The following tables are the list of cities in India by population. Often cities are bifurcated into multiple regions (municipalities) which results in creation of cities within cities which may figure in the list. The entire work of this article is based on Census of India, 2011, conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, under Ministry of Home Affairs (India), Government of India.

Definitions:[1]

  • Cities with more than 1 lakh population are known as Cities
  • Cities with more than 1 million population are known as Million Plus Cities
  • Cities with more than 4 million population are known as Mega Cities

There are 8 mega cities and 46 million plus cities in India.

The cities which are listed in bold are the capital of the respective state / union territory. The population includes only the cities and not urban agglomerations.
