: This is not an encyclopedic article as it does not present a balanced perspective. No reputable medical organisation endorses this type of attempt to "change" sexuality, the evidence in the scientific and medical literature is conclusive about the ineffectiveness of these sorts of programs, and the damage done by conversion therapy is well documented. I will post a request at the LGBT WikiProject for editors to balance the article, and maybe it can be turned into something balanced. As for the hook, it does a dis-service to genuine and effectie twelve step programs like AA and NA to compare them with conversion therapy and linking them to the ex-gay movement. Instructions

Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the bottom. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination. Every approved hook will appear on the main page.

DYK criteria

Official criteria: DYK rules and additional guidelines
Unofficial Guide: Learning DYK

How to list a new nomination

For a simplified version of these instructions, see User:Rjanag/Quick DYK.
For a step-by-step guide to filling out the
NewDYKnom template, see Template:NewDYKnomination/guide.

Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

  1. Nom without image:
  2. Nom with image:
To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook: |article2= |article3= |article4= | (etc)
To include more than one author: |author2= |author3= | (etc)
To include alternate hooks: |ALT1= |ALT2= | (etc)
    To add a comment: |comment=
To add the article you reviewed: |reviewed=

Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.

An example of how to use the template is given below. Don't forget to fill out the rollover text, so people know what the image is of! Full details are at NewDYKnom:

  • Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
  • When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use to notify them. Usage:

How to review a nomination

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets all the DYK criteria (long enough, new enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, or may suggest new hooks. For a more detailed discussion of the DYK rules and review process see the additional rules.

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or note that there is an issue with the article or hook, please use the following symbols to point the issues out:

Symbol Code DYK Ready? Description
Yes No problems, ready for DYK
Yes Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith
Query DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with
Maybe DYK eligibility requires additional work. Notify nominator with
No Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible

Please consider using on the nominator's talk page, in case they do not notice that there is an issue.

Backlogged?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until an editor reviews it. Since editors are encouraged to review the oldest submissions first (so that those hooks don't grow stale), it may take several days until your submission is reviewed. In the meantime, please consider reviewing another submission (not your own) to help reduce the backlog (see instructions above).

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Cooks Source infringement controversy

Created/expanded by Hagcel (talk), Jokestress (talk). Nominated by Secret Saturdays (talk) at 00:39, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • The source says it "may well become a digital textbook example of how not to respond to grievances in the internet age" (my emphasis), not that it is such an example. I know it's a small distinction, but I think it's important, especially for a claim that would go on the Main Page. cmadler (talk) 13:01, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with cmadler. Just like the omission of a single word from the Wicked Bible created a new and unintended commandment, stripping the word "may" from the cited source has significantly changed the sourced facts. --Allen3 talk 13:15, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Updated fact and article per request. Jokestress (talk) 15:07, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's not exactly the best hook in the world. It's one person's opinion about what may come to pass, and provides no basis for the conclusion. That's not really a fact, per se. Do you have an actual fact that you can use as a hook? Uncle G (talk) 01:23, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Åland Museum, Åland Maritime Museum

Pommern a three-masted, square-rigged sailing ship moored next to a wooden quay with a low white building

Created by Dr. Blofeld (talk), Nvvchar (talk). Self nom at 10:32, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I like the first half of the hook for Åland Museum, but the second half for Åland Maritime Museum is somewhat of a letdown -- having a ship from 1903 is not that special. How about some mention of the old ship winning the Great Grain Races twice, before becoming a museum ship, etc.? --PFHLai (talk) 17:03, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you do not like the hook, please change it youself. I really haven't got time for faffing about with hooks. 1903 was not supposed to be special, the fact that the musuem has a full-sized ship is of note.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:33, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd split up the hook into two:

Pommern a three-masted, square-rigged sailing ship moored next to a wooden quay with a low white building

Confederazione dei Sindacati Unici Classisti del Territorio libero di Trieste

Created by Soman (talk). Self nom at 00:30, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Since when are translations not counted as part of the prose? It is not mentioned neither in WP:DYK nor Wikipedia:Did_you_know/Additional_rules#Additional_article_length_rules. --Soman (talk) 05:07, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • The rules state: "In practice, articles longer than 1,500 characters may still be rejected as too short, at the discretion of the selecting reviewers and administrators." - PM800 (talk) 05:49, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • On the other hand, this is probably the sole Titoist union in the world ever to exist outside of Yugoslavia (which, if it could be sourced, would have made a great DYK hook) and thus a quite unique political phenomenon. --Soman (talk) 20:34, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it's too short. SmartSE (talk) 11:07, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Willian Costa/Lincon de Sa

Created by Paralympiakos (talk). Self nom at 10:40, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unless this guy has a hard time finding opponents in his weight class, this is a boring hook. --PFHLai (talk) 09:35, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
He does, considering he is 115lbs. I would've thought that the idea of someone competing at that weight would be curious. The below is nonsense. Paralympiakos (talk) 10:56, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. With over 20 DYKs (including 15 in September), the nom needs to raise his game in the new environment. Johnbod (talk) 09:44, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The fight record in the article suggests that this guy has been competing regularly in Shooto. How about a hook about him competing for an inaugural Shooto title next month? I'd suggest making it a double hook with a bio for his scheduled opponent. Please do it quickly before this article gets too old for DYK. --PFHLai (talk) 11:34, 13 November 2010 (UTC) Never mind about the double hook if the other guy is not Wiki-worthy. I'm just trying to avoid incoming boring hooks. Good hooky materials are hard to come by. --PFHLai (talk) 12:09, 13 November 2010 (UTC) But I do suggest a different hook. The current hook will more likely get readers to click on strawweight than the DYK article. --PFHLai (talk) 15:31, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But let's say I do an article for Lincon de Sa (his upcoming opponent), how is that hook any different to the one at the very top by myself? Paralympiakos (talk) 23:52, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Even without de Sa, IMO, the hook about an inaugural Shooto title next month carries some uniqueness. If de Sa gets in the same hook, you don't need to think about a new hook for de Sa's article, which I assume you would be writing up and nominating for DYK. If you are indeed making a double-hook nomination, then we would be only reviewing one hook instead of two.
Now back to the original hook, sorry, it's just too straightforward, like saying a 6-year-old is supposed to attend Grade 1, or someone who grew up in France is supposed to speak some French. A smaller-sized person is supposed to fight in a lighter-weighted class. So? What's so special? Now if this is the guy who started the weight class, or a long-time champ in the weight class, or if he is actually 90-lb and fighting much larger opponents, then you've got something interesting to make a hook, methinks. Right now, all you're saying is that he is a small guy amongst fighters, and that's it. --PFHLai (talk) 06:13, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, personally I'd say I'm closer to saying "Look, here's this guy that fights at a freakish weight class that barely anyone has heard of. Take a look" Paralympiakos (talk) 15:56, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
ALT 1 ... that Michael Willian Costa and Lincon de Sa will face off for the inaugural Shooto South American 115lb Championship?
Is this better then? Paralympiakos (talk) 16:46, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeap. Thank you. I wouldn't say "will", as this would be crystalballing. It's not as much as a sure thing as the sun will rise in the east tomorrow.... How about:
ALT 2 ... that strawweight mixed martial arts fighters Michael Willian Costa and Lincon de Sa are scheduled to face off for the inaugural Shooto South American Championship held in Brazil next month?
Not sure if mentioning "for their weight class" near the end of the hook would be redundant. Hope this helps. --PFHLai (talk) 01:11, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is relevant, because there are more than one Shooto blah blah titles. There's one for each weight class, with strawweight being the new one. Paralympiakos (talk) 11:02, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Both articles state "mostly notably for Shooto." which doesn't make sense. I'm afraid I can't correct it myself since I don't know what it is trying to say. Other than that, I think they're good to go. SmartSE (talk) 11:13, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Will need a lot of work to bring it up to DYK standards. I've checked the references and very little of what is in the lead, is actually covered in the references provided and there are other sentences that are also not backed up by references. Kanimozhi (film)

5x expanded by Universal Hero (talk). Self nom at 23:01, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • the film is yet to release - so there's no plot as of yet. Hmmm, you're probably right - "released" seems a term generic to Indian film launches. I've reworded a bit - basically, he received the first copy - which is often implied as "releasing the audio - as he was the main guest of honour". Universal Hero (talk) 16:38, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we can't have an article about the movie and not say what the movie is about, can we? --PFHLai (talk) 06:25, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Li Gang incident

Created by Comte0 (talk). Self nom at 15:23, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think it's good: the link on criminal refers to the hitting and killing, and the second part of the hook is the reason why he yelled. I then feel your version to be somewhat too long. Some words might be added about the driver being drunk, but he is actually charged for criminal negligence. Regards, Comte0 (talk) 08:44, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • This article seems to contain some close paraphrasing or borderline plagiarism. For example:
  • Source: "the other, 19, suffered a fractured left leg and is in stable condition"
Article: "The other, Zhang Jingjing, 19, suffered a fractured left leg and was left in stable condition"
  • Source: "Li Gang wept in an apology during an interview with China Central Television on Oct. 21. Li Qiming also apologized in a video released on Oct. 22."
Article: "Li Gang wept in an apology during an interview with China Central Television on 21 October. Li Qiming also apologized in a video released on 22 October"
  • Source: "The director asked lawyer Zhang Kai to terminate his representation in this case because the law firm has been cautioned by Beijing Bureau of Justice"
Article: "On November 1, Zhang Kai . . . was asked to terminate his representation in this case because the law firm has been cautioned by Beijing Bureau of Justice"
  • Regardless of copyright laws, the DYK rules don't really allow it, and I recall seeing something similar on a WP policy page somewhere. Also, the Wikipedia servers are located in Florida, and not France; hence French laws don't apply to Wikipedia. I could paraphrase them if you like. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 08:52, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

William Dennison Clark

  • ... that William Dennison Clark (pictured), whose "wretched blunder" in 1905 ended Michigan's 56-game unbeaten streak in football, killed himself 27 years later, reportedly expressing the hope to atone for his error?

Created/expanded by Cbl62 (talk). Self nom at 06:58, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I dunno about this one; the statement "Some newspaper accounts reported at the time that his letter also expressed hope that his "final play" would atone for his error at Marshall Field" seems a bit... iffy. It feels very wrong to attribute his suicide solely to an athletic error 27 years earlier. DS (talk) 14:48, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • That's what was reported by the Journal of Sports History in a historical account: "A suicide note to his wife reportedly hoped that his 'final play' would be of some benefit in atoning for his error at Marshall Field."[1] This was also reported at the time of the suicide in at least a couple major newspapers. If you read the full article, it's clear the error haunted him for the rest of his life. Sure, there were undoubtedly other issues that contributed to the suicide, but the hook accurately recounts what has been reported in historical and contemporaneous accounts. To avoid any misinformation, I've inserted "reportedly" in the hook. Cbl62 (talk) 06:48, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yeah, I guess so; however, that long paragraph on his wife is still there, and that's just cheating. Minus that, there are 1,744 characters of prose. But that's not all. You also included irrelevant clauses like "an honor named for the first president of Texas Tech" and "an authority on the history of Texas"; these are describing other people, not Kuethe. "With his doctorate in hand" and "published by the American Council of Learned Societies" are also superfluous. You spelled out his children's names even though they all have the same last name. I just think you're trying too hard. - PM800 (talk) 18:23, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stark's Knob

5x expanded by Ktr101 (talk). Self nom at 04:30, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've been looking into the sources cited in the article and also scientific papers about this site, and I'm not convinced that the first hook is exactly true. Additionally, the article doesn't mention the 60 mile distance from the Connecticut River Valley. As for ALT1, I scrossed out the upthrust part because Stark's Knob is not an upthrust; the rest of the hook is sort of supported by sources (if you consider gastropod fossils to be "snails" and pillow lava to be "pillows") but I think it's excessively cute and deceptive. I think there's an interesting and non-deceptive hook to be extracted from this article, but I don't yet know what it is going to be. --Orlady (talk) 01:29, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you that the second one sounds weird because it sounds like something that would be appropriate on an April Fools Day run. If nothing else appears boosting my statement anytime soon, I can whip up another hook. I will though ax the mile thing as it is a bit of unintentional original research on my part. Kevin Rutherford (talk)
:Lay is transitive: that means it requires an object. Corrected to lies--Wetman (talk) 05:42, 7 November 2010 (UTC)`[reply]
  • An upthrust is not a structure, it's a process, in this case the process that has moved these rocks from below sea level to high on land, so I've removed the strikeout. And individual structures within a marine lava are called "pillows", there's no "consider" about it. Just IMO Orlady, I think you need to relax a bit on the hooks - these are the equivalent of newspaper headlines to pique people's interest and get them to click through and read a shiny new article on a subject they would normally not look at. A "dry" hook like the original might showcase the article to 2000 people, something more eyecatching might get 10,000 or 20,000. I think Ktr101's hard work deserves to be showcased to as many people as possible, and that means using common names like "snails" in the hook, if people care about the detail as much as you do, the article will clarify that the term is referring to Ordovician fossils. However I note that the reference talks about snails rather than gastropods, Orlady you really shouldn't make things up that aren't in the references.... <g> Ktr101 - quirky hooks aren't just for April Fools, WP:DYK/A J7 positively encourages a quirky in every DYK run but now you mention it, ALT1 might well be suitable for the kudos of a April Fool DYK. This is a good thing. Le Deluge (talk) 10:16, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • You will note that I said that I have been reading scientific publications about Stark's knob, with the intent of adding additional sources to the article. The "geology" fact sheet that is cited in the article appears to have been written by someone (probably a professional PR person) who didn't fully understand the topic; I say that because it doesn't make sense from a technical perspective. As for "upthrust," you will not find the term "upthrust" in the Wikipedia articles thrust fault and thrust tectonics because it's not a valid term, nor a technically correct description of the nature of thrust faulting. The sense of movement in thrust faulting is primarily lateral, not upward. --Orlady (talk) 18:30, 7 November 2010 (UTC) As for relaxing my standards on hooks, please note that I have been reviewing hooks here (on-again, off-again) for nearly 3 years, and I happen to believe that it is important to try to maintain quality here. You might note that DYK has been under attack recently due to the perception that reviewers have not been maintaining standards. --Orlady (talk) 18:39, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I said "relax", as opposed to "relax your standards" - there's a difference... You may have been reading around the subject, but you would be the first to complain about stuff in a hook that wasn't mentioned and reffed in an article. I think you've just made the point that "snail" is the WP:COMMONNAME for "shelly gastropod", and it's certainly a common shorthand used by the pros (eg Niles Eldredge of a Silurian species), and hooks should use common language where possible. Since you regard presence in Wikimedia projects as some kind of benchmark, I would draw your attention to wikt:upthrust; alternatively the geological sense is the only meaning of the word in my OED, first recorded in 1846. It's more of a field geology term than something to be used when talking about regional processes, it's certainly in common use in the field, because vertical movement of something that was below sea level is much more evident than a lateral movement that is potentially much greater in size. Given that we're talking about the history of a specific rock in the field, "upthrust" seems appropriate in this context.Le Deluge (talk) 16:01, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upthrust could be linked to thrust tectonics and snail should probably be linked to gastropod and pillow needs to be linked to pillow lava, I think. However, the snails are only used for dating the rocks, it's the shape of the pillows that has been used to understand the geometry of the upthrust block. If you want to keep the snails, how about

:*ALT2 ... that the history of the upthrust Stark's Knob has been studied using pillows and the snails found inside them? Mikenorton (talk) 11:09, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • The study of the upthrust process includes both its geometry and its timing, and the snails put a fundamental boundary on the latter - it could not have happened in the Cambrian for instance. So there's no need to include "history". To be honest, I think it's a mistake to overlink a hook like ALT1/2 that relies on its ambiguity to pique readers' curiosity. Linking to gastropod won't give much away, but linking to pillow lava and thrust tectonics will reduce the number of clickthroughs to the new article - which is the whole aim of DYK. Too many wikilinks reduce the hookiness of this style of hook.Le Deluge (talk) 19:13, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • You're right Le Deluge, the age of the lavas is a key piece of evidence telling us that this a thrust sheet, I thought about that the moment I woke up this morning, so yes we can lose history. I'm not sure that I agree about linking in the hook, I probably tend to link anything that I think that the average reader won't understand, but I see your point as well. Mikenorton (talk) 00:35, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Kevin, you're agreeing with me, I'm saying that ambiguity is good for clickthroughs, but wikilinking terms other than the target article can reduce the ambiguity and hence reduce clickthroughs. @Mike - if you're dreaming about DYK hooks, it's probably time to take a wikibreak! <g> The average reader can always use wikilinks within the article even if they're not in the hook.Le Deluge (talk) 16:01, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so now that the debate is over, what hook should be used? One is scientific, and two has good humor and intrigue. Number three just sounds a bit off in my opinion. I'm all for the first two though since one is intriguing while the other is intriguing and funny at the same time. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 01:40, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Methoxyflurane

5x expanded by DiverDave (talk). Self nom at 04:30, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've made a couple of small tweaks to the chemical aspects of the article, which is (IMO) an impressive x5 expansion. However, I do have a concern about the hook in that it seems focused on the inhaler rather than the analgesic, and the article says the substance was used in this way until about 1974, so it isn't current (which the hook implies). On a quick look, the article appears suitable (haven't done a proper check, though) but the hook needs some work. PS: Removed "example" image. PPS: Misread, striking current use comment, suggesting ALT1 with a better focus (IMO) on the substance.
(ALT1): ... that methoxyflurane is an emergency analgesic self-administered with a disposable Penthrox inhaler?
EdChem (talk) 10:38, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your helpful edits, EdChem. I like your (ALT1) hook better, as it does a better job of focusing the reader on the drug (methoxyflurane) than on the inhaler. DiverDave (talk) 12:39, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was quite surprised to read that this drug came from the Manhattan Project. I would never associate such a pharmacological agent with nuclear bombs. Would this make the hook more "hooky"? --PFHLai (talk) 17:19, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We need more information though. Why was it made as part of the project? How was it found and made? Etc., etc. Can you add this to the article? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 17:24, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I can't, as I don't know. I want to read about it and I was kind of hoping that the author of the article can enlighten me on this. But if we don't have this in the article, we shouldn't mention it on MainPage. --PFHLai (talk) 06:23, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Considering the new materials in the article now, I'm proposing this hook:
Thanks for the additions, DiverDave! --PFHLai (talk) 00:54, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I like the ALT2 hook the best. I believe there are enough inline citations to support the hook. Thank you for your interest and your help, PFHLai! DiverDave (talk) 03:56, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hold – I also like the additional detail on uranium enrichment, but as a chemist I have issues with some of what has been written. The relevant section of the methoxyflurane article points to the gaseous diffusion article which to me confuses effusion, the critical process in enrichment, and diffusion. I'd like a say or two to make some changes (and support them with references, which the gaseous diffusion article lacks) before we put this onto the main page. EdChem (talk) 04:57, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am a little confused. Are we saying that I must fix the article on gaseous diffusion in order for the methoxyflurane article to meet the criteria for DYK? I am happy to make whatever changes are necessary, but please be clear as to what you require. DiverDave (talk) 06:03, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, I am saying that the ALT2 highlights the connection between the article and uranium enrichment, and that part of the article points to an article where the science is inaccurate. I have seen other comment that also confuses diffusion and [effusion]]. As a chemist and an academic, I am aware of what needs adjusting, and I am quite willing to make the changes... I just would prefer that we do not (indirectly) highlight on the main page scientific inaccuracy. I am not acting as a reviewer and asking you, as nominator, to do anything. I am asking, in my capacity as an editor, for a brief hold from the DYK update preparers while I investigate what needs doing. I want to look into not only the gaseous diffusion article, but also whether the articles on UF6 and enrichment and the like need adjusting. I'm thinking from the perspective of the best interests of the 'pedia, delaying this nomination from its main page appearance briefly, so that scientific accuracy is presented to our readers. • … but even elementary arithmetic reveals a problem with the facts presented in the article. There is more than 14, or even 18, years between "the 1960s" and 1990, the publication date of the paper by Schoda, Mischel, and Peake. The problem here is the poor sourcing. Consult the actual paper, and you'll find that the initial study was in 1972, not "the 1960s" as third-hand pop-psychology sources put it, and that there were in fact two followup studies, one "more than 10 years later" (published in 1988) and a larger one three years after that (published in 1990). And no, the figure 210 occurs nowhere in the actual paper, and that's not really the result of the latter study as published at all (which was in fact a statistical correlation). Uncle G (talk) 03:32, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I understand that you're trying to help, but do you really have to be that aggressive about it? Your condescending tone was not constructive. I can sympathise that you've been stressed after arguing with Physchim on DYK talk, but please don't transfer that stress on to me, or any of the other nominators. I assumed, with good faith, that the New Yorker article was accurate, since they're generally known for having high editorial standards, and they did directly interview Mischel. I made an honest mistake, but I find your tone, however unintentional, highly inappropriate.--hkr (talk) 05:50, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I've been provided with the follow-up study, correcting the dates in the article as I speak.--hkr (talk) 21:39, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The dates have been corrected. The article is ready to go.--hkr (talk) 22:51, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As an aside, I found out where the number for the correlation comes from: Jonah Lehrer provided the number in a radio show (8:20), where he was being interviewed alongside Mischel. It's possible that when Lehrer interviewed Mischel (not in the radio show, but earlier on, for a book), Mischel provided an estimate, and Lehrer assumed that was the exact number. The lesson is, even with secondary sources, one should not be so trusting of journalists. ;) --hkr (talk) 23:51, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • That's correct. The source refers it as the second architectural use of aluminum, the first being the tip of the Washington Monument (see p. 84). The Monadnock is significant in its use of that then exotic metal in the actual construction of a building, hence the wording. If more clarity is called for, perhaps "first interior use of aluminum in a building" would do it. --Nasty Housecat (talk) 03:08, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

        • SmartSE is correct. When an article is created from or incorporates pre-existing prose from another article, it must be 5x expanded. (See A5.) It appears to me that the pre-existing prose is 700 characters, so a 5x expansion would be 3500 characters. The article is currently at 3158 characters of readable prose, so a little more expansion is still needed. (Sorry, forgot to sign. cmadler (talk) 18:47, 11 November 2010 (UTC))[reply]

This is fine as long as there is an obvious means of locating the corresponding full citation for the authors work. There are two issues with this article that make this difficult to perform with any certainty. First, many of the authors used have multiple publications listed with no obvious means to differentiate between multiple possibilities. Second, what appears to be the full citations is located in the "Further reading" section which according to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (layout)#Further reading is for publications "not used to verify article content". --Allen3 talk 00:07, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is also too much direct quoting for my liking, content should be new, in the OPSG section for example there is a 5 line quote. SmartSE (talk) 01:32, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks, I agree that some quotes are ok, but I think you need to do remove some more and only use them when there is absolutely no way that you can write it yourself. The main problem with the quotes is that governments tend to use too many words, when fewer can convey the same meaning and it makes the article sound clumsy. I'm not entirely sure about the hook, mainly because the exactness of the figure is a bit over the top, even if the source says this. I'd suggest rounding it to $1.75 billion instead. I really don't like "butchering" here (or in the article, for that matter); if that's the word Fahey himself used, we should put it in quotes. DS (talk) 14:13, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. And, in addition, the referencing is unclear. Is all of that one mammoth paragraph sourced to the same source with the single inline citation at the end? - The Bushranger Return fireFlank speed 20:22, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that paragraph is cited to that single source; I will try to find more sources. Instead of using "butchering", could we use "wrecking" or "spoiling"? MC10 (TCGBL) 21:24, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is not an encyclopedic article as it does not present a balanced perspective. • The article should perhaps make use of the newer Norsk biografisk leksikon article in a larger degree than the 100-year-old Dansk biografisk leksikon article. Also I recommend incorporating "northernmost scientific society in the world" into the hook.
  • What is intended by the term "high school" as it is used in the article and above? Norway lacked a university during its union with Denmark, but that nothing resembling a modern secondary or university-preparatory education (as it was at the time) would have existed in Norway before the 18th century seems unlikely to me. (What about the various cathedral schools, dating back to the 12th century?) Is it possibly a mistranslation of the Norwegian høyskole, which is an institution of higher education? The source for the claim is a History of Oslo University, and I would like to see a quote from the original Norwegian on the talk page to support the claim. --Hegvald (talk) 00:50, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is a discussion of which items from among our new or newly expanded articles should be featured in the "did you know?" section on the main page. Verifying whether the article meets the formal requirements for inclusion is part of the task here but not the entirety of it. No one has an entitlement to have his or her article on the mainpage, and we have every right to use editorial judgment about which to include and how the hooks should be worded. Newyorkbrad (talk) 21:29, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What Brad said. This is not an automated "if it meets the criteria, it goes on the main page" system; this is a discussion process in which we decide whether something is appropriate for inclusion on the sixth most viewed page on the internet. It's the job of the nominator to persuade people that it warrants inclusion. – iridescent 21:42, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, this is overly negative and not suited to the main page, even if it is interesting. SmartSE (talk) 21:47, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The issue of hooks people don't like is a recurring one, not a one-off problem. So the way to fix that is to go on the project talk page and get consensus to change the rules to say "Offensive hooks and articles can be rejected by discretion". Right now, the rules don't disallow this hook/article, and the only problem is one that should have been settled years ago either way. Every time this comes up is another test case, and another circus.

There is really nothing wrong with the hook. It's a well-sourced, statistical fact, not an opinion. Interesting to a wide range of people, especially those in Australia, where the issue is prominent. Will likely get a very high viewer count. The article itself is fine also. It's a decent size, and covers a broad range of issues. It could do with expansion but that's only because the topic itself is so big. Christopher Connor (talk) 22:07, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The previous circus to which Christopher refers may be found here. The end result of that discussion was that Rlevse simultaneously approved the alt hook and moved it to prep. Seems like a lot of the circus aspect could be avoided here if we skipped directly to the "here's a less inflammatory alt hook you can use" step. 28bytes (talk) 22:25, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Christopher Connor, if your position is that "offensive hooks must be used as submitted because there is no rule saying they can be rejected," then I am afraid that position is un-wikilike in nature and is likely to be completely disregarded. If you have a more constructive contribution to the discussion to make, please feel free. Newyorkbrad (talk) 03:02, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Christopher Connor, selection criterion 4 states (emphasis in original): "Articles and hooks which focus unduly on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided." A hook whose fact is that an identified racial / cultural group is convicted of disproportionately many homicides strikes me as 'negative aspects of living individuals', even if those individuals are only identified by a group designation rather than by name. Additional Rule D13 states: "To some extent, Did You Know approval is a subjective process. No amount of studying rules, almost-rules and precedents will guarantee approval, nor will violating any rule guarantee disapproval. Just because an unfamiliar criterion isn't listed, doesn't mean you can't be disqualified. The subjective decision might depend on an attempt to circumvent the details of the rules, especially if the attempt doesn't address the underlying purpose of improving the hook and article." This rule provides ample scope for the sort of editorial discretion to which Newyorkbrad has referred.

As for your statement that "[t]here is really nothing wrong with the hook. It's a well-sourced, statistical fact, not an opinion"; I must disagree. The "fact" is predicated on an assumption, namely that rates of conviction for homicide reflects accurately the rate at which homicides are committed. Can anyone be certain that indigenous and non-indigenous Australians are equally likely to be convicted if prosecuted for a crime? Can anyone be certain that the perpetrator of a homicide is equally likely to be caught and prosecuted, irrespective of race or other factors that may be correlated with race (education, socio-economic status, living circumstances, etc). Speaking as an Australian and leaving aside my Wikipedian hat, I am ashamed at the disparity that the statistics underlying this hook indicate. However, I do not accept that the conviction rates necessarily reflect homicide commission rates, nor that race is the cause of the disparity (which the hook implies) - correlation does not imply causation. Returning to wearing my Wikipedian hat, I believe there are ample grounds and precedent for declining to put a hook such as this onto the main page. I urge the nominator to consider proposing an alternative hook. EdChem (talk) 03:55, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't necessarily have a problem with the hook (apart from the caveats mentioned by EdChem, which could probably be remedied with a tweak or two), but I think the article itself is too narrow in focus, looking at Aboriginal crime rates but largely failing to contextualize the issue by relating it to the unique social conditions faced by indigenous populations. I therefore concur with those above that the article is not suitable for mainpage exposure. Gatoclass (talk) 10:50, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As requested, here is one of those little coloured signs. At least four other editors have expressed grave concerns about putting this on the front page; that alone is sufficient grounds for declining this nomination. 28bytes (talk) 21:43, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Make that five. I have been doing some clearing up of the article, but share a range of the concerns above. Unlike Gatoclass, I also did not think the hook would have been desirable for the main page. It casts in negative terms an issue that is more complex than either the hook or the article capture, though in Christopher Connor's defence, he has started to identify some of the literature that would address that issue of balance. hamiltonstone (talk) 00:51, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bihar legislative assembly election, 2010 ‎

5x expanded by Lihaas (talk). Self nom at 10:40, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • This nomination is a little late, but not unreasonably so, so I don't think it should be rejected on that grounds. However, the article is currently significantly undersourced (in the Background and Schedule sections -- we generally seek a minimum of 1 in-line citation per paragraph), the Parties section is marked as needing expansion, and most of the references are bare URLs. Keep in mind also that if this article appears on In The News (for which it seems a good candidate), it will become ineligible for DYK. cmadler (talk) 14:02, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't get much of a chance to respond to this before it was taken off.
The article was originally put in the "quarantine" for a special date, (and had no replies before i moved it here) where it was nominated within days of its creation in the first place. I wrote the same thing above but for some reason that doesnt seem to have been read. As for the "party" section that will duly be updated on Nov 24 when the results are announced (hence the "special date" not just regular nomination) at which point the electoral commission lists every party that does take part in the election.
The schedule section is wholly sourced, its there in the table. The background section is not sourced here but it is on the respectively linked page. I can move it here if need be. On section that have other pages in the past we have not called for repetitive cites, so i didnt think it necessary.
Its also not ITN as a sub-national election. But a 6-phase election is DYK-able.
I've now answered these queries with cites, etc. (see the page) Lihaas (talk) 16:40, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
When I removed this, I noted in my edit summary that it had maintenance tags on it. That needs to be resolved ASAP if you wish to resurrect this one. I won't remove it from the queue again but if the issues behind the maintenance tags aren't cleared up in a reasonable amount of time, I expect someone else will. 28bytes (talk) 16:53, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ive already explained the expand tag for the parties, which will be gone before it goes up (nominated for Nov 24 when results are out). Theres only 1 other tag, i can take it off now as it was pending a bot addition. No hindrance to the page.
Not really requiring "considerable" work, per the first responder some more work (for obviosu reason), its a maybe right now.

For December 10

This nomination has an unusual history, having been nominated originally for a date-specific spot on October 28. The discussion WT:DYK#Hook with Oct 28 request date explains the situation. Pursuant to that discussion, Paralympiakos and I request that the two articles Magomed Sultanakhmedov and Rafał Moks that were moved to article space on 24 October, now be held for a December 10 hook. These two mixed martial arts fighters were due to face each other in a championship bout on October 28; their bout was postponed at the last moment. On December 10, there will be three bouts for inaugural global championship (different weight divisions) and our intention is for a 6-article hook for that date. EdChem (talk) 02:59, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Original Nomination for October 28 - including a belated (and much appreciated) DYKtick from Strange Passerby

Jointly Created by Paralympiakos (talk) and EdChem (talk). Self nom at 17:03, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please note: All 6 articles in this hook have been worked on by both nominators in user space, and were moved to article space today. For ease of checking, this link from M-1 Global confirms the match ups and the championships each fighter holds, this link confirms that Grishin was replaced due to injury. Suggestions for alternative (shorter) hooks most welcome, we had trouble coming up with something sufficiently short that mentioned all seven fighters (Taisumov is not a new article). EdChem (talk) 17:03, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
More compact hook to consider... EdChem (talk) 19:30, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ALT2: * ... that today in St. Petersburg, MMA bouts will determine M-1 Global's lightweight (Artiom Damkovsky vs. Mairbek Taisumov), middleweight (Magomed Sultanakhmedov vs. Rafał Moks) and heavyweight (Kenny Garner (replacing injured Maxim Grishin) vs. Guram Gugenishvili) Champions?
ALT3: * ... that M-1 Global's lightweight (Artiom Damkovsky vs. Mairbek Taisumov), middleweight (Magomed Sultanakhmedov vs. Rafał Moks) and heavyweight (Kenny Garner (replacing injured Maxim Grishin) vs. Guram Gugenishvili) MMA Champions will be determined today in St. Petersburg?
In addition to EdChem's comments, I'd like to request the Oct 28, 1p.m. London time slot, due to the event starting at 11.30 EST that day. I think this would give the hook time to ....hook prior to the event starting and also cover a little bit during the event. Thanks. Paralympiakos (talk) 23:44, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The goal 6-article hook would be something like:

* ... that M-1 Global's welterweight (Tom Gallicchio vs. Shamil Zavurov) middleweight (Magomed Sultanakhmedov vs. Rafał Moks), and light heavyweight (Tomasz Narkun vs. Vyacheslav Vasilevsky) MMA Champions will be determined at M-1 Challenge XXII today?

For January 1, 2011, Seal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation

Expanded and self-nominated by ChrisO (talk) 20:50, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This nomination is a bit of a special case. I originally nominated Seal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on August 3 following a 5x expansion (see discussion above under #Articles created/expanded on August 3). Everyone accepted that it met the DYK criteria but the nomination was derailed by a political dispute over timing. I've put forward a compromise at User talk:Jimbo Wales#Compromise proposal, which involves passing this DYK now but scheduling its appearance on January 1, 2011, which is 60 years to the day since the seal was first used. This proposal has been generally welcomed so I'm putting it forward here for formal consideration. I'm aware that the timeframe is somewhat longer than would be usual for scheduled DYKs, but in the circumstances I think a some flexibility would be justified. I've put forward two possible hooks: the original one as proposed earlier, and a new alternative tying the DYK in more directly with the date. -- ChrisO (talk) 20:50, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Interesting compromise. It completely flipped my opinion of the matter. However, prior to providing said opinion, I'd like some clarification: Are we nominating this (with whichever hook) sans image as you initially suggested on Jimbo's talk page?
    --K10wnsta (talk) 00:39, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Appended: I see that you removed the image from inclusion in the original nomination, so I'll assume this post-dated nomination would not include the image either. However, this necessitates further clarification:
Are we excluding the image from this DYK solely because of the recent interaction with the FBI?

In effect yes, but in my view it's a necessary evil if we're to reach a satisfactory compromise on this issue. -- ChrisO (talk) 01:16, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • - Tentative Even if the motivation behind qualifying this article for DYK was questionable, I think you already achieved not just a satisfactory compromise, but a completely valid and justifiable use for it. In fact, it's use is so valid, refusing to use the image for no other reason than the recent hoobajoo with the FBI is blatantly (chilled) censorship...and I just can't get behind that. If we're going to censor it, we need to go whole hog or don't go at all.
Could we put it up for 'On This Day' to avoid reasoning for exclusion of the image?

  • No opinion on whether to feature on the future date; however, it would be better if this hook didn't remain on the suggestions page for the intervening months, as it is bound to attract further discussion and the page is unwieldy enough as it is. Espresso Addict (talk) 01:55, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Espresso's suggestion may be useful for more than just making this page leaner. A delay in nomination would lend to better perspective for those establishing consensus. In other words, removing it from discussion for a couple months would also put some time between recent events and the article (and hopefully image) being contemplated for a main page feature (unless such a delay would disqualify it from use in DYK section).

Comment This hook should not "disappear" for a few months. It is far better to leave it here to enable a wide input from editors on the issue. I think this is a good compromise that involves common sense, the proposal and special treatment of the timescale fitting nicely under WP:IAR. Mjroots (talk) 13:53, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I do not support 1 January 2011. The DYK section is for new articles. There are exceptions like April Fools and Halloween; I do not see the point of making every day of the year a possible exception. Geschichte (talk) 20:28, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Anniversary or not, a four-month wait at DYK is an overkill. The point of DYK is to present new or newly expanded articles, not to present "on this day". By then this article will be more than four months old. If this line of though is going to be followed, DYK is going to end up in a mess. The length of this entry is plain evidence for why keeping things around for almost five months is not a good idea. Arsenikk (talk) 13:55, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • per IAR. I would count this as a valid use of IAR. This could have gone up for today. The only reason it isn't going up is for political reasons. I disagree with Jimbo and others on that matter and think we should run it now, but there is no need to reject it entirely on that basis. NW (Talk) 03:03, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support as this would have been promoted in the usual time window if not for the decision to shelve it until the political heat was off. To kill it now because a delay was agreed to would be an egregious abuse of trust. - Dravecky (talk) 09:24, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
