Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it after the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

• Proposed articles should:
• not be marked as stubs;
• contain more than 1,500 characters (around 1.5 kilobytes) in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables);
• cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
• be no more than five days old (former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are acceptable).
• Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
• To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
• Suggested facts should be:
• interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
• short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters),
• neutral,
• definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
• preferably cited in the article with an inline citation.
• Suggested pictures should be:
• suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
• attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
• already in the article; and
• relevant to the article.
• formatted as and placed directly above the suggested fact.
• Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have 1,500+ character non-stub text that brings out interesting, relational, and referenced facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
• Please sign the nomination with the create/expand date and the name of the creator(s) or creator and nominator, such as:
• *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article by User; Nom by ~~~~
• *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article self-nom by ~~~~

• *...that (text)? -- Article expanded fivefold on July 19, 2007 by User and ~~~~
• Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
• If you nominate someone else's article, you can use to notify them. Usage: Thanks, ~~~~

Expanded from a stub originally created by De mortuis... and nominated by Jacklee 01:27, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article was too long to begin with, it was over 8K before you started to work on it a few weeks ago,l thus it is not eligible for DYK.Balloonman 03:35, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh? There's nothing in the instructions about an article having to be below a certain length before expansion. The article probably exceeded 8K because it contained a long list of films, TV shows and theatre productions that the subject had appeared in. However, it lacked biographical information on the subject, and was marked as a stub. I removed the tag after expanding it. I thought that one of the rationales behind DYK was to encourage editors to expand stubs. Cheers, Jacklee 00:02, 8 August 2007 (UTC), revised 17:51, 9 August 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Just a heads-up, with no verifiable references or inline references, this article may be a candidate for deletion... as is, it reads as non-notable.Balloonman 03:44, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
May I know why this article is a candidate for deletion with all the references provided? The materials were obtained from these references, and I couldn't possibly add inline references for each and every line of the article?! Besides, why is the article non-notable?? —Sengkang 05:59, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The article isn't up for deletion... but I warn that somebody may nominate it for such if it makes it to the front page. The problems: 1) There are NO references. There is a section at the bottom labeled "references" but it is more of a list of articles. References mean citing facts in the article as they occur. You don't have to cite EVERY line, but the complete derth of inline citations is grounds for possible deletion. 2) Four of these six items labelled as references don't work or are in a foreign language. One is a news paper article that can't be reviewed and the final one is a very short bio---the type that I don't personally place much faith in. 3) Right now I question if it would meet the parameters for Notability per WP:MUSIC or WP:PROF. 4) Currently the writing is pretty simplistic that reads as somebody writing an article on themselves or a loved one. For example, the early life section describing his family or his college continuing to play music he wrote. The later does not establish notability. Again, the article is not up for deletion and I won't nominate it for such... but if it made it to the front page somebody might for the above reasons.Balloonman 06:33, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the attention and explanation. To substantiate my point about his notability, a full-page interview for Liang Wern Fook appeared in Singapore's main broadsheet The Straits Times on 6 August 2007. This, I have adapted into the main body of the article, and its reference is listed (sorry, a softcopy of this is not available as it is subscription-based). As Liang is deeply involved in Asian pop music, I have attempted to search for more materials in non-English sites, i.e. sites in Chinese language (these links work from my side). I have painstakingly translated the materials in some of these references into English. Liang was a notable musician in the Asian pop scene in the 1980s and 1990s (and currently still is, as a composer), and has written songs for many renowned Asian singers and pop stars. You may want to consult my fellow Singaporeans born in this period, and they most probably would know him and have even crooned to his tunes. If you consider that the English is too simplistic, I would suggest that someone re-write it in a more abstruse language? Thank you. —Sengkang 06:49, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

• We appreciate all of your work/effort on this page, but this article was too long for an expansion to count asa DYK... in order to be eligible, the article has to start with fewer than 1500 characters. This had over 3K.Balloonman 03:48, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
• I can't seem to find that on the DYK rules and have never had this point raised in the past, unless I missed something. And without the lead, which I don't think is included and that table the Aug 3 chracter count was 1,940 with spaces. IvoShandor 07:03, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like an admin recently made a change with this edit. I don't like his getting rid of the guidance I think something should define what a "short article" is... 1500 characters has been the traditional understanding of a short article... but I've always thought 1500 characters was too short. Thus, if it is no longer part of the guidance, my objection is withdrawn on this article. (It still exists for the 10K+ articles)Balloonman 07:54, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have no objection to it not being included, if that's what needs to be done and I agree there should be some defining characteristic of short but some leeway should be given, in this case, I referenced an unreferenced article, expanded it and removed a table that really is better related as prose. Either way though, I have no objection to omitting it from DYK, I get enough anyway, let some of the new users get some airplay. : ) IvoShandor 08:54, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure if linking out to another website is that good an idea for MainPage. How about wikisource ? --PFHLai 05:10, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
• 20 goals a season is an excellent record for a striker. Didier Drogba, the top scorer in England last year, scored 33 goals in 59 games in all competitions last season. However, top players play a lot more games now, in comparison Sale averaged 20 goals in only 35 games, which is actually a better strike rate than Drogba's. Eventhough this has been increased 10x it is still less than the desired 1500 characters of prose. It needs to be expanded to be eligible.Balloonman 03:19, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ship being built in Uljanik
Ship being built in Uljanik
This is a little short... should have at least 1500 characters of prose. Also, I'm not sure if this article would survive an AFD. IMHO it would fail WP:CRYSTAL---"Individual scheduled or expected future events should only be included if the event is notable and almost certain to take place." As an independent film it is not "almost certain to take place" nor is it the film itself notable.Balloonman 03:32, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In my experience working with films, no article of a film that has entered production has ever been deleted. An appropriate guideline to follow is notability for films, which stipulates that an article should not be created on a film until production has started, and only if that production is notable. The production has been covered significantly by The Baltimore Sun, which also provided images from the film on its website (available in the external links). The director is a cinematographer who has worked on multiple major projects, and most of the cast have a fairly extensive background for a small film. I realize that the article is short, but that's generally the nature of articles about upcoming films (even upcoming major productions like 10,000 BC (film) don't have much detail at this point). These things will grow in time. I've been able to offer Choke (film) and John Hancock (film) for DYK factoids to introduce some variety to what's available. However, if you still believe it to be insufficient, I won't press the matter further. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 14:10, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm only one person... and my opinions are just that---opinions ;-) I personally would question any independent film as being notable or "almost certain" of happening. That being said, if there are guidelines to the contrary, I'd accept them. WP:NF could be read either way---but I accept you at your word that this is acceptable, film notability is not an area I am overly familiar with, so I withdraw my concern.Balloonman 14:57, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since we are behind schedule and DEMAND > SUPPLY OF DYK REAL ESTATE, it is advisable that candidate entries have all the necessary attributes to compel an administrator to select the article rather than pass them over. In all cases below, the article is of borderline length except where other problems have been identified, so please consider expanding to attract the attention of the selecting admins. CARROT.
