List of MPs elected in the 2010 United Kingdom general election
The fifty-fifth Parliament of the United Kingdom was the legislature of the United Kingdom following the 2010 general election of Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons. Parliament, which consists of the House of Lords and the elected House of Commons, was convened on 25 May 2010 at the Palace of Westminster by Queen Elizabeth II. It was dissolved at the beginning of 30 March 2015, being 25 working days ahead of the 2015 general election on 7 May 2015.
The election saw each of Parliament's 650 constituencies return one MP to the House of Commons. The Conservative Party, led by David Cameron, became the single largest party, though without an overall majority. This resulted in a hung parliament. A coalition agreement was then formed following negotiations with the Liberal Democrats and their leader Nick Clegg. John Bercow resumed his role as Speaker of the House of Commons. In September 2010, Ed Miliband won a Labour Party leadership vote to succeed Gordon Brown as permanent Leader of the Opposition.
In the House of Lords, Baroness Hayman (ex-Labour) resumed her role as Lord Speaker until the end of her five-year term in 2011, after which she did not seek re-election in the house. Peers elected former Crossbencher Baroness D'Souza to replace her. From the start of this Parliament the Lords were "led" by Lord Strathclyde without an absolute majority on his Conservative benches. In January 2013 he stood down and was succeeded by Lord Hill of Oareford.
Notable newcomers in this general election included Liz Kendall, Guto Bebb, Gloria De Piero, Sajid Javid, Michael Dugher, Amber Rudd, Lisa Nandy, Anna Soubry, Heidi Alexander, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Alison McGovern, Jason McCartney, John Woodcock, Andrew Percy, Owen Smith, Nicky Morgan, Tristram Hunt, Daniel Poulter, Owen Smith, Luciana Berger, Karen Bradley, Tracey Crouch, and also Caroline Lucas.
House of Commons composition
This is a graphical representation of the House of Commons showing a comparison of party strengths as it was directly after the 2010 General Election:

Notes:
- The Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru sat together as a party group.
- Sinn Féin did not take its seats.
- This is not the official seating plan of the House of Commons, which has five rows of benches on each side, with the government party to the right of the Speaker and opposition parties to the left, but with room for only around two-thirds of MPs to sit at any one time.
This table shows the number of MPs in each party:

List of MPs elected in the general election
The following table is a list of MPs elected, ordered by constituency. As the constituency boundaries changed for this election, the "notional incumbent" column lists the party estimated to have won the seat at the 2005 election, had that election been conducted under the new boundaries.
Names of incumbents are listed where they stood for re-election; for details of defeated new candidates and the incumbent who stood down in those cases see individual constituency articles.

Changes and by-elections
After the general election, changes can occur in the composition of the House of Commons. This happens as a result of the election of Deputy Speakers, by-elections, defections, suspensions or removal of whip.
Technically, MPs cannot resign. However, they can effectively do so by requesting to be appointed as the Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead or the Crown Steward and Bailiff of the three Chiltern Hundreds of Stoke, Desborough and Burnham, which vacates their seat.
The net outcome of all changes at the dissolution of Parliament resulted in four fewer Conservative MPs, two fewer Labour MPs, one fewer Liberal Democrat MP, four more independent MPs, the addition of one Respect MP and the addition of two UKIP MPs. This resulted in a reduction of the actual government majority from eighty-three to seventy-three. Both Respect and UKIP were previously unrepresented in the fifty-fifth Parliament. This was the first time that candidates standing for UKIP had been elected to the House of Commons.
Deputy Speakers
Although Deputy Speakers do not resign from their parties, they cease to vote (except to break ties) and they do not participate in party-political activity until the next election.
- Lindsay Hoyle (Lab, Chorley) was elected Chairman of Ways and Means.
- Nigel Evans (Con, Ribble Valley) was elected First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means and held the position until his resignation on 10 September 2013.[4]
- Dawn Primarolo (Lab, Bristol South) was elected Second Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means.
- Eleanor Laing (Con, Epping Forest) was elected First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means on 16 October 2013.[5]
By-elections
By-elections are held for seats that become vacant. If a vacancy is created within a certain period of time before the next general election, then a by-election may not be held, with that seat being left vacant for the remainder of the Parliament.[6]
- Phil Woolas (Lab, Oldham East and Saddleworth) had his result in the general election declared null and void on 5 November 2010, after he was found guilty of knowingly making false statements in campaign literature.[7][8] On 13 January 2011, Debbie Abrahams (Lab) won the by-election.
- Eric Illsley (Ind, Barnsley Central), having been suspended from the Labour Party, resigned on 8 February 2011, shortly before receiving a prison sentence for his part in the United Kingdom parliamentary expenses scandal. On 3 March 2011, Dan Jarvis (Lab) won the by-election.[9]
- Sir Peter Soulsby (Lab, Leicester South) resigned on 5 March 2011 in order to contest the mayoralty of Leicester. On 5 May 2011, Jon Ashworth (Lab) won the by-election.

- Tony Lloyd (Lab, Manchester Central) resigned on 22 October 2012 in order to contest the Police and Crime Commissioner elections. On 15 November 2012, Lucy Powell (Lab) won the by-election.[10]
- Alun Michael (Lab, Cardiff South and Penarth) resigned on 22 October 2012 in order to contest the Police and Crime Commissioner elections. On 15 November 2012, Stephen Doughty (Lab) won the by-election.[10]
- Malcolm Wicks (Lab, Croydon North) died of cancer on 29 September 2012. On 29 November 2012, Steve Reed (Lab) won the by-election.
- Sir Stuart Bell (Lab, Middlesbrough) died of cancer on 13 October 2012.[11] On 29 November 2012, Andy McDonald (Lab) won the by-election.
- Denis MacShane (Lab, Rotherham), having previously been suspended and then reinstated to the Labour Party, resigned on 2 November 2012 following a parliamentary inquiry into his falsification of expenses claims.[12] On 29 November 2012, Sarah Champion (Lab) won the by-election.
- Chris Huhne (LD, Eastleigh) resigned on 4 February 2013, shortly before receiving a prison sentence for perverting the course of justice. On 28 February 2013, Mike Thornton (LD) won the by-election.
- Martin McGuinness (SF, Mid Ulster) resigned on 2 January 2013 in order to end 'double jobbing' as an MP as well as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly, as per a Sinn Féin commitment. On 7 March 2013, Francie Molloy (SF) won the by-election.
- David Miliband (Lab, South Shields) resigned on 15 April 2013 in order to take up the role of head of the International Rescue Committee, based in New York City. On 2 May 2013, Emma Lewell-Buck (Lab) won the by-election.
- Paul Goggins (Lab, Wythenshawe and Sale East) died as a result of a brain haemorrhage on 7 January 2014. On 13 February 2014, Mike Kane (Lab) won the by-election.
- Patrick Mercer (Ind, Newark), who had already resigned from the Conservative Party, resigned from the House of Commons on 29 April 2014, having allegedly asked questions in Parliament in return for money. On 5 June 2014, Robert Jenrick (Con) won the by-election.
- Douglas Carswell (Con, Clacton) resigned to recontest his seat as a UKIP candidate on 28 August 2014. On 9 October 2014, Carswell (UKIP) won the by-election.
- Jim Dobbin (Lab, Heywood and Middleton) died of acute alcohol toxicity on 6 September 2014. On 9 October 2014, Liz McInnes (Lab) won the by-election.
- Mark Reckless (Con, Rochester and Strood) resigned to recontest his seat as a UKIP candidate on 27 September 2014. On 20 November 2014, Reckless (UKIP) won the by-election.
Defections, suspensions and removal of whip
In some situations, the label which MPs sit in the House of Commons under can change. When this happens, MPs often become independents.
- Eric Illsley (Lab, Barnsley Central) had the Labour whip withdrawn on 19 May 2010 after he was charged with false accounting as part of the United Kingdom parliamentary expenses scandal.[2] He sat as an independent until he resigned on 8 February 2011.
- Denis MacShane (Lab, Rotherham) was suspended from the Labour Party and had the whip withdrawn on 14 October 2010 after the Metropolitan Police Service began an investigation into his conduct following a referral from the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.[13] He then sat as an independent until he was reinstated as a Labour MP on 4 July 2012,[14] before eventually resigning on 2 November 2012.
- Eric Joyce (Lab, Falkirk) was suspended from the Labour Party on 23 February 2012 following his arrest on suspicion of assault the night before.[15] He later resigned from the Labour Party, and sat as an independent for the remainder of the Parliament.
- Nadine Dorries (Con, Mid Bedfordshire) was suspended from the Conservative Party on 6 November 2012 due to her unauthorised participation in the television programme I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here![16] She sat as an independent until she was reinstated as a Conservative MP on 8 May 2013.[17]
- Patrick Mercer (Con, Newark) resigned from the Conservative Party on 31 May 2013 in order to "save [his] party embarrassment" after he was the subject of a journalistic sting exploring his conduct regarding lobbying companies.[18] He sat as an independent until he resigned on 29 April 2014, immediately after learning that he faced a six-month suspension from the House of Commons as sanction for his actions.[19]
- Mike Hancock (LD, Portsmouth South) resigned the Liberal Democrat whip on 3 June 2013 with the initial intention of this being a temporary measure to last until the end of a forthcoming court case which involved allegations that he committed sexual offences. He stated that this was in order to act "in the best interests of the party nationally and in Portsmouth and for [his] family."[20] Although a police investigation found that he should face no further action in relation to the allegations, the evidence against him was described as "credible" in a report. The leaking of this report led to him being formally suspended from the Liberal Democrats on 22 January 2014[21] before he resigned from the party completely on 17 September 2014.[22] He sat as an independent for the remainder of the Parliament.
- David Ward (LD, Bradford East) was suspended from the Liberal Democrats on 17 July 2013 for a set period lasting until 13 September 2013 after he questioned the continuing existence of the State of Israel and later refused to apologise for these remarks.[23][24] He sat as an independent until he was reinstated as a Liberal Democrat MP.[25]
- Nigel Evans (Con, Ribble Valley) resigned as First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means on 10 September 2013 after being charged with offences including sexual assault and rape.
