** The image of Leon Russom was a copyrighted screen shot. Images for DYK cannot be WP:FAIRUSE, and Fair Use images also cannot be used on this talk page either. As for the hook, could we say anything more about him? Soap operas are a common place for actors to begin. --JayHenry 05:15, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it after the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

• Proposed articles should:
• not be marked as stubs;
• contain more than 1,500 characters (around 1.5 kilobytes) in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables); This is a suggestion, not a firm rule; it is rather silly to oppose an article solely because it is 1490 characters in length.
• cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
• be no more than five days old (former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are acceptable).
• Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
• To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
• Suggested facts should be:
• interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
• short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters),
• neutral,
• definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
• preferably cited in the article with an inline citation.
• Suggested pictures should be:
• suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
• attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
• already in the article; and
• relevant to the article.
• formatted as and placed directly above the suggested fact.
• Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have 1,500+ character non-stub text that brings out interesting, relational, and referenced facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
• Please sign the nomination with the create/expand date and the name of the creator(s) or creator and nominator, such as:
• *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article by User; Nom by ~~~~
• *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article self-nom by ~~~~

• *...that (text)? -- Article expanded fivefold on July 19, 2007 by User and ~~~~
• Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
• If you nominate someone else's article, you can use to notify them. Usage: Thanks, ~~~~

• I couldn't verify this claim. The article says: "After the University of Tartu was reopened in 1802 but lectures were given in German only, Kristjan Jaak Peterson became the first university student to acknowledge his Estonian origin..." But the university was founded in 1632. Did all Estonian students from 1632 to 1802 pretend to be Swedish, Russian or German? Is there a reference for that hard-to-imagine situation? Art LaPella 20:41, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, exactly. Read Estonian National Awakening and references therein. Actually, it is not very hard to imagine, it is quite common for emerging small nations. Colchicum 21:00, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's not as much a case of "pretend" as "identify". Peterson was the first student known to declare his identity through his Estonian ethnicity. (It might also be interesting to know that he was born near Rīga, well outside what's currently Estonian territory.) Before him, the idea of an educated Estonian was unconceivable; less than twenty years after him, however, the Learned Estonian Society arose. Digwuren 19:17, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

• ...that the luxurious Kazanowski Palace in Warsaw, built in the 1620s, was destroyed and never rebuilt only three decades after its construction, in the 1650s? --article by User:Polaco77, nom by  Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  20:27, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The text looks as if it was generated by some machine translation service: "when prince become adolescent", "to the Western Europe", "ordered to built new palace in Italian style", "one of the most wonderful palace that ever been built", "rebuilt and enlarge the building", "a Seim select committee", "decorated with a gilded crowns", "furnishings was described", "Bacchus sitting on a barrel on weels", "ceilings filled with oil paintings, master paintings, precious furnitures, bear in a gilded cage", "the palace was succeded by his wife", "burned down by Sweds and was never restored", etc. I urge our contributors to proofread (or at least reread) their entries before submitting. --Ghirla-трёп- 14:29, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is it really that usual for people to write about experiences like an airplane crash?--Carabinieri 14:19, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Unusual, you mean? Athletes generally don't write for Sports Illustrated at all, so I think this specific case is noteworthy. Most of his obit. writers thought it was interesing enough to mention. Zagalejo 20:58, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately this article is far too short. According to the guidelines, articles should generally be more than 1500 characters (excluding lists, pictures, references, categories etc.), although a little bit of flexibility can be provided for articles just short of this mark. However, this nomination is only 433 characters excluding lists/references/categories etc. Daniel 05:46, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

• ...that Rachel Plummer wrote the first book about being a slave to the Comanche Indians, in her story of two years of captivity among them? That she earned her way up from status as a slave by nearly beating the Comanche woman charged with her supervision to death? (The Comanche, who respected courage above all things, changed her status at once, respecting her bravery) John1951 12:47, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This was the state of the article pre-Aug 30, as compared to Tower Mounted Amplifier. Thoughts, regular and more experienced DYK'ers? Daniel 23:54, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It survived deletion and it required a complete re-write, I reckon it is practically new. --Figarema |Talk 20:32, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
• ...that The Scots' Dike or dyke is a three and a half mile / 5.25 km long linear earthwork, constructed by the English and the Scots in the year 1552 to mark the division of the Debatable Lands and thereby settle the exact boundary between the kingdoms of Scotland and England. (Self nom) New article. Rosser 18:32, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
• It is tagged as a stub, even though it seems more than substantial enough. Were you finished? Also, you don't need the repetition of alternative spellings and distance units in a brief hook (though of course they are useful in the article); I'd just say use whichever is more common in the area where the topic is (presumably km, though perhaps the units it was measured in when constructed are better?). If you link the unit, readers can see how it converts into whatever they are used to if they don't know. Rigadoun (talk) 17:50, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Most recent expansion (August 26-30) took the article from this to this. The original article pre-August 26 wasn't anything near a stub (4088 characters, to be precise), and the finished, nominated, August 30 product is 10646 characters - only a 2.5x expansion. I don't think that this is eligable. Daniel 06:01, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Besides providing hooks on the front page of Wikipedia, one of the reasons editors make these nominations is to get their work noticed - particularly regarding their areas of interest. I understand rules are rules, but the article in question was a start class with no references for over a year, and I think the quality of it improved quite a bit. Are eligibility parameters for DYK prioritized as the number of words added first, and secondary consideration given to factoids with references, and third to quality of structure, writing, and accountability? This cannot complement the goals and direction of Wikipedia to improve the quality over volume of information. --Moni3 15:53, 31 August 2007 (UTC)Moni3[reply]
Actually, they are; DYK is specifically for new articles. Improved articles are the domain of WP:GA and WP:FA. If DYK were the only way to reward articles, then it would work against those goals, but as it is just for new contributions, it encourages them to meet basic minimum standards.
