Beauty and the Beast, The Fate of the Furious and Despicable Me 3 have each grossed over $1 billion, and are ranked as the 10th, 11th, and 30th highest-grossing films of all time, respectively, with the latter the 6th highest-grossing animated film.
Wolf Warriors 2, a Chinese film, became the first non-Hollywood film to be listed on the worldwide top 100 box office.
2017 box office records
- In China, the film Wolf Warriors 2 became the fastest film to reach 2 and 3 billion yuan, as well as the first to reach 4 and 5 billion yuan.
- In China, the country recorded a new single day record as well as an all-time admission high on Saturday, January 28, with over ¥755 million ($110 million) registering an admission of over 21 million moviegoers, beating the previous record of ¥647 million ($98.4 million) and 17 million admissions set the previous year. Both records were set on the first day of the Chinese New Year.[3]
- In May, China had its first consecutive monthly gain in box office revenue in more than a year, led by Indian film Dangal, followed by Hollywood film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.[4]
- The Marvel Cinematic Universe became the first film franchise to gross more than $11 billion with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.[5] With the subsequent release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, it became the first film franchise to gross more than $12 billion.[6]
- The Despicable Me franchise became the highest-grossing animated franchise ever ($3.6 billion), surpassing the Shrek franchise.[7]
Film records
- Dangal became the highest-grossing Indian film and fourth highest-grossing non-English language film of all time,[8] crossing ₹2,000 crore (US$240 million) worldwide,[9] making it the first Indian film to gross $300 million worldwide.[10] Dangal is also the highest-grossing sports film of 2017, and Disney's fourth highest-grossing film of 2017.[11] Dangal is the first Indian film to exceed $100 million[12] and ₹1,000 crore overseas,[13] crossing ₹1,453 crore (US$170 million) in international markets,[9] including ¥1.28 billion (US$198 million) in China[14][15] and ₹41 crore (US$4.9 million) in Taiwan.[16] In China, Dangal became the 17th highest-grossing film of all time, the 9th highest-grossing foreign film,[17][18] the highest-grossing non-Hollywood foreign film (surpassing Japanese anime film Your Name),[19] the leggiest box office release (cumulative gross 83 times its opening day haul,[18][20] surpassing Zootopia),[8] had the most consecutive days with a ¥10 million (US$2 million) gross (surpassing the 30 days of Transformers: Age of Extinction)[21] and $1 million gross[18] (38 days),[22] was the highest-grossing film in May 2017 (ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales[4] and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2),[12] and is the year's third highest-grossing foreign film (after The Fate of the Furious and Transformers: The Last Knight).[23] Aamir Khan's earnings from Dangal is estimated to be ₹300 crore (US$36 million),[24] the highest payday for a non-Hollywood actor.[25]
- Baahubali 2: The Conclusion became the highest-grossing film in India and also the first film to gross more than ₹1,000 crore (US$120 million) there. It has grossed a total of ₹1,374 crore (US$160 million) there and became the first and only film to do so.[26] It is also the first Indian film to debut in the top 5 in the US, the first Indian film to open with over $10 million there (and the third foreign film overall), the first Indian film to cross $20 million there, and the highest grossing Indian film in the market.
- Resident Evil: The Final Chapter scored the biggest three day (Friday to Sunday) opening in China with an estimated ¥636.9 million ($92.7 million) debut, according to official local sources. This toppled the previous record holders Transformers: Age of Extinction (¥632 million) and Captain America: Civil War (¥628 million).[27]
- Beauty and the Beast broke Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's records ($166 million) for the weekend debut in March ($174.8 million) and for a spring release and Pitch Perfect 2's record ($69.2 million) for the highest weekend debut for a musical film.
- The Fate of the Furious broke Jurassic World's record ($316.6 million) of largest foreign weekend debut ($432.3 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens's record ($529 million) of largest worldwide weekend debut ($532 million).[28]
- Wonder Woman grossed $103.3 million in its opening weekend, breaking the record for a female-directed film previously held by Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey ($85.2 million on 13-15 February 2015); the film also became the highest-grossing World War I film, surpassing War Horse ($79.9 million on 25-28 December 2011). In North America, it also crossed $404 million, making it the highest grossing superhero origin story film ever domestically, beating out Spider-Man ($403.7 million in 2002).
