UFC 110: Nogueira vs. Velasquez is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on Sunday February 21, 2010 in Sydney, Australia at the Acer Arena.[1] The event will mark the UFC's first trip to Australia.
Background
A bout between heavyweight contenders Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez that was originally scheduled for UFC 108 before Nogueira pulled out due to a staph infection is now being targeted as the card's main event.[2]
The long expected bout between Yoshihiro Akiyama and Wanderlei Silva[3] will not take place at this event. Instead, Silva is expected to face British striker Michael Bisping who is coming off an impressive victory over Canadian MMA Fighter, Denis Kang.[4][5] A bout between Nate Marquardt and Chael Sonnen which was expected to take place on this card has been moved up to UFC 109.[6]
A bout between Keith Jardine and Rich Franklin was being discussed.[7] Jardine will instead fight the Ultimate Fighter 8 Winner Ryan Bader who is also undefeated sporting an impressive record of 10-0. Another expected bout is between George Sotiropoulos and Joe Stevenson. Bout agreements have been sent, but at this time not finalised.[8]
A previously planned fight between Dong Hyun Kim and Chris Lytle[9] has been cancelled due to an injury to Kim.[10]
Tickets for the event sold out on the first day they were available to the general public.[11]
