Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it immediately before the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should:
    • not be marked as stubs;
    • contain more than 1,500 characters (around 1.5 kilobytes) in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables); This is a suggestion, not a firm rule; it is rather silly to oppose an article solely because it is 1490 characters in length.
    • cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
    • be no more than five days old (former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are acceptable).
    • Articles on living individuals - these must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.
  • Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
  • Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
    • interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    • short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
    • neutral,
    • definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
    • preferably cited in the article with an inline citation.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
    • attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
    • already in the article; and
    • relevant to the article.
    • formatted as [[Image:image name |right|100x100px| Description]] and placed directly above the suggested fact.
  • Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have 1,500+ character non-stub text that brings out interesting, relational, and referenced facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please sign the nomination with the create/expand date and the name of the creator(s) or creator and nominator, such as:
    • *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article by [[User]]; Nom by ~~~~
    • *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article self-nom by ~~~~

  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|July 4}} Thanks, ~~~~

    • (Please reconsider the above submission as hook has been straightened out since first submission on October 31, at which point it was a 7-fold increase plus by November 2 another two-fold increase since October31 , plus horrible internet connection problems so I could not clarify! Sir J. E. Wilmot
Presumably you mean that "...that New York Times reporter Byron Darnton became the tenth American war correspondent to be killed in action in World War II in 1942 when he died in a mistaken attack by a B-25 bomber in New Guinea? - better than the alt one anyway. Johnbod 20:35, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, something like that. Sorry, my first time submitting one of these... Tony Fox (arf!) 21:04, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure he was killed in action as a mere journalist. Johnbod 20:35, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, war correspondents were on the ground with the troops in WWII, and were treated like them for the most part. But, it was a friendly fire incident, so I could replace "action" with "New Guinea" if that'd work better. Tony Fox (arf!) 21:04, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
friendly fire is not a problem, but I think being a jornalist is - they were supposed to watch, not shoot. New Guinea would work.Johnbod 22:35, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • that Middleton on the Hill does not mean "middle town or village" (from Old English middel "middle" and tūn "farm, village, estate, enclosure, manor (which gives us the modern English "town") as with most places of the name (e.g. Middleton, Greater Manchester: instead the etymology derives from Old English micel "large (related to modern English much" and tūn "farm, village, estate, enclosure, manor", here in the sense "estate" meaning "large village" (i.e. one that is broad in size) The name was recorded in 1086 in the Domesday Book as Miceltune. Where does it say that disqualifies it? Chris 03:14, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
He means this quote from #Suggestions: "Proposed articles should: ... be no more than five days old (former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are acceptable)." The article wasn't expanded fivefold (which would be impractical for such a really big article anyway). Art LaPella 03:21, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Art. Based on that reading, I still don't think anything in there disqualifies this article, do you? I would ask that the "disqualification" be rescinded as it simply is not what that says. Chris 03:45, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(Removing my previous comment) I missed that it was "in Phips' workshop until 1 Nov, when it was moved to mainspace". In that case, it qualifies. Art LaPella 05:06, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(ALT++)*...that Sell v. United States decided a dentist, whose bail had been revoked, had been held in prison for eight years without trial for refusing to be medicated with psychiatric drugs? - 10 fold increase since October 31 (self nom) --Mattisse 12:40, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The last two versions seem to be saying that the Supreme Court found only that: 1. Sell was held in prison for 8 years, 2. without a trial and 3. for refusing medication. All 3 of those would ordinarily be verified by asking a clerk, not the Supreme Court. I think the article says the Court held that Sell was wrongfully held. Art LaPella 20:11, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • (O.K. - the issue was that only two of the three criteria outlined by the Supreme Court were true, not the third - 1. Sell was charged with an important crime, 2. Medication was likely to restore his sanity, however 3. was not true: Sell had not been proven dangerous. The evidence had to show him to be dangerous for forcible medication to be constitutional)
(ALT+++)*...that Sell v. United States decided a dentist, whose bail had been revoked, had been wrongfully held in prison for eight years without trial for refusing to be medicated with psychiatric drugs? - 10 fold increase since October 31 (self nom) --Mattisse 12:40, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
IMO, many of these hooks about "violating his right to cognitive liberty" add too much POV barely touched upon in the article. And you're drowning in details: better stick with stating one core fact, that is, what the SCOTUS decided about forced medication. Also, I have problem for an alt hook because I found the article hard to follow about the actual result (problem explained on article talk page). I'm trying this:
  • Agree with the cognitive liberty part -- those should be left out. However the rest of the two ALT's I don't quite agree with. The Supreme Court has been progressively delineating the limits of involuntary treatment of inmates (Washington v. Harper and others) as well as civilly committed individuals . This case is a defendant not an inmate, but is criminally committed (because bail was revoked), and the issue is if can he be mediated for the sole reason of making him competent to stand trial? The court has said in several other cases (starting with Donaldson v. Wainwright) that dangerous must be an issue in civil cases. This case reaffirms that there must be a finding of dangerousness before involuntary commitment or medication can be considered for the criminally committed. But the issue is far from settled and appears to be in a state of flux, depending on the status of the individual, a defendant (higher requirements because the person is innocent at this point) to incarcerated inmate where the court is willing to allow prison officials more latitude and make reasonable policies as long as the official follow them. However, even here the issue of dangerous must be considered - that part has been settled for decades for the civilly committed. Mattisse 00:10, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
