Please review DYK nomination

Hi, Richard. I wonder if you could review our DYK nomination for the new article Honey Queen Program our students created at Vassar College as part of a curricular project. Thanks! Wikipedia Loves Libraries

Hi. I hope you're doing well. I am looking forward to the NYPL event, but what are we planning to do? Is it an editathon, a teaching event, lectures, all of the above? Is there a planning page? If so, could you link it at Wikipedia Loves Libraries#Northeast? Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:02, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User:Nemo_bis told me that you are currently maintaining it and it consist mostly of Javascript running on the toolserver. I'm going to ask one of our it.wiki's JS wizards to help me in implementing it. May you help us?. Thanks in advance. -- CristianCantoro (talk) 18:15, 12 September 2011 (UTC) p.s.: please answer me (in English, of course) on my it.wiki talk page, thank you.[reply]

SUNY-ESF, Syracuse NY Professor Interested in using Wikipedia

Hi Pharos, Can I give him our name/email to have him get in contact with you? He is a polymer chemist and has been really interested in the work we were doing here at Michigan and would like to do the same at SUNY-ESF this semester. Can we have some of the Syracuse Ambassadors take on his course as well? Thanks! MichChemGSI (talk) 14:21, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So I was looking

at the Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Libraries, specifically at the event posted for the Embudo Valley Library and thought to myself, "Gee Einar, You're even better than I thought. I don't even remember how I managed to link this to the little blurb I put on our website. I'm impressed with me." However upon closer inspection I discovered that it appeared to be you who did it. All those things that i said about myself - well they are all now pointed at you, squared. Very nice work and thank you very much. Feel free to drop in. Wikipedia:The Musical in NYC

You are invited to Wikipedia:The Musical in NYC, an editathon, Wikipedia meet-up and lectures that will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011, at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (at Lincoln Center), as part of the Wikipedia Loves Libraries events being held across the USA.

All are welcome, sign up on the wiki and here!--Pharos (talk) 04:50, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think the event was a decided success, with at least half a dozen total newbies learning the ropes, and another dozen Wikipedians finding materials that they would not otherwise have had access to. I expanded the article on The Boy (musical) together with one of my trainees (User:Annveal), and we moved it from Stub class to at least Start class. Both of my trainees also got practical experience making edits and adding refs to articles that they selected. I really think that training-oriented sessions at the libraries are a great way to try to get new people involved in WP. An interesting thing that one of my trainees told me is that she was hesitant to edit, for fear that she would make a mistake, and also worried that other editors would criticize what she had done. The male trainee had no fears like that. I wonder if one of the reasons for the reluctance of women to join the WP project is that they are, in general, more risk-averse regarding editing. Obviously, there are lots of exceptions, but this was a very stark contrast in my two trainees yesterday. All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk)

Hi Pharos! Thanks for putting together the Wikipedia Loves Library event in NYC. It'd be grand to have a report about it (no matter how short or long) for This Month in GLAM. I do hope you or another attendee can provide a description of how the event went, outcomes and perhaps images (with links to any Wiki space). Please visit here and contribute if you can. It can be in the main features or the briefly section. Thanks again for coordinating the event :) SarahStierch (talk) 20:43, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hi Pharos, Just wanted to let you know that I am partially incapacitated because I ruptured the ACL in my left knee two months ago. I'm still in a brace, and my life currently consists of exercising and napping with little bits of Wikipedia in between! Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 14:00, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for you kind words

following my complete failure as a wikipedia workshop organizer. I was not really trying to draw experienced editors, rather was hoping to work with a few locals. Were I to try and do a wikigathering I would first attempt to get a venue in Santa Fe because, it is already a destination for a lot of folks. I had not really given that idea any thought - now I will. You seem to be a New Yorker, probably lots of wikipedians out there. Life is supposed to be interesting and it pretty much lives up to billing. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 02:32, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Danish Modern furniture at MOMA

Hello Pharos. As resident Wikipedian at MoMA, you may be able to help out with photos of Danish Modern furniture. I visited MoMA a couple of years ago but my photos are not detailed enough to illustrate the article we are developing on Danish modern and the biographies of related designers. I realize there are already a few overviews of the exhibition of modern furniture and design on Commons but what we really need are individual shots: chairs, tables, lamps or whatever. You will get a better idea of what we are looking for if you look at the Danish modern article itself. Perhaps you or one of your colleagues could help out by photographing a few of the exhibits and uploading them onto Commons. Basic info should include the name of the designer, the year designed and the designation of the object. - Ipigott (talk) 10:27, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

About your notices

Hi there! I'm not a capitol-area wikipedian. Please discontinue sending me information about such events. I do consider myself a Hudson Valley resident, just like those who live in Yonkers might consider themselves so. I am interested in NYC-based events, though my recent involvement in Wikipedia has declined due to lack of gumption. Thanks for your efforts, and please don't consider this negative feedback any form of criticism. BusterD (talk) 10:49, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm getting emails from people I never gave my email address to. Please ask these folks to take me off the mailing list. This is a disappointing development. BusterD (talk) 02:42, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! Problem with IP editor

Hi. I really need some administrator-to-administrator advice. Can you offer your opinions on Question 2 - 5 that I've posed at the top of this discussion?

Everyone else participating there is only focusing on Question 1, which I thought would be answered more quickly and straightforwardly, and is already being discussed at Talk:Kobe Bryant sexual assault case If you want to offer your insights on Question 1 as well, can you do so there? Thanks! Nightscream (talk) 05:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Really? Congratulations, dude! What issue/cover date is that? I couldn't find it through a Google search. Nightscream (talk) 04:20, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The upcoming Meetup

Richard, I'd like to start a campaign to do away with unregistered IP editing, and would like to take advantage of the upcoming Meetup to do so. How should I go about this? Do I need to reserve a talk, or something? Or should I pass around a petition or start a page for it? Nightscream (talk) 04:20, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The best thing for this type of topic would probably be to add it as a lightning talk here: Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wikipedia Day#Lightning Talks.--Pharos (talk) 17:59, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Are the lightning talks those ones that I partipated in last year, from which I got the free TV shirt? If so, then rather than repeat myself, I'd like to actually implement this. How do I go about doing so? Nightscream (talk) 01:51, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, yeah, that was your talk topic last year. I guess to try to implement something like this you would make a proposal page on-wiki, and you could possibly invite people to an open space group discussion session if enough people are interested. BTW, I actually rather disagree on this one, but that's why we talk about stuff :)--Pharos (talk) 02:21, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interview?

My apologies for the non-personalized note; I've got several people to contact here. We're looking for administrators who would be willing to be interviewed by students as a part of Wikipedia's WP:United States Education Program. Dr. Jonathan Obar is teaching the course, and it's a study in how Wikipedia is governed and how administrators are selected. If you're not interested, you may either ignore this invitation or remove your name from the list of admins we've contacted. MSU Interview

Dear Pharos,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 17:54, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

question about coverage of education program in the Signpost

Hi,

Re: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2012-03-12/Education report, Skomorokh suggested I contact you regarding my questions.

Is the Signpost Education section meant to be a Wikipedia Education report or a Wikimedia Education report? I notice that most of the information in the new education article doesn't have much to do with the en:wp community, and the seven editors chosen in the report as "pilot students" have done little if any editing on the en:wp. (Check their contributions.)

This new article focused on projects that take place off en:wp. Meanwhile, the US/Canada Education Program has started on the en:wp with little sign that the massive problems it encountered during the Fall semester have been addressed. For example, one editor on the "Online Ambassadors Steering Committee" was responsible for many of the problems. She submitted an article for Good article review on en:wp a few weeks ago that contained copyvio/plagiarism/close paraphrasing. When this was pointed out to her, she didn't understand the problems. (See Talk:Douglas W. Owsley/GA1)

Also, I suggest that you look through Wikipedia talk:United States Education Program/Archive 1 and Wikipedia talk:United States Education Program/Archive 2 and search for "cindy" you will get an inkling of the degree her approach disrupted the en:wp community.

Yet this editor is still a member of the Online Ambassador Selection Committee.

I have attempted to obtain more information about Online Ambassador Selection, as have others, but have run against a brick wall. See: User talk Moonriddengirl aka Mdennis(WMF) suggested I contact you I've learned that there is no one to contact that supervises the Online Ambassador Selection Committee, and no way to learn what's going on.

I'm hoping that the "Education report" will contain information helpful for editors on en:wp. Will this be possible? Or is the coverage only going to be of off site activities that are not directed at the en:wp editing community?

Thanks, MathewTownsend (talk) 13:53, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Social connections

Thanks for posting on my page to tell me about that Wikipedia Loves Libraries meetup the next city over. I am not sure what I think about the fact that it is possible for people to be organizing nearby events and for people to not necessarily know that they are happening. I wrote to the people organizing it and it seems like we will stay in touch.

I came here to ask you for advice about who I should contact for User:MathewTownsend's problem, but I see that he just came to you above. I feel like when Wikipedia editors take on public presentation roles and seem to be getting a Wikipedia community endorsement then any complaints about them ought to be fielded efficiently with the most possible care, and Mathew has has already put a lot of effort into trying to be heard without getting a sufficient response. I want to put this on the discussion agenda for the next IRC chat, but in the meantime, can you think of who else I could ask for advice on handling this? Signpost in other languages

Hi,

I was unaware that the Signpost was translated into other languages and disseminated to other wikis. Thanks for the information. I guess the feedback from the Foundation and other language communities are screen out from our en:wp, and the articles they write are also screened out, as all articles I've ever seen are written by en:wp editors. Thanks for that information also. (I wonder how all that works.) I was interested to see that the seven editors you mention in your article don't edit on en:wp. Perhaps you could add to the article where they do edit? Or is it your view that the main action of en:wp and other wikis is not on the encyclopedia but in meet ups and other off site activities? That would justify such a long article that actually includes very few people that contribute directly to the encyclopedia. (Guess that explains why editor contributions to en:wp is dwindling - they're just not important.) Thanks, MathewTownsend (talk) 17:41, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. Could you explain what WASC is? Thanks, MathewTownsend (talk) 17:55, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Like I said, the Signpost includes many topics under its remit, both English and other languages, both Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, and both online and real-life activities. WASC is just an acronym for the Wikipedia Ambassador Steering Committee.--Pharos (talk) 01:20, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is it distributed to other languages? Wikipedia:Ambassadors/Steering Committee seems to cover only the US and Canada. And there is a dearth of material reported in the Signpost on the happening of that committee. MathewTownsend (talk) 01:33, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Videos, NC, GLAM, big project

Please check out Wikipedia:GLAM/smarthistory and consider signing up! After checking around, I see that you are the man on videos, but that videos have gone nowhere on Wikipedia for 2 years. This might be a chance to change that.

Short version: Smarthistory, part of Khan Academy, has 300+ completely non-profit educate-the-world-for-free, totally on point, directly parallel to our articles video, completely free (except with an NC license) expert art interpretation video. For the ones where we have a separate article on the artwork, and they have the equivalent video just on that artwork (the large majority), I don't want to bury the video under external links (usually the last place people look). Any idea of how to properly display?

Any help welcome.

Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

ASL annotation to video

Hi, Pharos!

I found meta:Requests for new languages/Wikipedia American Sign Language 2 and I wonder what the best way is to add an ASL annotation to File:Sextortionagent interview.ogg, a sound file about sextortion. Giving The Devil His Due

I don't know if you saw my response on the Sammy Davis Jr. talk page. His involvement with LeVay Satanism is not insignificant and sourceable by Davis' own autobiography. Growing up in the 70s it was a well-known urban legend that Davis was a Satanist; apparently this is still going on. How any of this relates to Poor Devil idk. Never heard Levay gave him an award, but there seems to be sufficient evidence that he did participate, or at the very least was present at meetings of the coven. Perhaps a blurb about this in the article with the WP:RS can set the record straight about this peculiar incident in his life. --Wlmg (talk) 19:19, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Survey on Wikimedia Chapters

Hi Pharos,

I would like to invite you and your chapter to take a part in a survey on WM Chapters. As I briefly explained there, it is an effort agreed during WCA meetings, taken to start gathering information about us and present it visibly. For the moment, information about chapters is scattered, and often missing - and even people wanting to highlight the chapters, build more bridges between them, create some benchmarks and share solutions are lacking data about all the local entities. Please help me in showing your Chapter! :)

First presentation will be given in Hong Kong. Further hopefully will come.

I know it is an additional work and the survey is far from being perfect, but someone needed to start it. Survey can be responded on a dedicated meta subpage or in other form if it is more suitable for the chapter. Your subpage is here.

Thanks for your help!

The Unvisited App

Hi, this is the guy that takes all the pictures... Here's the link on google play to the app I'm writing. It's purpose is to find articles with coordinates but that don't have pictures, and plan routes to get as many pictures as possible in a short time. It's still kind of a beta version, so I welcome feedback from anyone. I can also generate and email itineraries if anyone needs one.

Here's an example of a 6 mile Brooklyn walk generated by the app. Clicking he 'tour' link displays the tour in google maps.

John Phelan Faolin42 (talk) 22:28, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is the app region locked? Can't download it. Unsure where Google play users position (Hong Kong) or country associated with account (Sweden) but either way...
Also (of it doesn'talready exist) would it be possible to add a setting to change which language version of wikipedia it looks at? Lokal_Profil 18:30, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops. I didn't enable it for enough countries. I just went in and enabled it for all countries, but it might take a few hours to take effect. Maybe try again tomorrow?

And you're right. I should have a setting for which language version of wikipedia it looks at. I'll put that on my todo list. What language are you specifically interested in? (If it's annoying to Pharos, we can move the discussion to my talk page) Faolin42 (talk) 22:46, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks. Have now installed and tried it. Really nice, instantly found some tours around Hong Kong. Will try it out more in the following days. Specifically I was interested in the Swedish (sv.wiki) language since we often try to organise photo safaris. (Can shift to your talk page if Pharos wants). /Lokal_Profil 05:11, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. A user named Canoe1967 keeps reverting the Rick Remender article, despite the fact that a consensus discussion on the disputed portion of it is still ongoing, and despite the fact that he has been informed that this is edit warring, and is a blockable offense. I tried to protecting the article, but a complaint was made that I'm not an uninvolved admin. Can you protect the article for a couple of weeks, and if he reverts it again, block him if necessary? Thank you. Nightscream (talk) 16:59, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Canoe has now removed the photo from the article. Please block him. Nightscream (talk) 02:28, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please check

Please check my recent change at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes America ‎ (a bit different). I think I could approve the pending change myself - but I wanted to check with you (since it is a bit different!). The important thing to get across here is that this contest is from WP:NRHP, and essentially unrelated to the "Best photo" contest of WLM-US. It's just for fun and barnstars. Saint Peter's invite

Pharos, Thanks so much for the invitation. I took a look at the course description and I think that Jersey City, New Jersey would be an excellent model for this type of course. The city is large and old enough to have many events, sites, neighborhoods, people and other potential article subjects, it's covered in adequate detail that there is a foundation to build on, while leaving enough subjects that are available for expansion and creation. I'm based in Teaneck, but Jersey City is accessible and I would be happy to participate in any way that I can. Feel free to reach me via my talk page or by email. Thanks again for thinking of me. We are looking to make edits/improvements to the article on Maria Popova, a rising influence in the Communications space. Translations

Hi Pharos, My name is Sasha, I'm currently enrolled in Com 232 at CSI. I have decided to research and make a page for Joaquín Ibarra and had a few concerns about how to do this correctly. Joaquín Ibarra has a Spanish Wikipedia page which I would like to translate and add more information on. When translating a Wikipedia post how should I go about it and how do I do so without violating copyright? I would also like to know if I would have to transfer all of citations from the original page to the one I'm currently working on. Thanks in advance! Hello Pharos! My name is Elizabeth and I'm part of the Cornell University/Online Communities (Fall 2013) Wikipedia Education program. I'm working with my group members Shelby and Sarah to improve the page on Disney's Pocahontas film. We wanted to put some more media on the page, as well as validate the media that is already there. The talk page of Pocahontas mentions that the fair use explanation of the existing photos is missing. How can we make sure that the images are fair use as well as add some new ones? We have explored the Wikimedia Commons but cannot find any photos relating to the movie, only photos relating to the history figure Pocahontas. Any suggestions/tips?

Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:21, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New features for course pages

Several noticeable improvements to the EducationProgram extension (in addition to some small bug fixes) will go live on or around 2014-01-23:

Notifications

All participants in a course (students, instructors, volunteers) will receive Notifications whenever their course talk page is edited. Thus, editors can use course talk pages to send messages they want the whole class to be aware of, and the class participants are likely to see them.

Special:Contributions student notice

For users enrolled as students in courses that are active, a notice will appear at the top of Special:Contributions noting which course(s) they are enrolled in. This will make it easy for users who come across the work of student editors to find out that they are part of a course and identify other class participants.

Adding articles

Course instructors and volunteers will be able to assign articles to student editors, instead of all articles needing to be added by the student editors themselves.

Adding students

Instructors and volunteers will be able to add users as students in courses, instead of all student editors needing to enroll for themselves. This makes it easier to maintain complete lists of students, and also makes the extension more suitable for tracking participation in edit-a-thons, workshops and other collaborative projects beyond the Wikipedia Education Program.

If you have feedback about these new features, or other questions or ideas related to course pages, please let me know! --Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 18:14, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Education Program technical update, February 2014

We've started working on "editor campaigns", a system that we expect will eventually be able to replace our current Education Program extension (and be useful for many other purposes as well). The early work with that project will focus on a system for signup up new editors for editing campaigns (such as courses, but also edit-a-thons, Wiki Loves Monuments, etc.). Because of that, progress will be slow on the current course page system. However, we have several improvements that should be available within the next few weeks.

Anyone can edit the main text of course pages

As part of the effort to make course pages behave more like regular wiki pages, we've enabled editing of course pages by anyone. Users who currently have the right to edit courses will have access to all the fields (so that they can change the start/end dates, and change the enrollment token). Users who currently cannot edit courses will be able to edit only the "page text" portion. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Simplified course editing interface

We've considerably simplified the interface for editing course pages, removing the options to rename courses. Changing the title of a course would also move the course page, creating confusion and leading to a number of bugs. Several other parts of the course editing interface were not very useful, so we've removed them to make it easier on newcomers. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Additional Notifications

Two students participating in the Facebook Open Academy mentorship program are currently working on additional Notifications for course pages. For the first of these, users will be notified whenever someone else adds them to a course.

Once again, if you have feedback about these new features, or other questions or ideas related to course pages, please let me know!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 17:38, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

All the best,
James Hare

I have this course on my watchlist (not sure why, possibly I welcomed some of the students) and notice that a lot of text is accumulating on Education_Program_talk:CUNY,_LaGuardia_Community_College/The_Research_Paper:_Kindred_(Spring). It seems article-like but would take quite a bit of work to turn into an article. It's not going to be dumped into article space at the end of the course, is it? Education Program technical update, April 2014

Since the last update, development of the editor campaigns project has been continuing, and it's almost at the point that it will be useful to users running edit-a-thons and other non-course outreach events. (If you are planning such an event soon and would like to beta test it for tracking the contributions of newcomers, get it touch.) In the meantime, we've made a few small improvements and bug fixes to the Education Program extension:

Default course end date

The default end date for courses is now approximately six months in the future, instead of immediately. This will prevent the common problem where a user creates a new course page but does change the default dates, resulting in a course that is immediately considered "ended" and thus cannot be enrolled in.

Notifications when you get added to a course

Whenever a user gets added to a course by someone else, they will now receive a Notification.

Disabling individual student profiles

The student profile special page (Special:Student/Username, not to be confused with Special:Students) is a page that lists the courses a student editor is enrolled in, and is also supposed to list the articles that user is working on. However, the list of articles can include incorrect data in cases where an instructor or volunteer assigned the articles to the student editor. These profiles are being removed from the extension altogether. This change should go into effect Thursday, May 1. (Logs are still available to find out which courses a user is enrolled in.)

Article edit notifications for students coming soon

A nearly complete patch from Facebook Open Academy student Jeff Lloyd will add a new type of Notification: students will be alerted to edits made by others to the article(s) they are assigned (as well as the corresponding talk pages). Expect to see this feature within the next several weeks.

Duplicate courses and API deletion

Bugs in the course page creation process (now fixed) led in some cases to duplicate listings for the same course at Special:Courses. This happens when the same course page had two (or more) different course ID numbers. It is possible to clean up such duplicate entries using by making calls to the API. I've documented this process and written a Python script for it.

If you have feedback about these changes, or other questions or ideas related to course pages, please let Anna Koval or me know!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 19:23, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Category:National questions

Is Category:National questions really a good category? It doesn't seem like any of these disputes necessarily have anything to do with each other other than their name - and thus WP:SHAREDNAME would apply. It's not really a "defining characteristic." I'm tempted to nominate it for deletion at CFD, but maybe I'm missing something? SnowFire (talk) 21:31, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Landowners / Peasants

Actually, I believe you'll find that "landowners" and "peasants" are not as opposite as they might seem. A "peasant" was typically an agricultural worker occupying a parcel of land and working it themselves. Often, a peasant had some sort of property right to the land they occupied. This right might not have been as absolute as is typical, say, of the US where freehold tenure is the norm; they might, for example, hold a long-term lease from a local or regional magnate. This lease might be subject to expiration at fixed periods, or upon the death of the occupant, or it might by law or custom be inherited within a family. The tenure could be quite valuable in economic terms, but was often inalienable (just as noble estates were often inalienable). Conversely, in early modern Eastern Europe a peasant might also inherit obligations, e.g. to live upon and work the property even if they preferred not to. Further confusing matters is that early modern farmers were often very cash poor even when prosperous; they might effectively control a good deal of productive land, they might eat well in a time when many did not, but they still would have little or no money. Hi Pharos

Don't mean to be brusque or anything but Timeline of the far future is a featured list and any new additions to it really need to be cited. I'm sure you can find sources for your info; after all, finding sources is your thing, isn't it? Serendipodous 10:01, 12 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. This is totally a "gift horse, open wide and say aah" moment, but I was wondering, could you have a look at this list? It's all the material from an earlier version of this article that I haven't been able to find sources for. I'm not sure if any of it will be all that useful to be honest; the one sourced Unix timecode overflow was already taken down from this page on the admittedly fair assumption that we probably won't still be using Unix, or even seconds, in 292 billion years. As for the star occultations, I personally don't think they're that relevant, but I am interested in the other things. Please let me know if you find anything. Thanks. Serendipodous 16:36, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Original Barnstar
OK, it's about time to give you a barnstar; I was gonna wait until you were done but you seem to be on a roll so who am I to postpone? Actually it's funny; I've been thinking for years that Timeline of the far future could really do with your research skills, and lo and behold, here you are. And yes, pretty much every hole I've been wishing I could plug in the list has now been plugged. While the list is already featured, I an certain your additions will provide fodder for Reddit threads for years to come :-) Serendipodous 12:26, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Pharos, you deserve so much credit for taking on the job of trying to "salvage" an intellectual and moral wreck, the so-called "Jews & Communism" article, by reducing its toxicity and trying to bring normalcy, historical context and true WP:NPOV to this tough topic, all under the most harrowing circumstances. Greg Kohs and WikiConference USA

Dear Pharos: Is this report accurate: WikiConference USA bans critic from open meeting? If it is accurate do you know if a response from the conference organizers is forthcoming? I won't spend time explaining exactly how upsetting this is and how very bad it looks on its face until the accuracy of the report is confirmed. It looks really bad, though, and I really hope there's a plausible explanation. Note that I'm not asking about the rejection of Kohs's presentation, but only about the allegation that he was barred from an event touted as "open to all participants, regardless of previous level of involvement with Wikipedia or the Wikimedia projects. We welcome the curious, the skeptical, and others wishing to engage in meaningful conversation about the Wikimedia movement in the United States, free culture and digital rights, advocacy and outreach, community building, and technology." I posted the same question on Newyorkbrad's talk page, but he declined to respond substantively. I am also leaving it on the talk pages of the other conference organizers.alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 19:18, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mass message

Please make sure to include a timestamp at the end of messages sent by mass message so that archiving bots do not skip those sections. Thanks, --Glaisher [talk] 18:10, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, my apologies. It's a bit non-intuitive to leave the timestamp with massmessage, but I'll do this for the next one for the Wiknic.--Pharos (talk) 18:39, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. If you would like to sign up for the picnic, you can do so here. When signing up, say what you’re going to bring!

July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

We hope to see you at our upcoming events!

Best,

James Hare

Repeated addition of material apparently failing WP:V

I'm concerned about your re-addition of material to the History of the Jews in Nepal article that I have not been able to verify, and for which you have not reponded to Talk page queries regarding the specifics, with respect to some of which I have provided links demonstrating no hits, no emphasis, etc. Note that Nishidani, who is more knowledgeable in this field than I, has recently looked at some of the previous additions of material and concurred that it didn't belong in the article, was fringe, etc.

On the Talk page you reiterated mention of a "Jewish Karim" in a source, and since I haven't found that, please specify the source and the page number, or self-revert the re-addition of that material. Without a "Jewish Karim", it should be apparent that there would be no notable "historic trade routes" between Nepal, as the entire section would rest on a note recorded by a single Jewish merchant based in Cairo in the eleventh century.

The distinction between the Old and New Testament versions of spikenard also would seem to be relevant, as the issue regarding the plant from the Himalayas. Please respond to these queries on the article talk page. --Ubikwit 連絡 見学/迷惑 08:39, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I.e., where in the Geniza document does the Jewish merchant mention that his spikenard came from 'Nepal'? Horace writing decades before A.D. wrote of spikenard, but this doesn't mean there was a Roman connection with Nepal.Nishidani (talk) 09:58, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Pharos, sorry I didn't reply to your emails lately, I have been busy. And about the article military history of Bangladesh, I don't think that is necessary, they already have one. But I am trying to work on this History of Bangladesh under British rule. Nayways, and about the second message you gave me I will try to get as bilingual people for future meetups. Thanks!

Wikimania 2014

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller and video producer for the Wikimedia Foundation. I'll be looking to capture stories about Wikimedians at Wikimania in London in a week. Here is an example of the kind of thing that I'm aiming to do. I saw that you're attending Wikimania and I was wondering if you might have some time to talk about your work on Wikimedia projects. Anyway let me know if you are interested, I'll be at Wikimania from the 6th-10th of August and would need maybe 30 minutes of your time. I can answer any questions you may have. I’m best reached at vgrigas(at)wikimedia.org

Thanks!

Help with wikipedia page

Hi, my name is Paul and I am administrator for Indiggo Twins website: http://www.indiggotwins.com. Indiggo are identical twin professional actresses, singers, writers, composers signed with Sony BMG and Imagem USA, featured and credited on Jay-Z & Kanye' West's 4 times Grammy award-winning album Watch The Throne, respectively on "Murder To Excellence". I am writing to you to kindly ask of you to help contribute to the Indiggo wikipedia page, to establish a neutral and just point of view of the "America's Got Talent" section as fans who have followed Indiggo's growth and development have notified me that the Indiggo wikipedia page has been vandalized. There are several racist, false and malicious comments regarding Indiggo's performances on America's Got Talent, respectively on the New York audition, that are allowed on the Indiggo wikipedia page and that harm Indiggo's image. I have also been notified that whenever their fans have tried to bring other arguments or write other AGT judges' comments they were blocked and threatened by users from Great Britain who are favoring artists who they think they vie with the Indiggo Twins. Judge Sharon Osbourne has praised the twins and the audience rooted for Indiggo and cheered for them to be approved to the next stage of Las Vegas callbacks. Yet, whenever someone has tried to bring these actual arguments, they were blocked. The ones who vandalize wrote that judge Piers Morgan said the twins are the worst singers and dancers in the competition on the NY audition. He hasn't said that, he actually said that "I started to enjoy your performance" and he approved the pair to go to the next stages, to top 40. Nevertheless, judges' comments should not be posted at all and only facts should be admitted on a serious and classy encyclopedia as wikipedia. I hope to hear from you soon and to receive your help. I do believe in justice and that artists' hard work and growth should be respected and protected. Many thanks, Paul Indiggo7777 (talk) 02:39, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Westchester Meeting 24 August Local transport

I don't know whether I will have car availability, but plan to attend in any event. Looking at the train and bus schedules, there are few buses on Beeline route 14 on Sunday. If folks will be coming by train, you might want to offer pickup at the stations in time for participants to get there close to the start. I don't know whether anyone would take you up on the offer, but it might reduce a barrier to attendance. I have inserted some schedule info on the meeting page. DCDuring (talk) 18:40, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Pharos. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Asian Americans in New York City".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Asian Americans in New York City}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save page", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. HasteurBot (talk) 04:00, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

Proposed deletion of Conjectural portrait

The article Conjectural portrait has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced article fails WP:NEO, no significant coverage in WP:RS about this term

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Account creator rights - question

I see you granted me Account Creator Rights, probably because of the outreach events I assist at. I understand the need for it, due to the limit on account creation in some places. I looked at the related WP page, but it wasn't terribly helpful for me - a lot of technical and policy stuff related to problematic scenarios. I was hoping you could provide me with a quick summary of what I should do if and when the account creation limit is reached. Do I just go to the Special page for creating accounts, and do it myself while logged in? Cheers, AstroCog (talk) 23:26, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, just stay logged in as yourself, and go to Special:CreateAccount.--Pharos (talk) 23:30, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 21:58, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Error in invitation?

Hi Pharos, I just got your invitation to Wikipedia Day 2015, but it looks like there's a typo... It says the event is happening from 10:00pm - 9:00 pm. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks! nycdi (talk) 04:07, 10 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, my mistake! The start time is of course 10am, and hopefully the error is a relatively obvious one that people will find corrected on the main meetup page.--Pharos (talk) 17:06, 10 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Interested in asking some questions re: NYPD Wikipedia editing

Hey Pharos,

I'm a journalist looking to get some comments from Wikimedia commenters in NYC on the NYPD edits to Wikipedia that were released by Capital New York. I reached out because I saw that you were the president of the NYC Wikipedia Meetup group. Would it be possible to have a talk?

Thanks so much!

--Thencarolsaid (talk) 18:16, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Account creators?

Pharos,

Are you giving out account creator to anyone who posts at Wikipedia:ArtAndFeminism/AccountCreator? Several users have been processed who appear to have no wiki-experience, and in some cases requesting this advanced permission was their only edit. Are you personally managing these editors and removing when special events are over? I started removing a few who appeared to be related to events that were over, but wanted to check in with you as a touchpoint to see what was going on. Thanks! — xaosflux Talk 04:29, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

CUNY?

I haven't heard from CUNY about their ideas for Beginners' Wiki-Editing on Wikipedia Day. (See User_talk:RoyGoldsmith#Wikipedia Day open space session.) I really wanted to talk to them before the meeting. In the worst case, I will be at Barnard Hall around 9 o'clock tomorrow. --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 18:46, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Pharos! Just wanted to express my thanks for everything you did yesterday to make WikiDay such a great experience, especially for a newbie like me! Hope to see you again soon, and very best wishes! Amy E Hughes (talk) 22:00, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fashion Institute of Technology class

Hello!

Just a quick note to ask about this course: Template:Course link. Is this something that WikiEdu can provide support for?

Thanks! (And thanks again for organizing what seemed like a very successful Wikipedia Day -- I know that at least for me it was a great experience). --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:14, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I plan to help a bit myself (going there Wed morning), but any assistance from you and WikiEdu staff would be welcome as well. And it was great to have you at Wikipedia Day, you should always consider yourself a most welcome part of the NYC community.--Pharos (talk) 17:47, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like only the description has been added thus far. Maybe it's a good time to have the instructor go through the assignment design wizard if the assignment is compatible? Thanks. --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:32, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, the wizard was actually not working at the time this was set up (Sage informs me the webhost went down for the first time!), so this was created the old-fashioned way, and I'm not sure it makes sense to recreate the whole page, now that the instuctors and students are already a part of it. Still, I'm going to work with them step-by-step through the process of adding the timeline, etc, by the manual process, and this should get the same end result.--Pharos (talk) 16:16, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! Sorry to hear that. Maybe I misunderstand, but the Wizard doesn't actually replace the course page -- it would just replace the paragraph course description that's there. Up to you, of course. Let me know if I can do anything to help out. --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:47, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Contacts in NC?

Hi Richard,

Did you end up finding anyone to help out at that edit-a-thon in NC? I just got a message from someone at UNC who's organizing one. We haven't talked much yet, but if you happened to find someone enthusiastic about such things, I'd like to connect them. Thanks. --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:01, 31 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Black Visual Arts

Hi, Richard. At The Studio Museum in Harlem editathon, the organizers were looking for a way to organize ongoing discussions and lists of articles that need work, so I suggested a Wikiproject. I'll try to make a page for it, but I may ask you for help when I put up a draft of it. -- Ssilvers (talk) 15:30, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Instead of making a whole new project, I created this subpage, which I think will be simpler. Would you please review it and see if you can fix the coding on the cats, etc? Wikipedia:WikiProject African diaspora/Visual arts. Please delete anything that you don't think will be helpful to the Black visual arts contributors. Thanks for any help! -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:05, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ssilvers: Looks like a good start; though I couldn't figure out right now how to add the task force functionality to {{WikiProject African diaspora}} (and the categories depend on that), I've added a link to this from Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/AfroCrowd/Lists of Articles, part of the larger NYC-based initiative that helped organize this event.--Pharos (talk) 15:59, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for taking a look. If you can find someone who is good with the technical stuff, would you ask them please to see if they can fix the functionality/categories? Thanks very much! -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:27, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ssilvers: I think I've figured out the tech stuff, modifying {{WikiProject African diaspora}} and adding the task force sub-banner to Talk:George Herriman, though I haven't set up all the categories yet.--Pharos (talk) 22:59, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Meetup

Hi again,

I'll email you in the next few days about the possibility of another August event in Westchester; in the meantime I wanted to let you know that one of the attendees of today's event approached me just before I left, asking for the deletion of Dynamism of a Speeding Horse Houses as a misspelling of Dynamism of a Speeding Horse + Houses. Let me know if you can do that. Thank you!--ɱ (talk · vbm) 03:15, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

: I just redirected the incorrect title to the correct one; I don't like to use administrative tools when unnecessary, and in this case the original history of their contribution to the article is preserved. Let me know about Westchester :)--Pharos (talk) 16:39, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. I've been in contact with the historical society; they'll probably be glad to host it and we'll try to get the library on board too. I'll let you know when I have more information.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 01:45, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!

  • What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
  • When? June 2015
  • How can you help?
1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing!

Five minutes to help make WikiProjects better

Hello!

First, on behalf of WikiProject X, thank you for trying out the WikiProject X pilot projects. I would like to get some anonymous feedback from you on your experience using the new WikiProject layout and tools. This way, we will know what we did right, and if we did something horribly wrong, we can try to fix it. This feedback won't be associated with your username, so please be completely honest. We are determined to improve the experience of Wikipedians, and your feedback helps us with that. (You are also welcome to leave non-anonymous feedback at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject X.)

Please complete the survey here. The survey has two parts: the first part asks for your username, while the second part contains the survey questions. These two parts are stored separately, so your username will not be associated with your feedback. There are only nine questions and it should not take very long to complete. Once you complete the survey I will leave a handwritten note on your talk page as a token of my appreciation.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Harej (talk) 17:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Just sending a reminder to complete the survey linked above. (This is the only reminder I'll send, I promise.) Let me know on my talk page if you have any questions. Thank you!!! Harej (talk) 22:13, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Grants:IEG/Wikipedia likes Galactic Exploration for Posterity 2015

Dear Fellow Wikipedians,

I JethroBT (WMF) suggested that I consult with fellow Wikipedians to get feedback and help to improve my idea about "As an unparalleled way to raise awareness of the Wikimedia projects, I propose to create a tremendous media opportunity presented by launching Wikipedia via space travel."

Please see the idea at meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Wikipedia_likes_Galactic_Exploration_for_Posterity_2015. Please post your suggestions on the talk page and please feel free to edit the idea and join the project.

Thank you for your time and attention in this matter. I appreciate it.

My best regards, Geraldshields11 (talk) 21:00, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry

So sorry for blanking the page on the Women's edit-a-thon. I was intending to delete the announcement from my own talk page, and wasn't where I thought I was. Oh, and not that I'm not interested, but I live in MD and not MA, and just returned from MS, so won't be going to MA or ME until next April.Sarnold17 (talk) 21:36, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for

Women in architecture lists

Pharos, I realize you might have some priorities for your physical edtathons but I have been extremely confused by the changes you have been making to the list of red-linked women architects. I spent a considerable amount of time yesterday tidying up your additions only to see that you overruled everything I had been doing. The list you included from Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation was misleading as it not only contained numerous misspellings but many of the red-linked names on the list were in fact already included in articles. I made a number of redirects and similar adjustments, researched each of the remaining names carefully and added at least one link for guidance. I don't think it is in our contributors' interest to put them through the same trouble as I experienced. Please leave the list as it now appears on the editathon page. Remember people are participating from all over the world. When you reply, please either ping me or leave a message on my talk page. I realize we are both working for the same good cause and I am sure we can collaborate effectively for all concerned.--Ipigott (talk) 09:08, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cambridge, MA edit-a-thon

Hi Pharos, I appreciate the invite and wish I could make it, but I don't live in the States any longer. I tried to find where I had subscribed to the list but couldn't, being a bit of a dolt that way. Can you point me to where I can unsubscribe? Thanks, Kafka Liz (talk) 08:18, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wednesday October 28, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our evening "WikiWednesday" salon and knowledge-sharing workshop by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan.

This month, we will also host a Newcomer's Wiki Workshop for those getting started on the encyclopedia project!

We will also include a look at our annual plan and budget ideas, to see if the chapter is able to fiscally sponsor more ongoing projects tied to our core mission of expanding and diversifying free knowledge.

We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects. We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming editathons, and other outreach activities.

After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!

7:00pm - 9:00 pm at Babycastles, 137 West 14th Street

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 17:45, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
