Binhai (simplified Chinese: 滨海; traditional Chinese: 濱海), officially known as Binhai New Area (Chinese: 滨海新区; Chinese: 濱海新區) is a major economic development zone within the jurisdiction of Tianjin municipality in China. It will enlarge Tianjin port, and build many new industrial parks in the Tanggu area east of Tianjin. It is to emulate operations seen in Shenzhen and Pudong, Shanghai.[1] It is a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the PRC, and experimental reforms are taking place throughout the zone.
Before 2009, Binhai New Area is similar to Hengqin New Area, a level of administration absent from the official layers of governance, and consisting in fact of several districts in Tianjin, namely Tanggu District, Hangu District, and Dagang District [2].
Starting from November 2009, Binhai New Area was consolidated into a district, and the former subordinate districts of Tanggu, Hangu and Dagang were abolished.[3]
