Closing instructions

The discussion about merging at the village pump is now archived (here). The vast majority of those who expressed an opinion considered the system based on the current templates and this process (Wikipedia:Proposed mergers) to be inadequate.

The implementation of a new automated system is being discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Merge/Archive 2#Automation of merge proposals. More participation in that discussion is welcome.

This page lists proposed article mergers as a supplement to the merge categories and templates; it is meant for discussing possible mergers and does not replace any of the other steps in the merger process. Please add the appropriate merger tag(s) to the articles before listing them here.

How to propose a merger

There are three types of mergers on Wikipedia:

  1. ) mergers that are so obviously necessary and appropriate that no one is expected to object;
  2. ) mergers that would benefit from discussion with the other editors at the affected articles' Talk page about whether and/or how to perform the merge; and
  3. ) mergers that are either controversial or potentially difficult to carry out, and therefore need assistance from uninvolved editors in determining whether to merge the pages.

If the pages that you would like to merge fall into the type 1 group, then it is not necessary to propose a merger at all. You should boldly do the merger now, without formally proposing it. (In the event that someone unexpectedly objects, then the merger can be undone easily, and you can formally propose the merger for discussion at that time.)

If the merge falls into the type 2 group or type 3 group, or a formal discussion is needed or wanted, then proposing a merger can be done in three steps (as the proposer, you should still be willing to carry-out the merger in a type 2 article):

  • Step 1: Create a place for discussion. Go to the Talk Page (also known as the discussion page) of the TARGET ARTICLE (the one you want to merge to) and create a section (eg: "Merger proposal") to discuss the merger. If there's already a discussion on the talk page regarding the merger, you can omit this step. Whether the discussion is new or old, make sure the discussion section names all articles involved and links to them. The section name can be anything that includes the word merge (for example ==Merger Discussion==).
  • Step 2: Put one of the merger tags at the top of the articles you wish to be merged. The templates {{Merge from}} and {{Merge to}}, or {{merge}} are the most common ones. Remember to make sure that the Discuss link in each tag points to the section you've created in step 1 (this is to prevent having two separate discussions on different talk pages).
  • Step 3: If the proposed merge is controversial or potentially difficult to carry out, follow the directions under #Requests for merge assistance and feedback to add it to the list.
See: Copy and Paste easy merge templates for easy to follow shortcuts of the above procedure.

Many bold mergers are performed each day. Of the mergers that are formally proposed, about 95% fall into the second category, of wanting discussion or practical assistance from the editors at the articles that are to be merged. The remaining 5% of formally proposed mergers are on contentious topics or are controversial for one reason or another. Only this small fraction is listed at the bottom of this page as instructed in step #3.

Requests for merge assistance and feedback

If you need outside feedback regarding mergers that are either tricky or of a controversial nature, please do the following:

  • Tag the article as shown above
  • Create a discussion as shown above
  • Notify the talk page of the appropriate Wikiproject to get knowledgeable people to comment on it. (To find out which Wikiproject the page is associated with, check the associated talk page. It should be tagged with a template, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey.)
  • If there is consensus to merge, but the merge is difficult, contact Wikipedia:WikiProject Merge for assistance.

For other topics:

  • If you need help with renaming or moving, consult Help:Moving a page.
  • Cut-and-paste move fixes: If you have merged an article by this method, then you need to request page histories to be merged; list them at requests for history merge. Please DO NOT perform further moves by cut and paste.

NOTE: Do not Post Here if You are Not Willing to do the Merge Yourself. We will provide you assistance in how to complete the merge if you are unsure how to do it. -Project Merge
NOTE: Please do not re-list old merge proposals that are already tagged and in the "to Merge" queue (including requests made up to two years ago), as these will be handled as we get to them. -Project Merge

Merge Requests

New requests

If you need assistance with proposing a merge, list it below and someone will make sure it's properly listed. Note that this will not get the merge completed, as there is a large merge backlog. Once a merge is listed properly, move it to the "Completed requests" or "Awaiting consensus" sections below as appropriate.

Please list new requests at the bottom of this section. Use the Edit Summary and list at least a link to the article to be redirected. Please legitimize your request by signing each listing or comment by typing four tildes (~~~~):

  • Merge Jack and Jill bathroom to bathroom. They are about the same thing. The only real difference is that one is about a bathroom with two doors and the other is about a normal bathroom.
  • Merge DMA Design into Rockstar North. Since they are the same company (including being the same legal entity), they share the same history. The latter article already includes about all of the information from the prior, just in a different writing style, so it makes no sense to keep both. The DMA Design article should be redirected, and the lede and infobox of Rockstar North be adapted to DMA Design's. Lordtobi () 17:42, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Awaiting consensus

Once all involved articles are tagged, request should be added here — at the BOTTOM of this section. This section can also be used if a proposal needs further discussion due to age or disagreement. All merger comments and discussions should be directed to the Discussion subsection of the targeted articles' talk page, not here. We will also attempt to get more people to comment on proposals.

There is no objection stated to merging. Bold Merge can proceed by interested editor. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 17:46, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Jules Léotard to Leotard, given the article's shortness and his only real claim to fame was inventing the garment, he does not really need a separate article.
  • As stated on the discussion page, I think Wally West II should be merged back into the original Wally West article. Per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (comics), roman numerals should never be used in a title unless it's actually used in the character's name, which isn't the case here. The second Wally West is also a relatively new character, and should be able to fit in the main article. I think it's also original research having the character from the CW show be listed under the second Wally West's article, when in the show he's meant to be the Wally West. DrBat (talk) 13:18, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The article Tamarind has a section on usage that anything worth keeping might be added to. --Josy (talk) 20:26, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Laura Youngblood should be merged into Cindy Sheehan. She is really only known for her rivalry with Sheehan and has not done anything substantial of that. We really do not need all the stuff about her late husband and the rest of the article can be added to a new section in Sheehan's article about their rivalry.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.3.78.50 (talk) 01:11, 3 December 2016
  • Merge The Beverly Hills into Tai Po. "The Beverly Hills" is stub-class and has not been updated in over a year, leading me to wonder whether the subject can support an article on its own. "Tai Po" is the most logical place to put the information in "The Beverly Hills" if that article is not to be deleted. Rob Kelk 20:34, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Answered requests

After discussion concludes, completed requests should be moved below (to the top of this list). Please mark as {{Done}}; {{Not Done}}; {{Working}} when consensus has been reached.

  • Comment: Target article had merge-from-tag removed unilaterally for some reason; probably surprising some people on this long-standing proposal. I re-tagged the article and hopefully this time it will generate some discussion as to its merits, including a response from @Geraldo Perez:. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 12:25, 31 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge List of Roman theatres into Roman theatre (structure) (ie just put the list below the article). The first of what is intended to be a series of proposals to reduce the very bad habit that has grown up in this area of separating short articles and fairly short lists. Here the article is only 6.2 kbytes and the list 33 kb. It is unencyclopedic to keep them apart - readers of each should see both. Outside the table the list article has only a one-line introduction (which manages to include two spellings of "theatre/theater". In cases where the combined length would be excessive (eg Greek temple and the matching list) there is sense in this approach (with a proper introduction) but not here. • 2015 Heimdal train derailment should be merged to List of rail accidents (2010-present). Though the AfD was closed as No Consensus, most if not all of the voters agreed this derailment is not notable enough for a standalone article since it had little to no lasting impacts in the rail industry and the list article already mentions it.
  • Merge List of Arubans to Aruba. The list is a very short article that would take years to expand to the point it would overwhelm the main article. Not likely to happen for the foreseeable future.

@BD2412: Just at a glance, it looks like it would be relatively simple. The sections in snack would fit nicely almost exactly as is into the snack food. You wouldn't even need to integrate anything into the existing sections, there aren't many subsections in the snack food article. --NickPenguin(contribs) 03:46, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge List of military occupations into List of territorial disputes. >>>Discussion<<<. The lists are fundamentally the same, but the first is essentially a platform for editors with strong points of view about particular conflicts to cast one or another side of a conflict in a negative light. See the talk page for typical discussions among partisan editors. The merge is likely to be contested by these partisan editors, as "List of territorial disputes" is a much more neutral (and more accurate) description of the conflicts listed. --Ravpapa (talk) 17:10, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge USA for Africa into "We Are the World". >>>Join Discussion<<<. While the latter article is FA status, the USA for Africa article is entirely unsourced and apart from the lead consists of just two sections, an (incomplete) list of performers on "We Are the World", and the tracks on the accompanying We Are the World album. Both the "We Are the World" article and the We Are the World album article cover these two sections in far more detail, so there is no need for the separate USA for Africa article. Having just one article for "We Are the World"/USA for Africa would make it much easier to maintain. Richard3120 (talk) 02:49, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge Miramichi (electoral district) into Miramichi—Grand Lake into Miramichi (electoral district) (edited). >>>Discussion Here<<< Rationale: Miramichi—Grand Lake is a redistributed Canadian federal electoral district that is comprised mostly of the former Miramichi federal electoral district. There is a precedent of keeping redistributed-but-largely-similar electoral districts in the same article as their predecessor district. This precedent has, in fact, been used in constructing the page for the Miramichi electoral district, as the district's previous incarnation as the district of Northumberland-Miramichi is contained in the same article. Further, of the 10 federal districts in New Brunswick, all have been redistributed, but Miramichi—Grand Lake is the only new district to have received a separate article from its predecessor. --Omertop (talk) 19:35, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Investigative Project on Terrorism into Steven Emerson. There is no such entity as the Investigative Project on Terrorism, and much of the information included in the current article belongs in an article under the actual organization which is The Investigative Project on Terrorism Foundation founded in April 2006. There is also a separate entity, The Investigative Project, and the Steven Emerson article where some of the information belongs. Everything is being lump summed under an invalid article. • Merge MG Cars and MG Motor; There are two articles about the motoring brand MG - MG Cars and MG Motor. This causes confusion about a brand that is not defunct as the article MG Cars states. It is proposed that one article should be created named 'MG' with details about the brand - past and present. If there is too much information for one article, then 'The History of MG' would be a suitable secondary article. The merger has so far not come up with a natural conclusion. See details here. • Merge Kollam Airport into Asramam Maidan; The two articles overlap in that they describe the same open space which once used to be a landing ground in the 1930s (not an airport, as claimed).
