Turanga Leela, known simply as Leela, is a character from the animated television series Futurama. Leela is captain of the Planet Express Ship and has an on-again, off-again relationship with Philip J. Fry. The character, voiced by Katey Sagal, is named for the Turangalîla-Symphonie by Olivier Messiaen.

Leela is the cyclops captain of the Planet Express Ship and head of its crew, which includes Fry and Bender. Leela was raised in an orphanarium, believing herself to have descended from a race of cyclopic aliens for much of her life. As a result Leela spends the early part of the series determined to discover her origins, as seen in "A Bicyclops Built for Two" when Leela meets another alleged member of her race, only to discover that he is a shapeshifting impostor. The episode "Leela's Homeworld" reveals Leela's parents, Turanga Morris and Munda, who are in fact mutants living in the sewers of New New York City. As mutants are forbidden from living on the surface, Leela continues to maintain she is an alien, until the episode "The Mutants Are Revolting" in which her secret is exposed to the public.

Welcome to the Video games WikiProject on the English Wikipedia! We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to video games.

Before working for Planet Express, Leela was a "Fate Assignment Officer" at Applied Cryogenics, where she was responsible for assigning careers to the people defrosted from the cryogenic tubes. In "Space Pilot 3000", Fry rejects the career Leela assigns him and escapes the facility. Leela pursues Fry, but ultimately quits her job and joins Fry. Together with Bender, the three seek employment with Fry's distant nephew Professor Farnsworth at Planet Express. Leela has occasionally left this job to pursue other interests, such as environmental and feminist activism.

Leela is portrayed as a character who receives unwanted romantic attention. She rejects Fry's advances for much of the series, although mellows towards him during the show's fourth season. In Into the Wild Green Yonder, Leela declares her love for Fry and the two begin an open romantic relationship which varies from episode to episode. In "The Prisoner of Benda" Leela and Fry are intimate to the point of having sex, albiest in the bodies of Professor Farnsworth and Doctor Zoidberg respectively, while in "Fry Am the Egg Man" Leela claims that she and Fry are merely platonic friends. Despite her strong-willed nature, she often feels self-conscious about her distinctive appearance, and at one point elects to have surgery to give her the appearance of having two normal-sized eyes, though she later has this reversed. Leela's single eye hampers her depth perception and is sometimes exploited for comic effect, for instance, in the episode The Problem with Popplers it is suggested that she actually is crashing into billboards every time in the opening credits, though it typically does not interfere with her ability to pilot the Planet Express ship (beyond crashing into the odd billboard) or her mastery of martial arts. Though early episodes describe Turanga Leela as a one-eyed alien, Futurama creator Matt Groening and executive producer David X. Cohen always intended her to descend from sewer-dwelling mutants before the series was pitched to executives. The mutants later revealed to be Leela's parents appear as background characters in the season 2 episode "I Second That Emotion", providing an early hint at her origin. Later in the series it is revealed that her parents had given her up to an orphanage (styled an 'orphanarium') in order to give her a chance at living a normal life on the surface, posing her as an alien due to her lack of distinguishing mutant features. According to Groening, the cyclopean but otherwise comely Leela subverts the science-fiction cliché of glamorously perfect female heroines.

Besides her over-sized eye, Leela's other notable features include her loopy ponytail and relatively large (for a cartoon female) nose. The ponytail was included so that Leela, like the other main characters in Futurama and Groening's cartoon The Simpsons, would be recognizable in silhouette. Groening decided to give Leela a large nose just for fun, but the animators initially resisted the idea, believing that it was unnatural. Animator Gregg Vanzo notes that the artists also had initial difficulties drawing facial expressions and moods for Leela because of her single eye. Leela's usual clothing consists of a low-cut white tank top, leggings and boots. Groening intended Leela to be portrayed as attractive and sexy, but had to instruct the animators de-emphasize exaggerated aspects of their original design that were too "racy". What Leela calls "this thing I wear on my wrist" (referred to in another episode as a "Wrist Lojackimator") is capable of minor plot conveniences as needed.

Katey Sagal provides the voice of Leela. Sagal immediately wanted the role when she was asked to audition for Groening. She is one of the few primarily live-action actors in the Futurama cast. In an interview, Sagal said: "This is acting, but a different type of acting. You're not using your whole tool here — your body and physicality — but it's challenging that way. The animation work is really unusual. I don't have the same experience doing it as the people I work with." Sagal notes that she found out years after accepting the part that someone else had previously been cast as Leela but the creators had decided to replace her. She also notes that she doesn't change Leela's voice much from her own natural voice but she does try to make it a little higher-pitched.

Welcome to the Video games WikiProject on the English Wikipedia! We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to video games.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them on our discussion page, or by contacting participants of the project.

Purpose and Goals

Our main functions are to:
 • provide guidelines and recommendations for all articles related to video games;
 • improve Wikipedia's coverage of video games by creating, expanding and maintaining such articles;
 • serve as the central point of discussion for issues related to video games on Wikipedia; and
 • maintain the Video games portal.
We are currently working toward four major milestones:
(2554/2074)
(4398/4149)
(10619/8298)
(31224/31116)
 • 3.5% List-Class
 • 21.3% Stub-Class
 • 49.7% Start-Class
 • 15% C-Class
 • 4.4% B-Class
 • 5.2% GA-Class
 • 0.9% FA-Class

Participation

We welcome everyone who wishes to improve video game articles. You don't need to formally join our project in order to contribute, but feel free to indicate your participation by adding our userbox or advert to your user page. Members are welcome to join our project chat on the unofficial Wikimedia Discord server, please see WP:Discord for more information.

New users who have contributed to video game related articles can be informed about this project by adding the vgproj welcome template to their talk pages.

Editing Practices

Make sure you are familiar with the following pages:

In addition to the usual policies and guidelines, please make sure you understand the specific guidelines for video game-related articles.

Project Structure

 • The assessment department evaluates the quality and importance of video game related articles.
 • The essential articles page identifies the most important topics in the scope of this WikiProject.
 • The reference library is an archive of high-quality sources that may be used to support development history, critical reception, and other sections of articles.
 • We have task forces within our project that provide centralized information and discussion for topics that have a sufficiently large scope, but would not benefit from having a separate WikiProject with all of the associated bureaucracy.
 • Page view statistics for the departments and task forces of this project are available.
