Questioning your reasoning

Hi. I don't know anything much about the edits you make to Wikipedia. I'm not checking them either. I haven't the time to chase you around and argue with you, even if there are good reasons to, I don't know. I know one edit and it displays an unhealthy attitude so I am going to show it you, this edit, and point out something which you should already know. Encouraging admins to act purely to strengthen another admins actions, without reasoning of their own, is unfair and unnacceptable. It will foster resentment and scheming in all who see it on display as an acceptable code of conduct. I hope you can look at that edit and consider it a minor slip up. If you look at it as your chosen attitude which deserves no interference, be sure there is cause to doubt your actions as an admin. Just saying, if anything is going to spark a load of arguments and mistrust, it is a comment like that and the inference would be well placed. Now, I don't even recall what the matter was in relation to, or maybe I didn't even look. I was looking at something else and just let my eyes wander. So here is to hoping that you, some random stranger, do things well and they go well for you. If you are backing up another admin in voting, for no reason other than to make other admins more powerful in concensus on content, I should keep it to myself if I were you. This is the responsible attitude you ought to have promised those who made you an administrator, even if you have not had premise to consider it on this particular angle before, yes it is. Zip that up. Obviously you are a tireless contributor. I appreciate that. Maybe I'll come back later and check out how brilliant you are or try to find some evil genius in your work. Otherwise good luck and good bye, ~ R.T.G 16:51, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

rail stub templates

I noticed your recent edits to the old templates removing the blank before the target. Is that supposed to force the categories in the articles to update? Agathoclea (talk) 17:17, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Yes. I realized that the original template changes no longer seemed to be updating the categories. Note that the United States category, for example (Category:United States rail stubs), has dropped in the last approx. 6 minutes from 529 stubs to 140, even though it was stuck at the 500s for a few days! I first tried it with Norway, and the success was so good that I decided to help a few more categories along in this quick way. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 17:21, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Question

Hello, I have a question about what you meant at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion/Log/2011/August/11#Category:Northern_Ireland_election_stubs.2FTemplate:NI-election-stub. I just don't understand the terms like upmerge or the whole reasoning, otherwise I would have closed it. Could you explain this for me? (Sorry I'm not a SfD regular) -- DQ (t) (e) 07:07, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

  1. Merging Category:X into Category:Y means recategortizing all pages which were in Category:X into Category:Y and then deleting Category:X. In the case of stub categories, all stub articles (not subcategories) are categorized using the stub templates (also refered to as "stub tags"), which are categorized using the "category" parameter (in the case of multiple categories, the others are called category1, category2, etc.)
  2. Upmerge is shorthand (used also at CFD) for "merge into the parent category/categories"; in the case of stub categories, it refers on;y to the stub category parents.
  3. Stub categories should generally have at least 60 stubs in them (30 for the main stub category for a WikiProject); should the number of stubs which would go in a category drop below that number, it's generally upmerged as underpopulated.
  4. About the naming statndards of stub tags, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Naming conventions. While the NI- names were used originally for Northern Ireland, that name patern went out of use, as Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion/Log/2007/September/1#A group of redirect reversals can show.
Hope that's all helpful for you. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 08:49, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

False positive reports

To reduce clutter, we remove uncontroversially bad faith reports because it reduces clutter and the warnings we give are sufficient replies. When a vandal makes such a report, he/she knows what's coming, so we don't have to inform them of it.Jasper Deng (talk) 18:10, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Given the high number of reports which have responses which make it clear the reports were in bad faith (such as "Another bogus report by a thwarted would-be vandal"), it seems to me that you are probably wrong. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 18:21, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

"Users by service award" CfD

Hey there. I noticed you made this nomination back in October. Are you aware that at this time, all those categories were speedy deletable? See Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2010_November#13_November_2010 and the related discussion, resulting in delete. Unfortunately G4 may no longer be applicable as your nomination, resulting in rename, is now the most recent deletion discussion, however the categories should have been brought back properly via deletion review before being recreated. I'm unsure about what to do now, although these categories are unencyclopedic as has been decided time and time again. I'm wondering what the appropriate venue to take this is - go to deletion review (while keeping the categories for the time being), bringing up another CfD (I'm rather annoyed by this option because it basically says that CfD can override DRV), or something else (I'm hesitant to G4 them all due to the fireworks it would create, although I think it would be better for the encycopedia). Let me know your thoughts on this one. VegaDark (talk) 21:14, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

  1. Yes, you're right that they could have been G4-ed. unfortunately, I didn't know about this.
  2. No, they can no longer be. Consensus can change, and a CfD whic they survive can be evidewnce that it has.
  3. In my opinion, DRV is an appropriate venue if you are claiming that the closing admin mis-interpreted the consnensus in the discussion in question. So unless you can show that there was a coinsensus for deletion there, I see no grounds for DRV.

Israeli highway marker colors

When we overhauled {{infobox road}} in the first half of 2010, we designed it so that the color of the headers in the infobox could be changed by country and even by highway type. The default we used is a light blue with black text, but here in the US, we're using the same green color background with white text as our guide signs. I've noticed that Israeli highway markers are either blue and white or red and white. Based on a quick look at List of highways in Israel, I'd have to guess that the freeways are blue and white, while the expressways are red and white. Is this correct? We'd like to set up some colors for a few more countries, and we've started a list at User:Fredddie/Sandbox at the moment. I'd like to add correct colors at some point in the future for Israel. Can you help me? Imzadi 1979  10:24, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Also, if you know of any technical drawings of Israel's route markers (you know, the red sign in this picture), send it my way and I'll create SVGs. –Fredddie 10:52, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm not familiar with the terms "Expressway" and "Freeway". Highway 6 isn't free!
Hoghway 1 from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv (actually from Ginot Sacharov to Tel Aviv) has no junctions, just interchanges, back to 2002. East of Jerusalem, it has mostly juctions, I believe. Highway 4 has junctions along most of its route, but interchanges near Tel Aviv. Highway 2, as far as I know, has just interchanges. Highway 40 has only junctions, I think (it definitely has one at the Lod interchange, which an interchange for Hoghway 1 and a junction with the exits for Highway 40). And Highway 6 is a high speed road with just interchanges. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 14:12, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
Freeway=freedom of movement, not free of charge; they can have tolls. It's a technical term meaning that there is "full control of access", meaning no driveways and only access at junctions, and the junctions are grade-separated to eliminate cross traffic. Expressways have some intersections instead of only interchanges (meaning a lack of full grade separation) and may have some driveway access from adjacent property owners (not full control of access). Highway 6 has a blue and white marker at the top of the infobox, so even if there a tolls, it might still be a freeway in terms of design. Imzadi 1979  20:11, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
Yes, by these definitions (in my opinion) red would mean expressway (40 definitely is one, at least the part I know) and blue would mean Freeway (Highway 6 is known as a freeway; Highway 1 is in the part west of Jerusalem).

Stubs

Regarding [3], "Rename all" means that the existing uses are all supposed to be changed immediately, and the exisiting templates deleted. So the templates that are affected there should be listed at Wikipedia:Stub_types_for_deletion#To_orphan and then at Wikipedia:Stub_types_for_deletion#To_delete. But there is no reason to list them on the AWB page, because all of the existing uses are supposed to be replaced immediately anyway. — Carl (CBM · talk) 19:33, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

You are probably still quite busy with it, but your new template currently has the "Requests for unblock" category, causing it to register as a user who wishes to be unblocked in {{category|Requests_for_unblock}}. Request for more time to edit Al Hulailah

I see that one minute after I tagged Al Hulailah for more time before speedy deletion, you deleted it. As you will have seen on the article's talk page before deletion, the author said that he/she was new to editing and would edit the article. On the face of it, this seems like a case of biting a newcomer. Can you explain why you chose not to allow the requested extra time? JamesBWatson (talk) 12:46, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Loking at the page, I saw no significant amount of work worth saving. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:52, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
I agree, but is there any harm in leaving it for ten minutes, to avoid being unnecessarily negative to a new editor? As far as I can see, there would be two possible outcomes: (1) the user adds good content, so we gain an article, (2) the user doesn't add any useful content, so we delete it a little later, and nothing has been lost. In addition, even if immediate deletion would have been your choice, after another administrator has reviewed the speedy deletion nomination and made a decision on it you need fairly solid reasons for overturning that decision. JamesBWatson (talk) 13:26, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Probably an "action clash" - you edited the page to the extent of declining the speedy more or less at the same time that I deleted it; there was no way for me to have seen your edit before I deleted it. (Note that 1 minute apart in the logs could represent mere seconds.) Now that I see this, I've reversed my action. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:30, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Urgent Help and Warning: the IP address, 212.121.219.1 is engaging in serious hacking activities, not just simple acts of vandalism in the other Wikipedia encyclopedias.

Warning: the IP address, 212.121.219.1 registered to Oldham MBC public libraries, and which is permanently blocked in English Wikipedia since 2009, is the source of serious hacking activities. Today on 14 May 2012 other vulnerable Wikipedia encyclopedias are under attack from this address where it is not blocked. This source is capable of hacking Wikipedia, as it is the case today in the other Wikipedia encyclopedias, because it has erased the history archives for instance in the Azerbaijan articles of the Wikipedia encyclopedias and is doing it in other country articles as well, which no simple vandal can do. This source is freely roaming and usurping right now.

Can anyone inform the administrators of the other Wikipedia encyclopedias and help them against the IP address, 212.121.219.1, because most of the small Wikipedia encyclopedias are vulnerable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.224.23.137 (talk) 21:52, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I'm writing to you because you rewrote template:Cfd full, so you can probably help with variables in templates. I think there is a fault in template:Cfd2. {{Cfd full}} provides pre-populated CFD text using Cfd2. This includes an optional heading. However, when subst'ed, the heading is not used.

For example, see Category:DC Comics immortals which says:

add entry {{subst:cfd2|DC Comics immortals|header=More Comics immortals|text='''Delete'''. Your reason(s) for the proposed deletion. ~~~~}}

This results in

Category:DC Comics immortals

Nominator's rationale: Delete. Your reason(s) for the proposed deletion. [sig]

i.e. it uses the category name as the section header, rather than the header text that was entered after the pipe in {{Cfd}}. – Fayenatic London 13:11, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

I believe I fixed it. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 19:42, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
So do I! Thanks and well done. – Fayenatic London 19:49, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
I have updated the documentation page – please check my work. Do the other templates sharing the doc page also have an optional header parameter? For that matter, is it right that they share a doc page, or should it be split with "see also" links added to the others instead? – Fayenatic London 20:05, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Category:Vancouver Whitecaps FC players

Hey, I just noticed you merged the Vancouver MLS category. I wanted to hold off on that until we had the other Vancouver Whitecaps stuff taken care of. Remember what I said was that I wanted Vancouver MLS category to be merged, pending the previous nominations. Which meant that if the other Whitecap nominations didn't go through, then the Whitecaps MLS category shouldn't be merged either. Is there anyway you can put the move on hold, because were running into a bit of a problem here because of that? – Michael (talk) 18:33, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

Your recent edits

Why is an administrator creating so many unreferenced BLPs?! Many of your recent creations don't even have any text, merely an infobox - this is basic stuff and deeply concerning. GiantSnowman 09:14, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

I'd echo that - can't believe you just created articles with an infobox. I've started work on saving them. Also, you should be aware that they aren't actually Knesset members yet - they aren't sworn in until 5 February, and could still resign (or die) - this has happened. As a result, I've reverted all your edits adding 19th Knesset to biographies. Number 57 12:17, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Under WP:BIO#Politicians#1, we don't need to wait for them to be sworn in. And the infobox is enough to state that they qualify for this criterion. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 14:13, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
I'm fine with you creating the articles (I've done a load myself). My issues were (1) that you only had an infobox and (2) that you were including inaccurate material in them by claiming they were members of the Knesset when they weren't yet. Number 57 09:37, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
And my issue is that you have created a whole raft of unsourced BLPs... GiantSnowman 09:41, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
Are you not going to comment? GiantSnowman 16:51, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
I figured that I don't even need to do a full "perfect stub" in a single go. I'd forgotten about the unsourced BLP problem - and nothing I wrote is negative. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 20:44, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
That's because you didn't write anything - on many there was nothing more than an infobox. GiantSnowman 10:31, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

I figured that since the infobox is enough to survive speedy deletion, and I included the interwiki to the Hebrew Wikipedia, that I could subsequently work on the articles later on. The infobox itself shows the people to be covered by the politician criterion. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 11:56, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

You might find not every admin would view nothing but an infobox sufficient. GiantSnowman 12:21, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
I didn't realize that until Versageek deleted Yehiel Bar. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:29, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

CfD

You made this change to the CfD page. I'm considering reversing that since it is misleading. Discussions can be closed at any time, and if you look at most current days, you can commonly find a closed discussion. By including this, one could argue that the comment prohibits the closing of any discussion before it ages to 168 hours of life. WP:SNOW should always be an option. Vegaswikian (talk) 01:38, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

SNOW is an option, but many disucssions are closed after 6 days and a few hours when they aren't SNOW cases. Please note that this text appears on the FFD page also. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:59, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:44cov12.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:44cov12.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 15:35, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

The redirect is for the template namespace and there is no incoming links to the redirect as here and was created with a page move if it was for an article then the case would be different therefore i tagged it for deletion, anyways its fine to keep it. --Ibrahim ebi (talk) 14:55, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

You are receiving this as you have recently added an interwiki link to a page!

Wikidata has been deployed to the English Wikipedia. Wikidata manages interwiki links on a separate project on pages such as this. This means that on Wikipedia articles there is now a language bar on the left hand side of your screen where you can edit and add links rather than adding them into the articles themselves.

If you have any questions regarding Wikidata please use the talk page Wikipedia talk:Wikidata.

Clarification of decline

Hi, can you please clarify why you declined my request? I successfully applied for IPBE twice in the past with the same or a similar reason, both time I stated that I was attempting to edit at school using the school's dynamic proxy addresses, which is usually blocked due to other users on the same network getting blocked for vandalism or due to the nature of the IP addresses. Neither times did I have to state what my IP was and even if I did, it would be pretty pointless as open proxy IPs tend to be dynamic in nature and as suggested would change almost daily. The first request was fulfilled by User:Hersfold and the second was fulfilled by User:Amatulic. Hersfold asked me pretty routine questions about whether I'm able to edit Wikipedia easily at school using other alternative methods and whether I'm able to verify that I go to school, via email. I was able to confidentially confirm that I did and that there was no alternative method of accessing from an unblocked address at school. Amatulic's reason for granting me permission is still visible on my talk page. Not editing from an open proxy IP address was never a condition that was imposed on me. YuMaNuMa Contrib 11:29, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

About the first, I was unaware of the precedents. If specific users had approved it before, you may want to ask these users to give it again (Amatulic is currently active, and Hersfold was recently), and you didn't say that you want it "back" - only that you want it beecause you're blocked again. About the second - I didn't say that it will be on condition, only that it would probably be on condition. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 22:01, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
I guess I overestimated the tools that admins are provided with. Previously, the reasons I provided for why I wanted IPBE were quite lengthy, however this time I decided to just provide a brief statement without explaining why as I thought the admins responding were able to check my user rights log and my previous requests. Since Hersfold was recently desysop'd from what I've heard, I'll ask Amatulic to see whether he can restore my IPBE privileges. Thanks anyways! YuMaNuMa Contrib 00:58, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
I am perfectly capable of checking your right history (it's more difficult with adminship and more advanced stuff, but IPBE is simple - see here) - the question is what do I check. If you had said something about having had the IPBE before, I could have confirmed it. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 22:10, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Category:2000s Western film stubs

Done. Please don't empty the categories yourself, though (as I see you did here with the 1990s stub category, and here with the 1980s category), unless an admin has already closed the discussion with that result and asked for help. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:33, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
I apologize, I attempted to populate them first, but emptied them when it became clear that neither one had nearly enough articles to warrant a separate category. (del/undel) 06:11, 4 August 2011 Od Mishehu (talk | contribs | block) deleted page Template:English-bio-stub (Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion/Log/2011/July/26#Unused redirects) (view/restore)

It is my intention to restore this name (and the others) as unused redirects is not a justification for deletion. Instead the question should be are they potentially useful and I think that they are. Template:English-bio-stub is just as valid as template:British-bio-stub and is more meaningful and natural name than template:England-bio-stub as the nationality is "English" not "England". The only reason why it was empty was because someone went around changing the links, and even if it is empty that is no justification of deleting it as it is a natural name which Template:England-bio-stub is not. -- PBS (talk) 10:30, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, the purpose of keeping {{British-bio-stub}} is to avoid the need to replace allof its uses - which would need to be done before deleting it. No one should be using this redirect otherwise. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 21:38, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Dear Sir, Charles Cranford is my father and I am Charles H. Cranford 11 so I sent the article in as my father is a famous author being Napoleon Hills only partner in 1961 until his death in 1970 together they have sold over 100 million copies of their books, tapes and courses. My dad gave away all his money to our family in 1995 and moved to China and found his happiness. He has just published a book in Vietnam that First News published that has sold over one million copies bought by Mr. Vu of the Trung Nguyen coffee company to give away to the youth. He now has 7 new books that will be published in 2014 and has been granted the license to publish them by the Vietnamese Gov. His new book Right Brain Kids will be published in march of this year. If you go to First News web site you can see my dads new book "Think and Grow Rich in Vietnam" First News is the leading publishing company in Vietnam for foreign authors and foreign books of notable people, like Steve Jobs. Please review my fathers deleting by yourself.

Is my father important or significance to the world well today we only want to see the latest news on trash but for those lives my father and Napoleon Hill have changed or given hope too its in the tens of millions of people that would say to you that he is important. In Asia where he has lived for 18 years his books for example has sold one million copies for "Think and Grow Rich in China" and his lectures draws many people. If you type in my fathers name in Asia you will see how popular he is and lots has been written about him. Since 1976 the Dallas Morning News front page article about him buying Napoleon Bonaparte battle saber for one million dollars there has been nothing written about him in the states. He is a Professor teaching business PhD level courses for a state University in Hong Kong, dissertation supervisor for Tarlac State University and honorary Dean of local Ntt university of Vietnam.

Thank you in advance for your kindness in this matter.

I saw that the category "Films released posthumously" was deleted but it still doesn't seem fair, I'd like to know if there is any alternative category that can replace it, that can put it more specifically, and still have the same meaning.--CastellanetaFan (talk) 00:17, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Egypt-film-director-stub

Hello! While I understand why you reverted my edit, the template {{Egypt-film-director-stub}} should not feed into Category:Egyptian film stubs. The 2 articles that it affects are not about Egyptian films, they are about people who direct Egyptian films, which is already covered by Category:Egyptian people stubs. Removing the third category from the template, prevents those articles from being included in maintenance of {{WikiProject Film}}, which does not cover actors, directors and filmmakers. Those people are covered by adding the parameter |filmbio-work-group=yes to the {{WikiProject Biography}} banner instead. Fortdj33 (talk) 19:40, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

I don't know about WikiProject coverags, but I do know that Category:Foo film director stubs is a child of Category:Foo film biography stubs, which is a child of Category:Foo film stubs. See Category:American film director stubs for a full example. I also know that upmerged stub tags generally feed into a;; ancestor categories which don't have any relevant child already in existance. So since Category:Egyptian film stubs exists, but Category:Egyptian film biography stubs doesn't, the tag should feed into Category:Egyptian film stubs. And your claim that the category is redundant was wrong - a category is only redundant if it, or one of its descendants, appears elsewhere on the page. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:15, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
Maybe redundant wasn't the proper term to use, but obviously Category:Egyptian film biography stubs hasn't been created, because there aren't enough articles to populate it. However, that doesn't mean those articles automatically belong in the parent category. I understand your logic, and I could maybe understand them going into Category:Egyptian media stubs, but articles about people simply don't belong in a category for films. Bridge and Tunnel category splits

I just split the category for Reading Railroad bridges and tunnels, but I can't get the earlier category deleted. Then I saw that some railroad bridge and tunnel categories were moved first, rather than split, but I don't know how to do that. In the meantime, I still say splitting Michigan Central Railroad bridges and tunnels creates an obvious Wikipedia:SMALLCAT problem. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 20:42, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

Keep in mind that SMALLCAT has exceptions; if you think anything should be deleted because of it, feel free to nominate it at CFD. And the user to delete the emptied categories isn't me (the nominator) - it's BrownHairedGirl, who closed the discussion; I'm not seleting a single category from that list unless she asks me to. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:34, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
WP:SMALLCAT has an exception for categories which are "part of a large overall accepted sub-categorization scheme". That appears to apply here.
I have just deleted Category:Michigan Central Railroad bridges and tunnels now that it has been split. I previously moved two categories, after first splitting out the tunnels. That's just technically easier way of performing the split.
A further 2 categories were nominated as not requiring a split, just renaming:
A further 10 categories listed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2014 February 6#Bridges_and_tunnels remain to be split. If anyone wants to split out the tunnels from the remaining category, I can rename the residual categories. Less work than doing it all manually. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:46, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
I don't see a move button on any of the categories. Otherwise I'd move them myself. I do want to make new bridge cats and tunnel cats for railroads like Erie, Lackawanna, and New Haven railroads. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 13:02, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
UPDATE - I just split the tunnel cat off from Category:Pennsylvania Railroad bridges and tunnels. I almost did it to New York Central Railroad, but I'll probably do something like Union Pacific Railroad instead. -------User:DanTD (talk) 13:23, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
@DanTD: there is no move button for categories. The articles have to be recategorised individually, which is we have a bot to do it. I will now set the bot to work on Category:Pennsylvania Railroad bridges and tunnels. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:33, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Additions to Template Redirects

Hi, I notice you've recently been adding a lot of new stub templates to Template Redirects. Some of your additions however are replacing the actual template with its redirect; for example, {{BroomeNY-NRHP-stub}}{{BroomeCountyNY-NRHP-stub}}, {{ClintonNY-NRHP-stub}}{{ClintonCountyNY-NRHP-stub}}, {{MadisonNY-NRHP-stub}}{{MadisonCountyNY-NRHP-stub}} etc. It seems to be the stubs involving NRHP, they don't conform to the usual format...

I think the two solutions are either remove those from Template Redirects or 'swap' the redirect and the template (after a discussion?) I don't really know about stub naming policy or template moving so I thought I'd bring it to your attention.Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 13:46, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

There was a discussion, and I've been renaming to include the word "County" in the stub tags - look at my move log. I'll get to these at some point, but for now there are redirects to ensure that AWB users don't break anything by updating these tags to their future names. And the issue isn't about NRHPs - it's about US county-level stub tags, as you can see from my other additions to the section. In fact, I'm currently going over this scan, where I expect to find all the templates I need to move (some of them without a redirect, most with, and fixing the tag afterwards). What brings up the New York NRHPs is the fact that I was also stub-sorting the NY churches, and many of these are NHRPs - so I figured that at the same time, I can start moving these to their proper names. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 17:19, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Template:Asbox/templatepage

Hi, these two edits shouldn't have been necessary. The first did nothing at all; the second means that the sortkey is now space-asterisk-pagename instead of space-pagename. Stub templates with a blank |tempsort= sorted under space previously, and they still do; so I'm not at all sure why you put an asterisk in. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:23, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Actually, I expected the first to do the trick - but when I checked it out (by null-editing {{US-west-university-stub}} and checking where on the list it was in Category:Western United States university stubs) I saw that it didn't. So I did the second, and that did it. All stub tags sort under space - the question is their internal order; before I did this second edit, {{US-west-university-stub}} was after {{Oregon-university-stub}}. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 02:46, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
The first edit was ineffective because of the way that parser functions like {{#if:}} work - after expanding (and otherwise processing) whatever they enclose, all leading and trailing whitespace is removed. So, by altering
{{#if:{{{tempsort|}}}|{{{tempsort}}}|{{PAGENAME}}}}
to
{{#if:{{{tempsort|}}}|{{{tempsort}}}| {{PAGENAME}}}}
the space that you added was simply being stripped out again. Stub tags sort under space because there is a space before that {{#if:}} --Redrose64 (talk) 12:09, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
The first edit didn't achieve the goal I had (I didn't know, before I started, that it wouldn't), so I did the second edit. I told you the test (which I believe to be reliable immediately after doing the edit). The second edit did the trick. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:12, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Stubs

Do you plan to send any redirects for deletion after they are orphaned? -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:05, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

I usually don't keep an eye on these. However, I recently happaned to orphan {{NewYorkCity-struct-stub}} (by sorting the NYC structure stub category by borough), and I'm getting lots of "redirects are cheap"-type keep votes - see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2014 May 21#Template:NewYorkCity-struct-stub. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 02:41, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

So, what do we earn by replacing them? I am getting troubles because sometimes my bot only replaces templates. Thus, I would like to reduce the list in the things that really do matter and enjoy consensus. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:52, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Back in the days of SFD, they were nearly always deleted once orphaned. (nd the templates I deal with are always at the end, so it's simple to see what's going on there.) You may want to try and bring up the issue at WT:WSS. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 08:44, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

RfD'ing template redirects

I noticed that you recently tagged Template:Euro-bank-stub for RfD, but you placed the RfD tag below the redirect (presumably to avoid breaking transclusions of it). The current preferred method is to wrap the RfD template around the redirect, which causes it to behave correctly whether it's being viewed directly or transcluded. I've updated that particular redirect in that manner. Note that Twinkle will handle this for you if you use it to do the tagging. Jackmcbarn (talk) 04:44, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

To be fair, when I saw how stringly it was opposed, I was surprized it hadn't been SNOWed. I actually did think, when I started the discussion, that it had a chance of succeeding - otherwise I never would have nominated it, that would have been POINT. Any time I make a nomination, I do it because I believe that:L
  1. It passing would actually improve Wikipedia, even with no followup. Some times, that may mean that consistantly bad is better than inconsistant.
  2. That it nhas a chance of passing, and doesn't contradict any recently established concensus.
Now, the list of disccussions I saw about the Georgia disambiguation said nothing about what I was about to propose - it erfered to what should be disambiguated, not how it should. And I thought I had a decent case there. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 18:26, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

AWB template redirects - stubs

Hi, I know you have done lots of work both with the geo stub templates and on the AWB template redirect page so I thought I'd let you know / ask your advice on the following; on WP:AWB/TR there are a number of redirects that don't seem right;

They are all not swapping and the third isn't even a redirect.

Also;

All seem to swap the wrong way i.e. they are swapping from a template to a redirect. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 08:52, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

As to the first group, thank you, I have fixed it (and that puts YorkPA in the second group). As to the second, these are redirects which I will eventually reverse (just like I already did with various others, see the others in this edit, for example). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 18:28, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
And by now I've gotten to the first 2 on this list of reverse entries. I'm going down a list which is at User:Od Mishehu/list1, one nentry at a time - although not all of them are making it to AWB/TR - only the ones which refer to a county, are used on at least 2 pages, and are unambiguous with any location outside the county (unlike {{LosAngelesCA-school-stub}}, for example, which is ambiguous only with a city which is in the county). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 17:04, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

I've observed this behaviour by new users for some time, and was equally frustrated by this annoying practice to try to fool the patrollers. I don't think that's entirely true, though. You'll notice usage of the "Fixed typo" edit summary is almost always when they're editing from the mobile web. Upon further investigation, the mobile interface suggests certain edit summaries. "Fixed typo" is one of them, along with "Added content", which you'll see just as often. I don't know how to navigate to it, but I'm even going to guess the mobile web interface, at least some configuration, has some sort of drop-down menu of common edit summaries to chose from. This would explain the similar formatting of the edit summaries. Following this logic, I don't think we're looking at sly, intentionally misleading edit summaries, but rather they tapped the wrong thing – or they're just plain lazy. The filter may still be useful, I just wouldn't tag it as vandalism. That's my theory... — MusikAnimal talk 14:24, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
There are plenty of constructive edits being labeled as vandalism [6] [7] [8] [9]. Perhaps a more appropriate tag could be introduced, such as "possible misleading edit summary". Or, as I've been tempted to do, contact the mobile web developers about this problem. Maybe they could improve the interface to help lessen the misuse of the pre-supplied edit summaries. — MusikAnimal talk 14:29, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
I've boldly removed tagging from the filter, for now. Hopefully that's alright, best — MusikAnimal talk 14:35, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
After a discussion at #wikimedia-tech, I've filed a report on Bugzilla to tag edits with pre-supplied edit summaries, and to propose ways to lessen the misuse of "Fixed typo" edit summary, in particular. Hopefully we can alleviate this problem. For now, we should probably try to assume good-faith when you see the "Fixed typo" edit summary. Many thanks — MusikAnimal talk 15:45, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal: OK, I just tried editing from the mobile interface, and at least the version I'm using doesn't have a drop down menu, but it does suggest two edit summaries. Above the ES box bolded text reads "How did you improve the page?". Inside box, there is greyed-out text that says: "Example: Fixed typo, added content". So I suspect MusikAnimal is right along the "just plain lazy" explanation; people are just copying the suggested edit summaries, and in that case "misleading edit summary" would probably be a better tag. But I don't see anything wrong with a filter to tag such edits as long as it isn't warning or disallowing. I always check the diff of flagged edits before reverting; reverting on the basis of a tag alone is far too risky. Altamel (talk) 16:49, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
@Altamel: Looks like this is an issue with the mobile app, not the mobile site, where there are a series of buttons to hit for the edit summary. Hence why you have edit summaries like this. Here the user hit all the buttons. This "canned edit summary" feature, as they call it, is pretty useful, it's just that users end up misclassifying their edits. I'd hold off on creating a new tag until we know what the developers are going to do. — MusikAnimal talk 18:35, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

AWB weirdness

See [10], [11], and [12]; do you know why it's moving {{National Register of Historic Places}}? It doesn't do that in most edits; [13] is much more typical. I'm not complaining; just thought you might want to know if it's not behaving properly. Nyttend (talk) 04:09, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

I thought that it was simply placing multiple navboxes on the same line... Actually, I just checked more closely what it was doing, and the answer is as follows: I have a regex replacer that adds a category to the same line as the first navbox; AWB's genfixes, afterwards, removes the category and the newline character to the category sectiojn, leaving both navboxes on the same line. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:24, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
But I'm still confused — why doesn't it move all of the navboxes, and why does it move just some of them? Nyttend (talk) 04:38, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
It simply removed a newline character after a regex find-and-replace added a category on te same line. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:39, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

stub sorting

Hi Od Mishehu, I have recently returned to sorting stubs and have a few proposals for new categories at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals which are not just following existing splits that I would like some one to have a look over and check I am not going against the grain on any of them. I have already created some from proposals that I nominated but as these are completly new splits I would prefer someone else to say yes before I create them. Also thanks for the note regarding the renaming of Category:American football running back, pre-1910 birth stubs I have commented on the proposal with a slightly different idea. What do you think, it may mean doing the same on the other American football position biography stubs but should save on renaming in the future. Waacstats (talk) 11:26, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

I used Twinkle to nominate the category for renaming - and you just happenned to be the author of it at the time, since I had previously merged the old history. I went through your proposals and commented where I had something to say. As to your suggestion about the rename here - I think that this should be done, if at all, throughout the entire Category:American sportspeople stubs tree. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:27, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

Africa Cup of Nations by year

I note that this category Category:Africa Cup of Nations was renamed from “African Nations Cup” in 2010 (ref CFD 20 January 2010). However while the year categories for 2006 to 2017 (7) became Category: 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, the earlier year categories from 1957 to 2004 (24; plus their subcategories) are African not Africa Cup of Nations eg Category: 2004 African Cup of Nations. Was this intentional? This became apparent when I was adding a navbox to the categories back to 2000 for navigation to other years in the decade eg see Category: 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Quite a few categories still to do (?) of course. Hugo999 (talk) 10:57, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

To quote the nomination: "The competition has been known as the Africa Cup of Nations since 2006". We generally use the current name for any overview-level of the topic, and the name which was used at the time for topics covering a specific time frame. For example, look at the contents of categories like Category:Minnesota Twins seasons, Category:Los Angeles Dodgers seasons, Category:San Francisco Giants seasons. If you want any specific information on the issue, try talking to users who deal with these articles. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:25, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Not sure how to close a CfD discussion

Hi there! I noticed you closed some of the other CfD discussions, so I was hoping you could have a look at one I nominated. Apologies if I'm going to the wrong place. I nominated the Category:Briton deities and its two subcategories (gods and goddesses) for renaming. It seems we've basically arrived at Category:Deities of the ancient Britons as the consensus name. What needs to happen next? Q·L·1968 21:16, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

As the nominator, you wait for an uninvolved admin to close it (although if more comments are added while you're waiting, feel free to respond). If there's a consensus to rename, the admin will either rename it manually, or ask the CFD bot to handle it. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 21:20, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

20th Knesset

Good work on adding it to infoboxes, but could you link it to the election like all previous Knesset links? Cheers, Number 57 14:30, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

I intend to fix the others, too - the links should be to the Knesset data, not the election data. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 14:31, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
Should it? It's always been to the election. Maybe worth discussing at Template talk:Infobox Member of the Knesset. Number 57 14:36, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
I started doing this from the top of the list (Benjamin Netanyahu, where the infobox is at the beginning of the Early political career: 1988–1996 section), where they're all by knesset number; when I noticed it a few MKs later, it see,ed obvious to me that Bibi's page is right and the others are wrong. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 14:47, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
I've never seen it done like the one on Netanyahu's article – this would be one of the few I've not edited – I guess it was added by someone unfamiliar with the usual pattern. Number 57 14:48, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
The logic of this, IMO, is that the main thing is not the election - it's being in the Knesset; since we have pages for both, I think we should link to the latter, not the former. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 14:52, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! When something is buried that deep in the history of a heavily edited page, it's generally best to just leave it to avoid drawing more attention to it. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:13, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Just as necessary as hiding them in the block log, or as hiding the deletion of the user pages; the decision to hide the relevant log entries was made by other users - in this case, The Earwig. In fact, merely the presence of a revdel-ed block log attracts attention to USS for anyone who knos how Wikipedia works. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 03:54, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
@HJ Mitchell: I deleted a handful of old talk pages of hardblocked users with names attacking specific individuals a couple weeks ago under G10. Said pages were publicly categorized and readily accessible—I actually found them through this thread. There's no reason to keep these around (in our database dumps, mirrors, etc), as I'm sure you'll agree, and many of them did not even belong to real users anymore. In deleting, the attacks resurface at the front of the deletion log, so I deleted those under the revdel policy's log redaction criterion. I don't have much of an opinion about removing old revisions from UAA—it's less important, surely, but justifiable. I don't see the Streisand effect applying when this stuff is admin-only; the usernames are not ridiculously awful, just crude and offensive, so any passing admins aren't going to learn much aside from the fact that someone in 2010 said "[User] sucks c0ck" or whatever. — Earwig talk 04:24, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. CfD closure

Hi, I noticed you closed this CfD discussion as delete. Is it possible to retrieve which subcategories were in the deleted category? Because these subcategories may need to be re-parented to one or more parent categories of the deleted category in order not to become orphans. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:59, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

In general, no. In this case, since I can figure out which user emptied the category (Cydebot, who was also the deleting admin) and when (shortly before 8:47 UTC on December 30th, which I figured out based on the deletion log), I could get you the list - I believe that they're all on this page. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 07:43, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

I want to understand what exactly you want done. hewiki policy is not to add lists of victims to disasters, terror incidents etc. and to mention in name only notable people "worthy" of an article (exceptions can be found here and there). Do you )Mjroots request that I delete the names of victims from talk page? DGtal (talk) 22:50, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

@DGtal: Yes, I'm asking for oversight of that edit I linked to above. None of the victims are notable enough to sustain an article as far as I know. There is a strong possibility that these are not victims, but living people. Mjroots (talk) 22:54, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

@Mjroots:We didn't have our revisions oversighted, just hidden from anyone less than an admin; the page you linked to was, in fact, hidden at that level. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 11:10, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Oddly-named categories

There seem to be problems with the outcome of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2016 February 10#Media by country. See for instance:

Are these non-English names for, presumably, Brazil etc.; or are they language names? If the latter, surely Category:Media in German language would have been better. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:22, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Well, there's no such thing as a Jewish race or a Palestinian race. But these ethnic groups are not "races". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots18:20, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
I have seen it claimed that there is some evidence of "genetic race", although they are nowhere near pure. For example, there are many gens that appear primarily in specific races. See, for example, Tay–Sachs disease, which has "an increased disease prevalence in Ashkenazi Jewish people". עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 18:21, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

I have a dim memory of seeing at the time that somebody was fixing these, but apparently it no longer continues. How come? Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 17:36, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Stub template redirects

Hi. Two years ago you added a lot of stub template redirects to AWB's corresponding page. Like this for example. What is the reason behind it? Is there a plan to delete the redirects at some point? Since the redirects follow the "-stub" rule there is no benefit for AWB's general fixes whether they are removed or not.-- Magioladitis (talk) 06:32, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

There had been a consensus at WikiProject Stub Sorting to use AWB to help remove stub tag redirects over time; back when stub types used their own deletion process (WP:Stub types for deletion), we kept having these stub tag redirects deleted. Since then, others have been deleted - either as G6 (e.g {{Russian-bio-stub}}), or under RFD (see, for example, Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2014 June 2#Template:Alien-stub). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 17:40, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Od Mishehu. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Changing Taxobox to speciesbox

Hi. I've noticed that you have recently changed taxobox to speciesbox in several animal articles. Please can I ask why you are doing this. I'm not necessarily against the changes, I am just wondering what is the motivation behind the changes. DrChrissy (talk) 21:12, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

One of the ajor problems wit the old taxonomy system is the fact that, to change a single detail, you may need to do a whole lot of edits. The fact thaty no one actually handles this in an organized way means that, in the end, you have many inconsistancies amoung the taxoboxes in a single group. The automatic taxobox system is one which wwould significantly reduce this problem. For example, let's take the hypothetical situation that scientists end up deciding to group rodents and lagomorphs in a new order (each of these is currently an order), with a new name. Under the old system, each article on a rodent taxon or a logomorph taxon would need to be edited individually; since there are (by a printed reliable source I have at home, probably outdated by now - the numbers have probably gone up) about 2000 modern species of rodent, this would be a major task to get done. Under the new system, only a few edits would need to be done. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 03:07, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the explanation. You might be interested in this current conversation Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tree of Life#Reptiliae or Aves?. DrChrissy (talk) 16:38, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
Here, by the way, is a perfect axample of the reason. Let's say that for now we decide, based on scientific usage, to use class Aves for birds; and then several years from now we end up deciding to change this. Would we want to go and fix every single article about bird taxons, or just a handful of higher-level taxonomy templates? I would definitely say the latter. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 16:50, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I see your point entirely. DrChrissy (talk) 17:34, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
I'm a strong supporter of the automated taxobox system (and I spend quite a bit of my time fixing errors in it). The main argument is consistency among Wikipedia articles. However, we should be wary of over-selling the idea of not needing to fix every single article when taxonomies change. This is fine when the changed taxon is sufficiently high level not to be mentioned in the article, but taxa closer to the topic of the article (e.g. families or superfamilies in a genus article) are often discussed in the article, so changing the taxobox is only one step: the article still needs to be checked. Peter coxhead (talk) 17:46, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
This, of course, only applies to close taxa - my examples above are specificly about more distantr taxa. To take an other example: Cetaceans (a group that can reasonably be defined as the smallest clade containing whales and dolphins) were once classified as their own order of ammmals. Now they are classified as an Infraorder of Artiodactyla/Cetartiodactyla (the former was used to refer to what was believed to be the clade of all animals with cloven hooves; it was later expanded when Cetaceans were discovered to belong to this clade, and the "Cet" at the beginning is used to clarify this fact). This, of course, would require lots of taxobox work, which had only been done partly; but no article work at all except for Cetacea, its immediate child taxons (Archaeoceti, Baleen whale, Toothed whale), Evolution of cetaceans, a few articles on the Artiodactyla group (Whippomorpha, Cetancodontamorpha, Cetruminantia, Hippopotamidae, Even-toed ungulate), and perhaps some articles on the mammal/Theria/Eutheria/Laurasiatheria range. In fact, there was probably more work done on creating new articles and modifying those articles which didn't need any taxobox changes, than on the prose of articles which did. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 19:45, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
Sure, changes generally work fine for distant taxa. Peter coxhead (talk) 21:57, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Attempt to catch invalid ranks in taxonomy templates

Please see Template talk:Anglicise rank. Category:Taxonomy templates using invalid rank parameters was (and right now still is) full of a very large number of perfectly correct templates that have a parent with an incorrect rank value, making it misleading, regardless of the heading re subtaxa. I have now fixed this, I think. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:38, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

Update: I moved the category to Category:Taxonomy templates using unrecognized rank parameters, since the rank may not necessarily be invalid, just not yet in {{Anglicise rank}}. It's mostly empty now as I been fixing the incorrect rank values. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:15, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
To be fair, I needed some quick-and-easy way to find the many taxonomy templates which had been created with the wrong taxon name before I set it up; now that it's been mostly handled, there will probably be many fewer tempkates which go there. What orignally got me looking for these was finding family- and order-ranked taxons missing from taxoboxes, and then discovering that one of them was labeles "family" in stead of "familia". עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 14:36, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
Oh, my comment wasn't intended as any criticism of your initial action at all, merely as a refinement. The whole exercise you started has been extremely valuable in my view, and I've been happy to sort out the taxonomy templates – the state of many has long bugged me.
How do you feel about deleting those which are wrongly set up and not used? For example, those at English names when there is one at the correct scientific name, or those set up for species which aren't needed (because unless the species links to a sub-genus taxon, {{Speciesbox}} should be used, and it picks up the genus from the binomial. So far I've tended to just blank them – occasionally I've used {{db}}, but in the past I've found that formally proposing them for discussion and deletion isn't very satisfactory, because few discussants seem to understand what they do or how they should be set up. Would you be happy to delete some if I give you a list? Peter coxhead (talk) 19:14, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
I certainly think we should delete them, although I don't believe theyt;re covered by any current CSDs. I've made a few nominations at TFD. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 19:35, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
So you think we should list hundreds at TfD? (For example, there are currently over 1,000 with |rank=species of which, if my experience to date is a guide, 90-95% aren't needed once the article is changed to use {{Speciesbox}} rather than {{Automatic taxobox}}. Um... I feel more like just carrying on blanking them. Peter coxhead (talk) 19:41, 10 October 2016 (UTC)

Edit request on MW message

Hi Od Mishehu, regarding MediaWiki:titleblacklist-custom-double-category-prefix, may we change [[:Category:{{PAGENAME}}]] to [[:{{FULLPAGENAME}}]] to generalize its usage? I've recently requested some additional double namespace prefixes to be added to the blacklist, so the scope of this message may change. (per WP:MULTI, please comment on that thread if you had concerns.) — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 17:58, 11 October 2016 (UTC)

concerning the current portal and banned user

not sure what you are talking about with respect to "blocked user" identification? - if you have been following the current portal for a number of years you would know exactly which user is the blocked one - these days it goes without saying since it is so obvious - geolocate the anon ip and you will find the location to be near Kalamazoo michagan = what admin Rubin long ago termed and ad infinitum reverted without even bothering to make a statement "the Michigan kid" = Rubin long ago gave him a permanent ban and yet he just comes back under another sock anon ip to post--98.167.194.3 (talk) 07:27, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Merely the fact that these 2 IP addresses are from the same part of Michigan and edit subpages of Portal:Current events isn't enough of a reason to call them the same person. Can you give me better evidence than that? עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 17:28, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
it was enough for Arthur Rubin for years to revert "thousands" of edits by this banned user and from what I can see he finally just gave up with that permanently banned editor now wielding free reign and laughing at all you admins.--98.167.194.3 (talk) 21:26, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
I should probably say something else - by wiki's own rules a banned user who posts is doing WP:block evasion and thereby can be (1) immediately reverted, (2) no need for a reason, and finally and most importantly, (3) to assist a banned user is also a violation of wiki rules and is also a bannable offence.--98.167.194.3 (talk) 21:36, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
All what you said about Wikipedia policy is true - provided that you have the name of an account of this sockpuppeteer, and a reasonable way to identify an account as belonging to this person - merely a narrow area of interest and editing from a small part of Michigan isn't enough for that. Please either file a report at Sockpuppet investigations, or suply me with the evidence so that I can do so. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 04:08, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

Please either leave this suspected sockpuppet alone, or make a case that there is actually sockpuppetry here, including links to similar edits done by the account and the IP address. I'm sure that Arthur Rubin would have been able to make a good case back in January 2015, although he may have forgotten the dertails by now. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 02:46, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
Nonsense. The IP in question is either the banned user or someone making edits suggested by the banned user. I lean toward the latter, as he's using real edit summaries, this time.
A sock puppet report is inappropriate. If this were not obvious, filing a "long term abuse" report might be required. I've blocked the "Michigan kid" IP for 12 months; the last block I've seen of a relatively stable instance of this banned user was for 5 years. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 04:56, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Deletion of Category:Cardiovascular disease deaths

Hi Od Mishehu/Archive15, I was surprised to see that you decided to delete Category:Cardiovascular disease deaths after participants (including the nominator user:Marcocapelle ) in that wp:CfD all voted in favour of diffusing, not deleting. I wonder if I may ask how you arrived at your delete decision. I would appreciate a response on my talkpage. Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 15:40, 29 October 2016 (UTC)please ping me

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Od Mishehu.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:48, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Protected Areas of the...

What should we do with these redirects after they are orphaned? Delete them? -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:45, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Probably, I just nominated the first one at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2016 December 15#Template:Protected Areas of the United States; if there's no significant opposition, I would probably just delete any others which become orphaned. Certainly remove them from the list once they're orphaned, as they are just there to eventually forward all the links to the new place. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 18:33, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Redirects to stubs

Hi I need you advice. Any particular reason there are still pages in Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Template_redirects#Stub_templates? I mean should they really all these redirects be replaced? -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:47, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

We generally want stub redirects to get bypassed eventually; on the other hand, it;s frequently not worth the edits. So in stead, we list them there, and over time they get fixed without anyone thinking about it at the time it's being done. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 11:53, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I now wonder why -his- is preferred over -history- -- Magioladitis (talk) 11:55, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
Because at WikiProject Stub Sorting (WSS) we have certain standards for the tag names; this was aparently the established name by October 2005. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:02, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Maybe use to get rid of as many redirects as possible then? -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:28, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

Any which are completely orphaned should probably be deleted. Don;t go out of your way to orphan them, though - that would violate WP:R2D. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 21:18, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

I think there are some already orphan. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:21, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

NCStateParks can go too. -- Magioladitis (talk) 00:44, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

So to make clear: Do you think stub redirects should be replaced but not by bots and not as sole edits? -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:55, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

They should be replaced as side-effects of other edits (typicly AWB), but not as the purpose of an edit. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:57, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

OK. Removed. Better find another way then. I thought I was helping the Stub sorting project. Since this page can cause side-effects find other ways to replace them. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:59, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

The issue here is, as wasmentioned in the case over several issues, WP:COSMETICBOT. If you look closely at what I wrote, you'll see that I explicitlyt mentioned this fact. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:01, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

OK I claim that if a task has consensus it can be done independently of COSMETICBOT. This is something it happens very often and not only be me. I removed the stubs using my main account in order to help a job that I thought it has consensus by an entire project assuming good faith. The same way people remove unused parameters, duplicated arguments etc. This page is used by my bot too and when the bot fails to make an edit it only makes a minor edit. Since the initial purpose of the pages was to help developers to avoid hard coding I do not think I need extra complexity and get into more trouble for this. Recently a bot was approved to remove unused parameters. I suggest that you ask for a bot to remove the redirects and see if it gets approval. It seems people push now to not allow bots do multiple tasks together. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:08, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
