The year 2013 is the 20th year in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a mixed martial arts promotion based in the United States. 2013 started with UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping. 2013 also saw the introduction of the women's bantamweight weight class with UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche.[1]

UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on January 19, 2013 at Ibirapuera Arena in São Paulo, Brazil.[8][9]

Background

The main fight featured middleweights Michael Bisping and Vitor Belfort. The event also held the first UFC fight for Daniel Sarafian, middleweight finalist on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil. Sarafian was injured before the championship fight with Cezar Ferreira, who went on to win the show.[10]

Johnny Eduardo was briefly linked to a bout at this event against Yuri Alcantara, but was replaced by George Roop.[11] Roop was then injured and replaced by UFC newcomer Pedro Nobre.[12]

Thiago Perpetuo was expected to face Michael Kuiper at the event; however, Perpetuo suffered an injury and was replaced by Caio Magalhaes.[13] On December 27, it was announced that Magalhaes had also pulled out of the bout and that Kuiper would be shifted to UFC on Fox 6 on January 26, 2013 to face Buddy Roberts.[14]

Roger Hollett was expected to face Wagner Prado at the event; however, Hollett was forced out of the bout with a torn bicep and was replaced by promotional newcomer Ildemar Alcantara.[15]

A bout between Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida was briefly linked to this event,[23] but was eventually moved to UFC 157 to bolster that event's card.[24]

Erick Silva was expected to face Jay Hieron at the Rocksville event; however, Silva pulled out of the bout citing an injury, and was replaced by promotional newcomer Tyron Woodley.[25]

A date between Robbie Peralta and Akira Corassani was briefly linked to this event;[26] however the bout was rescheduled for April 6, 2013 at UFC on Fuel TV 9 after Corassani was sidelined for a short period with an illness.[27]

At the weigh-ins, promotional newcomer Dustin Kimura came in heavy weighing in at 139 lb. Kimura was given two hours to cut to the bantamweight maximum of 136 pounds, but he elected instead to surrender a percentage of his fight purse to his opponent Chico Camus.[28]

UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on February 23, 2013 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.[36]

Background

The headline bout between Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche was the first-ever women's fight in UFC history.[37][38] The two fought in the newly created 135-pound bantamweight division.[37]

Manny Gamburyan was expected to face Chad Mendes at the event; however, Gamburyan was forced out of the bout with a thumb and elbow injury.[39] Mendes was then pulled from the card as a suitable replacement could not be found on short notice.[40] As a result, the bout between Court McGee and Josh Neer was promoted to the main card.[41]

At the weigh-ins, Nah-Shon Burrell came into his bout with Yuri Villefort heavy, weighing in at 175.8 lb. Villefort had already agreed in advance to a catchweight bout and received a portion of Burrell's purse.[42]

UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez (or UFC on Fox 7) was a mixed martial arts event held on April 20, 2013, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.[49] The event was broadcast live on FOX.

Background

The event was headlined by a Lightweight Championship bout between the current champion Benson Henderson and Strikeforce Lightweight Champion, promotional newcomer Gilbert Melendez.[50] Also featured on the card was a bout between two time Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir and Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier.[51]

Clay Guida was expected to face Chad Mendes at this event. However it was revealed on March 15 that Guida had pulled out of the bout citing an injury[52] and was replaced by Darren Elkins.[53]

Dan Hardy was expected to face Matt Brown at the event. However, Hardy was forced out of the bout due to medical issues regarding his heart and was replaced by Jordan Mein.[54]

Francisco Rivera was expected to face Hugo Viana at the event. However, Rivera was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by T.J. Dillashaw.[55]

A scheduled bout between Jon Tuck and Norman Parke was scrapped during the week leading up to the event, as Tuck was forced out of the bout with an injury.[56]

UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen was a mixed martial arts event held on April 27, 2013 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.[61][62]

Background

Jimy Hettes was expected to face Steven Siler at the event; however, Hettes was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by Kurt Holobaugh.[63]

Joe Proctor was expected to face Al Iaquinta at the event. However, the bout was scrapped as both fighters sustained training injuries leading up to the fight.[64]

Johnny Bedford was expected to face Erik Perez at the event. However, Perez pulled out of the bout just days before the event citing an injury and was replaced by Bryan Caraway.[65]

Welterweights Nick Catone and James Head were scheduled to face each other on this card. However, at the weigh ins Catone missed weight and the bout was subsequently pulled from the card the day of the show after Catone went to the hospital for dehydration. The bout was scrapped as a result.[66]
