This is a list of accidents and disasters by death toll. It shows the number of fatalities associated with various explosions, structural fires, flood disasters, coal mine disasters, and other notable accidents. Purposeful disasters, such as terrorist attacks, are omitted; those events can be found at List of battles and other violent events by death toll.

Elevator accidents

200–400 (estimate) 1 11 September 2001 Two hijacked planes were flown into both towers of the World Trade Center, causing severe damage to the elevator system, which had 198 elevators in total. Some elevators fell when their cables were severed, while others were engulfed in flames or stuck until the buildings collapsed. An estimated 200 to 400 people died, most of whom were in express elevators or in elevators near the top floors. At least 21 people were trapped but managed to escape while 80 others survived because the doors happened to be open. At least one of those who survived was in a burning elevator, causing burns over 40% of his body.[53] New York City, New York, U.S.
