Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it after the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should:
    • not be marked as stubs;
    • contain more than 1,500 characters (around 1.5 kilobytes) in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables);
    • cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
    • be no more than five days old (unless it had fewer than 1,500 characters, and has been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days).
  • Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
  • Suggested facts should be:
    • interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    • short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters),
    • neutral, and
    • definite facts that are mentioned in the article.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
    • attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
    • already in the article; and
    • relevant to the article.
  • Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have non-stub text that brings out interesting and relational facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|May 17}} Thanks, ~~~~

  • ...that The Lady with a Fan (pictured) is an original painting of a woman with a black lace veil on her head, a square lace collar, and a yellow dress with black stripes, by the renowned court painter, Diego Velasquez, of Spain? - (Self-nom) Dragonbite 01:04, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

*...that the Royal Navy submarine HMS Storm (P233) (pictured) was the first submarine in World War II to be commanded by a British officer from the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve? • 205 character hook/suggested fact. See #Suggestions. As I understand the rewritten rules, anything over 200 characters is too many. Art LaPella 21:39, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The guidance is that it should be 'fewer than about 200 characters'. So 5 characters too many is probably OK. Kim Dent-Brown (Talk to me) 08:16, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(OR) ...that the Priestley Riots were the first urban riots outside of London in eighteenth-century Britain? Awadewit | talk 23:55, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This second fact doesn't seem to fit the information in the article, which mentions several previous urban riots in eighteenth century Birmingham. Warofdreams talk 03:09, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
See the sourced statement in the lead. Those other riots are not considered "urban riots" since Birmingham was so small at the time (it may also have something to do with who participated - if it was farmers and laborers from the surrounding area, that makes it a rural riot, not an urban riot). It is not until Birmingham becomes an urban center that it can have urban riots. Awadewit | talk 05:45, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. See here. Awadewit | talk 18:27, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • changed "evacuation" to "abandonment" (in article too); more accurately describes historical outcome. Horologium t-c 17:02, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that Vancouver police Chief Jamie Graham is being investigated for allegedly failing to cooperate with an investigation of his department?
or alternatively, ...that Chief Constable Jamie Graham has been described by his officers as the best chief of police Vancouver has ever had?

(self-nom) Stevecudmore 23:28, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I prefer the first if we have to use this one. While many police chiefs have been investigated, and many have been accused of failing to cooperate with investigations, it may be unusual for them to be investigated for that by itself. As for the other, every big-city police chief has supporters and detractors within their department, and it's not uncommon that they would express such support or opposition in superlative terms. Daniel Case 04:38, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, how about ...*...that Vancouver police Chief Jamie Graham apologized for leaving a paper target riddled with bullet holes on the desk of the city manager, his boss, as a joke? (You can't say that about every big-city police chief!) Stevecudmore 19:04, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    • OR ...that female Rufous Whistler birds, after building a nest from twigs, vines and grass, attach it to tree branches using spider web silk? Anonymous DissidentTalk 07:53, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Prefer the second hook, but the article could do with an expansion. Yomanganitalk 16:55, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • Actually, the bird couldn't possibly attach its nest to a tree branch AFTER building it! Perhaps a better way of wording this would be: "...that female Rufous Whistlers attach their nests to tree branches with the help of strands from spider webs?" Saying Rufous Whistler birds is also not correct! MeegsC | Talk 22:56, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have removed "the" from before "Glomeris marginata"; definite articles are not used with binomial names. --Stemonitis 05:55, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The second version of this hook/suggested fact has 236 characters. See #Suggestions. It no longer says "about 200 characters", so I interpret that to mean that 201 is too many. Art LaPella 05:25, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • ...that a French nobleman, Marquis de Rays, sent four expeditions in the late 19th century to an imaginary majestic colony called New France in present day Papua New Guinea, the third of which, simply referred to as the de Rays Expedition saw 123 Italian settlers perish of disease and famine? • I don't like that lead-in anymore anyway - its too POV. The citation is in the lead of the article though. I would change the DYK statement to the following:
...that Logan Fontenelle, a mixed blood chief of the Omaha, was killed by a marauding band of Brulé and Arapaho after only three years of leading the tribe? – Freechild (BoomCha) 03:29, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I hate to be the PC police, but "mixed blood" and "marauding band" are problematic, legacies of old racial attitudes. (By the way, the answer to the question of "who regards him as the last great chief?" is, according to your 19th century source, the people who saw it as their job to "civilize" the Indians. Americans of the era thought highly of chiefs who were willing to sign away land. You must contextualize 19th century sources, which the article as yet does not do. I have other concerns about the article--although I don't know anything about the Omaha, the claim that "he maintained absolute control over the Omaha" sounds bogus to me. The article is a good start; I urge you to expand it with recent scholarship.) "Mixed blood" is still used and perhaps okay; "synethic" is the term now used by many scholars, though it's probably too obscure for the main page. I'd just leave his ethnicity out of the hook, and say that he was a chief killed in a skirmish with Brulés and Arapahos. Or better yet, how about this hook:

Hook is strange: scientific name linked in Thrush, common name linked in Flycatcher. Any reason for that? Yomanganitalk 17:03, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it means that scientists first thought it was a thrush, then thought it was a flycatcher, then realized it was neither! :) MeegsC | Talk 22:50, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I got that. I meant the formatting was strange. An alternative is probably a better route: ...that the Yellow-tufted Honeyeater of Eastern Australia was initially described as a thrush (Turdus) or a flycatcher (Muscicapa), though related to neither?
