January
- January 1 – Four members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters were killed and four others were wounded in a clash with government soldiers that lasted 10 hours in Datu Salibo, Maguindanao.[2]
- January 4:
- Emilyn Villanueva, the 15-year-old girl who fell into comatose after she was hit in the head by a suspected stray bullet in a shooting incident on the New Year's Eve in Malabon, died of cardiac arrest at 6:10 pm.[3]
- About a hundred armed men, whose affiliation is undetermined, launched an attack on a prison in Kidapawan which had freed at least 158 inmates. The jailbreak resulting from the attack was reportedly the biggest in the history of North Cotabato.[4]
- January 5 – Mohammad Jaafar Maguid, the leader of the Ansar Al-Khilafah Philippines who is allegedly affiliated with the Islamic State, was killed by government security forces in Sarangani.[5]
- January 11:
- President Duterte signed an executive order mandating universal access to modern family planning tools.[6]
- President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the unwarranted arrest and deportation of Indian nationals, especially Punjabis, involved in the 5-6 money lending scheme.[7]
- January 16–20 – The 4th World Apostolic Congress on Mercy commenced with a Mass at the Manila Cathedral. Other events were held in Manila, Batangas, Bulacan, and Bataan.[8][9]
- January 17:
- The city government of Cagayan de Oro declared a state of calamity in response to flooding caused by heavy rainfall brought by a low pressure area in the vicinity of Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay and the tail-end of a cold front.[10]
- The National Bureau of Investigation confirmed the death of Jee Ick Joo, a South Korean businessman who was abducted in Angeles on October 18, 2016.[11]
- January 30 – Rodrigo Duterte ordered the cleansing of the Philippine National Police (PNP) after corruption was discovered at the wake of the kidnapping of the South Korean, Jee Ick-Joo.[12]
February
- February 1 – The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), New People's Army (NPA), and National Democratic Front (NDF) ended their unilateral ceasefire with the Philippine government.[13]
- February 10 – A 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit Surigao del Norte, killing at least 4 people.[14]
- February 14:
- The Philippine National Police declared a "war on illegal gambling", following the withdrawal of the police on the War on Drugs.[15]
- Department of Environment and Natural Resources secretary Gina Lopez ordered the closure of 75 mines for violations of environmental laws.[16]
- February 21 – A tour bus carrying college students bound for a camping site in Tanay, Rizal, lost brakes and crashed into a roadside electricity pole, killing 15 and injuring 40 on board.[17] The accident uncovered lax regulations on safety of students on educational trips in the Philippines and prompted the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Department of Education (DepEd) to issue moratoriums on field trips for the 2016–17 school year.[18]
- February 24 – Senator Leila de Lima was arrested for violations of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, related to her alleged involvement in the New Bilibid Prison drug trafficking scandal.[19][20]
- February 27 – Jeepney drivers, mostly belonging to the transport groups, PISTON and Stop and Go Coalition, led a nationwide strike against the planned modernization of jeepneys, that caused suspension of classes and stranding passengers at major metropolitan areas nationwide.[21]
- February 28 – President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.[22][23]
March
- March 1 – After a temporary suspension due to the kidnapping and killing of a South Korean national, Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte orders the Philippine National Police to resume his controversial campaign.[24]
- March 2 – Angel Manalo, brother of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo, and 31 others were arrested for illegal possession of firearms for the alleged shooting incident at Manalo's compound in Quezon City.[25]
- March 9 – Members of Kadamay (Kalipunan ng Damayan Mahihirap) occupied 4,000 houses inside government housing projects in Pandi and San Jose del Monte in Bulacan.[26]
- March 15 – Magdalo representative Gary Alejano filed the first impeachment complaint against Rodrigo Duterte resulting from extrajudicial killings in the Philippine war on drugs.[27]
April
- April 4:
- Rodrigo Duterte ordered the resignation of Department of Interior and Local Government secretary Ismael Sueño amidst corruption allegations.[28]
- A magnitude 5.5 earthquake, that occurred northwest of Tingloy, hit Batangas, causing damage to buildings.[29] The province soon declared a state of calamity after the quake.[30]
- April 11 – A clash between the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police-Special Action Force and Abu Sayyaf in Inabanga, Bohol kills 6, including the notorious Muammar Askali, also known as "Abu Rami".[31]
- April 18 – A bus traveling from Isabela into Ilocos region fell off a ravine in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija, killing 31 on board. The accident, resulting from poor vehicle maintenance, is one of the most deadliest road accidents in the Philippines.[32]
- April 26–29 – The 30th ASEAN Summit was held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay.[33]
- April 27 – The Philippine National Police discovered a secret jail cell inside a Manila Police District precinct, that raised possibilities of police abuses in Rodrigo Duterte's campaign against illegal drugs.[34]
- April 28 – 14 people were injured after a homemade pipe bomb exploded in Quiapo, Manila.[35]
May
- May 5 – United Nations special rapporteur Agnes Callamard made a controversial visit on a drug policy forum in the University of the Philippines. The Philippine government complained about her unannounced visit, that shown lack of understanding on the human rights situation in Rodrigo Duterte's ongoing war on drugs.[36]
- May 6 – Two persons were killed and six others, including two policemen, were injured in two explosions in Quiapo, Manila.[37]
- May 15 – The majority of the House of Representatives justice committee rejected the impeachment complaint filed by Magdalo representative Gary Alejano against Rodrigo Duterte for lack of substance.[38]
- May 16:
- President Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order No. 25, that renamed Benham Rise to Philippine Rise.[39]
- President Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order No. 26, that ordered a nationwide smoking ban.[40]
- May 18:
- Implementation of Republic Act No. 10913, or the "Anti-Distracted Driving Act", started.[41]
- Ferdinand Marcelino, along with his Chinese asset, Yan Yi Shou, were released after their drug-related case was dropped.[42]
- May 19 – Implementation of Republic Act No. 10666, or the "Children on Motorcycle Safety Act of 2015", started.[43]
- May 23 – President Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation No. 216 declaring a 60-day martial law in Mindanao following clashes between government forces and the Maute group in Marawi.[44]
June
- June 1 – Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana announces the deaths of ten soldiers in Marawi as a result of a "friendly fire" airstrike.[45]
- June 2 – A gunman attacked Resorts World Manila in Pasay around midnight, caused a major panic within the complex. Around 38 people were dead, due to smoke inhalation from the fire while injuring 70 people.[46]
- June 4:
- In Marawi, Philippines, a ceasefire organised by Moro separatists is broken, leaving locals hungry for nearly two weeks.[47]
- Philippine police identified the attacker at Resorts World Manila as Jessie Javier Carlos, an ex-employee of the Department of Finance who was deeply in debt.[48][49]
July
- July 5 – The Supreme Court had ruled in favor of the constitutionality of Proclamation No. 216 which declared Martial Law and suspended the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in the whole of Mindanao, in response to the Marawi crisis.[50]
- July 6 – A 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit Leyte, causing at least 4 deaths and 100 injuries. The quake also caused power interruptions in the whole of Eastern Visayas and nearby Bohol.[51]
- July 22 – In a special joint session requested by President Rodrigo Duterte, the Congress of the Philippines voted 261–18 to extend the martial law in Mindanao until December 31, 2017.[52][53][54]
- July 23 – The nationwide ban on public smoking is implemented.[55][56]
- July 24 – President Rodrigo Duterte delivers his seconds State of the Nation Address (SONA).[57][58]
- July 30 – Sixteen people, including Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. and his wife, are killed in a police drug raid in Ozamiz, Misamis Occidental. The Parojinog family had been previously identified with their ties to the illegal drug trade, as well as the organized crime group Kuratong Baleleng.[59][60]
August
- August 4 – President Rodrigo Duterte signs Republic Act No. 10931, that providing free education for over a million students in public tertiary and vocational schools nationwide.[61]
- August 8 – The Supreme Court of the Philippines has junked all petitions against the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, re-affirming its earlier ruling on November 8, 2016.[62]
- August 9 – President Rodrigo Duterte abolishes the Negros Island Region (first created in 2015 by his predecessor) through Executive Order No. 38, citing lack of funds to fully establish the region. Negros Occidental reverts back to the Western Visayas region, Negros Oriental back to the Central Visayas region.[63][64]
- August 11 – The Department of Agriculture confirms an avian influenza outbreak in the province of Pampanga.[65][66][67]
- August 16 – 17-year-old Kian Loyd delos Santos was fatally shot by police officers while conducting an anti-drug operation in Caloocan, Metro Manila. The case became controversial when the official police reports differed from witness accounts and CCTV footage.[68][69][70] This would cause a thousands of marchers to protest in EDSA heeding calls from the Philippine Catholic Church to criticize the drug war[71] and the Senate to investigate the killing.[72] Hundreds attend the funeral procession of delos Santos on August 26.[73]
- August 20 – The Court of Appeals of the Philippines has junked U.S. Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton's motion for reconsideration, re-affirming its decision last April upholding the 2015 homicide ruling of the Olongapo City Regional Trial Court; citing the defendant's arguments as mere "rehash of issues". The Court of Appeals also upheld the payment of ₱ 4.32 million to Jennifer Laude's family for "loss of earning capacity". Pemberton faces 10 years in prison.[74]
- August 31:
- 41 members of Kadamay were arrested after they staged a protest against an impending demolition in the Manggahan Floodway in Pasig City.[75]
- Former Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director General Lilia de Lima and the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) were among this year's recipients of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards.[76][77]
September
- September 7 – The Senate investigates Paolo Duterte, the son of current Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, and Atty. Manases "Mans" Carpio, the wife of current Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, in an alleged methamphetamine smuggling scandal.[78][79]
- September 12 – The House of Representatives of the Philippines approves a bill that limits the budget of the Commission on Human Rights to only ₱1,000 (US$20).[80][81]
- September 14 – The Communist-aligned Makabayan bloc leaves the majority of the Philippine lower House over disagreements due to the ongoing drug crackdown.[82]
- September 15:
- The Sandiganbayan has granted the bail petition of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, one of the three senators facing graft and plunder charges in connection with the alleged pork barrel scam.[83]
- Around 1,200 members of the Philippine National Police in the suburb of Caloocan are fired over allegations of crimes attributed to the police.[84]
- September 16 – Father Chito Suganob, who had been held by the ISIS-Maute group since the crisis broke out in Marawi City on May 23, was one of the hostages along with a teacher of Dansalan College, who were rescued by the military.[85]
- September 17 – Horacio Castillo III, a first-year law student of the University of Santo Tomas, has died from injuries that he sustained in fraternity hazing initiation rites of Aegis Juris Fraternity.[86]
- September 21 – Coinciding with the 45th anniversary of the declaration of martial law in 1972 by the late President and dictator Ferdinand Marcos, nationwide protests — also known as "National Day of Protest" — are conducted by various groups against the government's implementation of war on drugs and the ongoing martial law in the whole of Mindanao under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.[87]
October
- October 2 – President Rodrigo Duterte signs Republic Act No. 10952, that resets the barangay and SK elections to the second Monday of May 2018 (May 14).[88]
- October 4 – President Rodrigo Duterte signs Executive Order No. 43, that creating the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission.[89]
- October 11 – The House of Representatives votes (137–75) to impeach COMELEC Chairman Andres Bautista, who them resigned from office on October 23.[90]
- October 16–17 – Armed group leaders, Isnilon Hapilon of Abu Sayyaf and Omar Maute of Maute Group, leaders of ISIL-linked militants fighting the government in the Battle of Marawi were reportedly killed on October 16 during the operation of rescuing the hostages, according to the statement released by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.[91][92][93] The following day President Rodrigo Duterte declared the liberation of Marawi.[94][95][96] While the armed forces says this meant that the conflict is substantially it pointed out that there are still skirmishes.[97]
- October 23 – The Battle of Marawi was declared officially over by the military.[98][99][100]
- October 25 – President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Lt. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero as the new Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff.[101]
- October 31 – Baguio, the Philippines' summer capital has been hailed as a "creative city" by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for its distinguished crafts and folk art.[102]
November
- November 5 – Dubbed as Lord, Heal Our Land, led by Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, about thousands of mourners of extrajudicial killing victims attend a mass held in EDSA Shrine.[103][104]
- November 8 – The Office of the Ombudsman files graft and usurpation of authority charges against former President Benigno Aquino III in connection with the 2015 Mamasapano massacre that killed 44 elite policemen.[105]
- November 10–15 – The 31st ASEAN Summit was held for the second time at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay.[33]
- November 13–14 – The Twelfth East Asia Summit was also held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay.[106]
- November 14 – Angeline Fernando, a 24-year old woman becomes a victim who lost her right arm in an accident at the Metro Rail Transit 3's Ayala station in Makati City.[107]
- November 16 – As many as 140 passengers of the Metro Rail Transit 3 were evacuated from a "detached train" coach between the railway lines of Buendia and Ayala Avenue Stations.[108]
- November 23 – President Rodrigo Duterte signs Proclamation No. 360, that formally ends the peace negotiations with communist rebels.[109]
- November 28 – At least 14 members of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed in a running gun battle in Nasugbu, Batangas.[110]
December
- December 1 – The Department of Health (DOH) temporarily suspends a school-based dengue vaccination program after Dengvaxia vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur made a statement that its product poses higher risks to people without prior dengue infection.[111][112]
- December 5:
- George San Mateo, the leader of transport group Piston was arrested in front of the Quezon City Hall of Justice, for charges in connection to a transport strike earlier this year.[113]
- President Rodrigo Duterte signs Proclamation No. 374, that declaring the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) as a terrorist organization.[114]
- December 11 – The Senate Committee on Health and Demography begins its hearing on the Department of Health's (DOH) purchase of dengue vaccine Dengvaxia that spurred a health scare in the country.[115]
- December 13 – In a special joint session requested by President Rodrigo Duterte, the Congress of the Philippines voted 240-27 to extend the martial law in Mindanao until December 31, 2018.[116]
- December 14 – Former president Benigno Aquino III attended the hearing of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee on the dengue vaccination program that is now at the center of a health scare.[117]
- December 17 – Tropical Storm Urduja (Kai-tak), makes landfall in Eastern Samar and made more landfalls before hitting Palawan. 41 are killed during the typhoon and damages cost over ₱543.2 million (US$10.8 million).[118]
- December 19 – President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act (TRAIN) Act.[119][120]
- December 21 – A ferry sinks off the coast of Luzon in the Philippines with 251 passengers on board. At least four people are reported to have died. The toll is expected to rise, as many are still missing.[121]
- December 22 – The Philippine Coast Guard reports that 252 passengers and crew have been rescued while five people were killed when a ferry capsized Thursday east of Manila.[122]
- December 23:
- More than 200 people are dead in the southern Philippines as a result of floods and mudslides caused by Severe Tropical Storm Vinta (Tembin).[123][124]
- Thirty-seven people, mostly call centre workers, are missing and presumed dead in a fire incident inside the Davao City Mall.[125][126][127]
- December 25:
- December 28 – In Mandaluyong, law enforcers mistakenly fired at a Mitsubishi Adventure, which they thought carried suspects in a previous shooting incident, resulting in two people dead and two others injured. As a result, 10 police officers were relieved from the post.[132][133]

- August 22 – Viacom International Media Networks has announced it will no longer pursue a Nickelodeon underwater theme park and resort in Palawan, Philippines. - September 5 – Inflation accelerated to 3.1 percent in August, the fastest since April, mainly due to the higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages.[138]
- September 15 – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the toll roads operators signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on the Toll Collection Interoperability on both cash and electronic payments in Taguig City.[139]
- September 28 – President Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order No. 44, that created a bank for the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).[140]
- October 11 – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has retained the Philippines’ economic growth target at 6.6 percent for this year.[141]
- October 25 – John Gokongwei Jr, one of the country’s enduring business icons, was named as the Management Association of the Philippines’ (MAP) Man of the Year for 2017.[142]

- February 3 – The Department of Health has confirmed the 57 cases of the Zika virus in the Philippines.[143]
- April 11 – The Department of Health has recorded an all-time high of 849 new cases of HIV/AIDS last February, surpassing the 844 cases in January.[144]
- August 11 – Cases of H5N6 in poultry farms in Pampanga were detected; this was the first time the avian virus was detected in the country.[145]
- September 2 – The Department of Health has recorded a total of 57 confirmed cases of Japanese encephalitis in the country since January.[146]

- January 11 Volleyball – Michele Gumabao announces that she will part ways with the Pocari Sweat Lady Warriors, currently playing in the Philippine V-League.[148]
- January 12 Volleyball - Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas appoints Francis Vicente and Sammy Acaylar as coaches of the men's and women's volleyball team in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.[149]
- January 16 – The Philippine Sports Commission relaunches the Philippine Sports Institute in a formal ceremony held in the Philsports Arena.[150]
- January 22 Basketball – The Gilas Pilipinas management names 24 players (12 from each PBA teams, and another 12 were from Gilas Cadets) into the Philippines men's national basketball team pool for the 2017 SEABA Championship and the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.[151]
- February 19–26 – The Philippines competed in the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo and Obihiro, Japan.[152][153][154] The team consisted of 29 athletes in three sports (four disciplines) and nine officials, which represented the largest Filipino delegation at the Asian Winter Games compared to the delegations sent in previous editions the Philippines participated in.[155][156]
- March 4, Rugby union – The Philippines men's national rugby sevens team defeats Thailand 41–7 to win the Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy in Doha, Qatar.[157]
- April 21, Mixed Martial Arts – Eduard Folayang retains his ONE lightweight championship in a unanimous decision over Ev Ting at ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY fight held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.[158]

- Football – The first match of the inaugural season of the Philippines Football League, the country's first nationwide professional football league was played.[161][162]
- Volleyball – The DLSU Lady Spikers climbed out of a 2-1 deficit to defend their UAAP Women's Volleyball title, 19-25 25-14 18-25 25-18 15-10, against Ateneo Lady Eagles in Smart Araneta Coliseum.[163]
- July 2, Boxing – Dubbed as the "Battle of Brisbane", Jeff Horn kept his undefeated fight record after he had defeated Manny Pacquiao via a unanimous decision in a match held at the Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.[164]
- August 1–8, Boxing – The Philippines hosted the Asian Junior Boxing Championship, with Puerto Princesa, Palawan was named as host city.[165][166]
- August 9–17, Volleyball – Metro Manila hosted the 2017 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship.[167]
- August 19–30, Multisport – The Philippines competed at the 29th Southeast Asian Games held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Philippines finished the 29th SEA Games in 6th place with a medal haul of 24 Golds, 33 Silvers and 64 Bronze which is the country's worst finish in 18 years. The next edition of the Southeast Asian Games will be hosted by the Philippines in 2019.[168][169] [170]
- September 16, Boxing – Milan Melindo defeats Hekkie Budler to retain his International Boxing Federation (IBF) light-flyweight title via a split decision at the Waterfront Casino and Hotel in Cebu City.[171]
- October 12, Basketball – The Philippines dropped three rungs down to No. 30 but kept its solid position among the top tiers in the Asia/Oceania region in the latest world ranking released by the international basketball federation after the four continental cups.[172]
- October 13 – TV5 Network Inc. re-brands its sporting division to ESPN 5 as part of a partnership with The Walt Disney Company and Hearst Corporation, the co-owners of ESPN Inc.; the re-branding was held to coinciding with the start of the 2017 PBA Governors' Cup Finals. Prior to the TV5-ESPN partnership, the ESPN branding was formerly used by Fox Networks Group Asia before re-branded to Fox Sports Asia in 2014.[173]
