventh season of the same version, there is a fast pass, where each coach can ensure that one of its contestants stays on its team for the next round.

The third season of The Voice of Holland implemented a new system in the live shows, Scoring. During each contestant's performance, the coaches' chairs turned their backs to the stage and turned around after the contestant completed his/her performance just like in the blind auditions. Every coach can give the score up to ten, as well as the viewers. Then the coaches' score and viewers' score each will be averaged, combined, ultimately giving the score to the contestant at the end of performance, which will determine the fate of the contestant. If a coach press his/her button to turn their chairs around like in the blind auditions during a contestant's performance, the score given to that contestant is automatically 10/10. This system is usually used until the semi-final. It was discontinued from season 4 to season 6, but was reinstalled starting from the seventh season, when the coaches directly witness and score the contestants' performances.

As mentioned in the section "Blind Audition Twists" above, the 15th season of the U.S. version feature a new round called "The Comeback Stage". On it, a fifth coach will mentor six contestants that failed to make a team in the blind auditions, and they will compete against each other in a digital companion series, with the winner securing a spot in the Top 13.[30]

From the fifth season of Giọng Hát Việt Nhí, in a round of the Playoffs, all teams had to set up a minishow which consists of performances from all team members and concludes with a group performance of the coaches and the contestants. From the sixth season, the team receiving the most public vote will be declared safe and have all team members advance to the next round, while the two other coaches must eliminate a number of contestants from their teams.

Stage Design

The appearance of coaches names on the floor (after pressing the buttons in the blind auditions) was first introduced in the eleventh season of the U.S. version and ongoing until the present. The design was adopted in the following versions:

The Voice around the world

A combined 408 singers have won the television series The Voice, The Voice Kids, The Voice Teens and The Voice Senior; a reality singing competition adapted in 145 countries/regions. Each winner is given a recording contract, a monetary prize, and a title as that nation's The Voice, La Voz, Golos, Holos, La Voix ....
