UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by Ultimate Fighting Championship. It is expected to take place on May 26, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.[1][2][3]
Background
For the first time in UFC history all 5 fights on the main card will be Heavyweight bouts.[4] UFC Primetime will return to promote the main event.[5] Headlining the event was the highly anticipated match-up for the heavyweight championship belt between one of the UFC newest stars Alistair Overeem (who defeated a former champion Brock Lesnar on his debut) and the current UFC Heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos. Further down the card, Roy Nelson, who was originally scheduled to fight Silva, and then briefly Gabriel Gonzaga,[6] will now face Dave Herman.[7][8] And Shane del Rosario, who was originally slated to fight Gonzaga, will now face Stipe Miocic.[9] Evan Dunham was expected to face Edson Barboza at the event. However, Dunham was forced from the event with an injury and replaced by returning veteran Jamie Varner.[10][11]

UFC star Alistair Overeem banned for 2012 after failed drug test
On April 4, 2012, Overeem was revealed to have failed his pre-fight drug test by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), Overeem’s testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio was 14-to-1, well above the 6-to-1 limit in Nevada. [12].[13]Overeem's March drug test showed a 14:1 testosterone-epitestosterone ratio, according to the Nevada commission. Most people are a ratio of 1:1 although the commission allows for a ratio of 6:1. The World Anti-Doping Agency allows a 4:1 ratio. [14] The NSAC ruled Overeem ineligible to reapply for a license for 9 months, until Dec 27. Overeem claimed that the high testosterone levels were the result of an anti-inflammatory medication he had been taking for a rib injury that he was not aware contained testosterone. [15] The NSAC could have made Overeem’s waiting period a full year, but gave him the benefit of the doubt and shortened it to nine months from the day of the test, meaning he can apply again Dec. 27. After the denial of license, Overeem appeared at a NSAC hearing on April 24, 2012[16] in order to review his request for a license and request for a continuance. The request was denied and the NSAC voted unanimously to deny Overeem's application status for a period of 9 months, dating back to March 27, the day of his drug test. He may reapply after this time period in December 2012.[17] [18]
Overeem's failure of his drug test subsequently resulted in a considerable shake up of the matches on the original main card. Previous to Overeem's hearing, on April 20, 2012, UFC President Dana White announced that Junior dos Santos will face Frank Mir instead of Alistair Overeem.[19] Two days later White announced that Cain Velasquez, who was originally slated to fight Mir in the co-main event, will now face Antonio Silva.[20]. With Mir facing Dos Santos instead of Velasquez, Mir switched his training preparation from wresting-focused to boxing-focused. [21]
UFC boss Dana White was said to be "really mad" about the turn of events regarding Overeem, saying "Anybody who’s using (performance-enhancing drugs) right now is an absolute (expletive) moron,"[22] Dana later said, he is considering cutting Alistair from the UFC.[23]
